Workman Returns To NBA As Official
Nov 04, 2008 7:14 AM EST
Haywoode Workman has made the rare transition from NBA player to league official and is wondering how fans with receive him at Conseco Fieldhouse when he eventually referees a game there.
Workman was a major contributor during four seasons with the Pacers in the mid-1990s.
"I've been thinking about that game," Workman said. "I could imagine there'd be an ovation when they call my name. But when I make that first call against Indiana, they could be throwing trash at me."
He is just the third former player to make the jump.
"I can't apologize for who I am and what I accomplished before I became an official, but when I get out there, I still have to make the right call," Workman said. "I've shown I can do that, but now I've got to prove myself again to the guys that have been coaching 15 or 20 years or the players that have been in the NBA for a long stint. I have to prove them I belong at this level as an official. That's not a problem. I've done that my whole career."
