James Gist: "Spurs sent me to Europe for a year"
Brak Huerta, SpursReport
Tuesday, November 04, 2008

This past summer, with the 57th overall selection, the Spurs picked James Gist, a 6-9 forward for Maryland.

In his senior year, 21-year-old Gist was named to the All-ACC Second Team and ACC All-Defensive Team after averaging 15.9 points and 7.9 rebounds.

Gist looked fantastic during Summer League play for the team often leading the team in scoring, but instead of heading to training camp, he surprised many fans by signing with a pro basketball club based in Biella, Italy.

There had been rumor that the team signed Gist, but for over a week, the Spurs denied or otherwise quieted those rumors and no official reports were substantiated until later- not long after Gist had been introduced to the media in San Antonio.

As it turned out, Gist headed to Europe under the advice of Gregg Popovich.

Gist has finally checked in after quietly disappeaing to Italy.

"I graduated from college, got drafted in the NBA by the San Antonio Spurs, and now I am Biella Italy, a beautiful city about an hour drive from Milan," writes Gist on his blog.

"I will consider myself blessed through this process; it's been a roller coaster but a fun experience. Waiting to get my name called on draft day was a nerve racking experience but nothing compares to walking up to the podium to receive my college degree from the University of Maryland. Playing in the NBA has always been my dream, I was very disappointed when the Spurs decided to send me overseas to play for a year, but I trusted their judgment and after speaking to coach Popovich I felt more comfortable, how can I dispute the judgment of a hall of famer like him."

Can we expect to see Gist in a Spurs uniform next season? It's much too early to tell but his skills have been improving and "I feel like I am already off the charts compared to when I was in Maryland."

"The players here are more experienced and more precise, in college you can get away with a mistake on defense, but here you pay for that mistake immediately, players do not miss when they are open!"

For now, he's simply learning to enjoy his experience in Italy.

"Being away from my family and friends has been the most challenging situation I have to deal with over here," writes Gist. "The culture, food and people are so breathtaking! I have been on the road so I have had the opportunity to see a lot of places in Italy and it's really beautiful, my team mates are the best, I had to get used to driving the small cars and the narrow roads but everything else is pretty much nice."

I'm trying to comment, but theyreally make you jump threw hoops to do so. This is what I want to leave on his blog.

Hey, just so you know a good majority of the Spurs fans really wish Pop hadn't sent you off. I'll be civil, but let's just say you would be a huge help and even bigger improvement over some of the Spurs bigs getting minutes right now. You probably know the Spurs are 0-3, but I think they'd be 2-1 or even unbeaten with you in the rotation. We're all counting the days til you're back!!!

Send that Manufan909. I'd like to say that if he came to training camp and a spot was up for grabs between himself and Tolliver I think he would have destroyed Tolliver.

You can't overcome the power of the mancrush!!! I'll do it tomo when I have time, they have a bunch of little requirements, and I need to find a good pic of myself. Damn, it'd be awesome if he actually responded to me!!! Bet he'll know I mean Bonner.:king

i just hope, when the time comes, he doesn't pull a Splitter on the Spurs.

I think he and Pop have a "gentleman's agreement". Plus it was different with Tiago, he could decide just to stay home, Gist probably has a countdown device in his room to when the 09-10 traing camp begins.

If anyone knows the technical details, is it possible for Gist to fuck the Spurs exactly like Splitter did, for the sake of m33po's arguement.

My comment for Gist...

Hey James...I am a Spurs fan from Texas. I watched you all through the summer league and I was also disappointed that the Spurs sent you overseas. I and many other fans are very excited about you coming to play for us. We have been waiting for a player with your abilities for a long time, and its encouraging to hear that you feel that you are getting even better. Take care of yourself while you are there...can't wait to see you in silver and black. Ben

Yep, definitely a bad move considering the state of our defense, rebounding and Bowen's drop in production.

Bonner?

Eurolegue?

Bonner is worth 200 K/year maximum on a mediocre team in a national championship team.

He'd be sitting at the end of the bech on a top 16 Euroleague team.

If this is not a joke..than Pop should be damned. I know he is a very intelligent guy,but this move suggest that Spurs got too many young star prospects and Gist should stay in Europe coz he wont got any minute in SA. Fucking dumb.
Did he learn anything from Splitter case?? If Gist doing good in Italy, there is a strong possibility they will pay Gist top money and since he is young then he got time on his side..If I were him I will choose money so when I came to NBA I already got some in my banking account. The key is asking for at least 3 times what Spurs will give, if Tau give Splitter 8 times salary than asking for 3 times will make sense. He lives near Milan which got beautiful scenery, Italian girls are nice and sexy, cost of living is cheaper than US, less play so less injury, and more salary than what Spurs offer... I still consider this as a positive hopeful image projection of Spurs fans, because if its real than Pop is getting dumber and overestimate his current roster by keeping Finley and send him to Italy

Sweet Jesus, someone take at least 2 out of JV/Bonner/KT/Finley. I could see someone wanting a shooting big, but other than that I don't see anay of them leaving in a trade, unless someone has an even bigger lack of big men than the Spurs. McDyess would be looking damn good about now. Just waive KT!!!

The only reason this makes any sense is because Pop is waiting for the contracts of the likes of Bonner and Oberto to expire and then bring him in next season. Otherwise this makes no sense as he is exactly what we need up front and showed the most promise in SL.

The foreign leagues are no longer just training grounds for developing immature players for the NBA. They can develop players and offer them very competitive contracts to stay.

Gist isn't in the same contract position as Spliter because he wasn't a first round pick with a guaranteed (but limited at a cap) contract. He will be able to put his services up for bid I believe if he chooses to do so at the end of his current contract.

Splitter is a top player of a Euroleague Final 4 team.
Gist is Mr. Nobody.
Pop did the right thing, as Gist is very raw and they actually teach basketball fundamentals in Italy.
Whether he goes back to SA, hard to say, but it is highly unlikely that in one single season in a minor team with no Euroleague exposure, he will be offered more than what the Spurs will be willing to pay.

As for the sceneries and girls, well, money can't buy that.

All is good, I thank it was good for him to have played a season in europe. I know that the spurs need him, I rememberd during the draft how nervous i was thinking he would not get picked. i though he was going to be 43 and went 57th my stomach was in knots!! And by that time i didn't care what team he went to as long as he got picked, because he worked so hard to get there. And I'm proud of him, very proud in deed. plus i like the spurs :flag: James go and do you!! It's like butter baby!!!

he'd have to take up a roster spot to still be under the Spurs control and play in the D-League (i.e. Ian).

as is, he's still Spurs property (at least as far as the NBA is concerned), but off the roster.

Nice Avatar......sure wish we could have kept Alvin and still gotten TC

C - DRob
PF - TC
SF - Elliott
SG - Anderson
PG - ARob (to hell with Strickland)

Man this would have been one sweet ass lineup....of course, I am not exactly sure how good a bench we would have had...

Now onto Gist....Those were some nice numbers for a first year kid, especially one who is having to adapt from a college setting to a real world setting, and in a whole new continent no less. I think he will make a fine addition to the club next season. Gist, Hill, and Hairston give a nice ray of sunshine for the future of the Spurs. I hope Ian can get and stay healthy and join these 3....then they can be the Fantastic 4 or the 4 Horsemen.

As for Gist, I think it's absurd that there are so many people actually questioning the all mighty front office of SA in here.

I suppose he just doesn't understand the impact of socialism. It costs me €0,50 to drive one exit on the highway (63 cents). ONE exit.

He is the 3rd leading scorer, 2nd best rebounder and top 3 point shooter on Angelico. Trent Plaisted isn't doing as well as some thought.

Gist seems to be progressing quite nicely. Great that he was able to go there and get the reps neccessary to improve his game. Come next year we get to see if it was all worth the wait.

James Gist does not get sent to Europe. He only flies there on his own time.

Probably be signed to a 2-year contract next season, so he won't be a part of the 2010 free agency sweepstakes.

Gist signed a one-year deal with Angelico, so he should be given a look by the Spurs if they are happy with his progress.

euro three point lines are shorter. he showed he can knock down some threes in summer league though. that dunk from youtube was a drive from the three point line. i now see who lebron learned his moves from.

I just want to say for all people that keep talk so much about line is closer in Europe.

1. next year it is going back about 20 inches further at top of key.

2. NBA 3 point line is only 1 inch further from goal at corners. It is longer in distance from top of key but in corners is just 1 inch difference and that is THIS time before the line has even been moved back.

Next year it will be exact same distance at corners as NBA.

So there is much exaggeration about this difference.

It's nice to see Gist shooting well the 3 even if the 3 point line is significantly closer in Europe than in NBA.

A bright spot in those stats is that he has at least one steal in every game (except one). And many games he has several. Active hands.

Someone shoud try very hard to convince me that a guy that is somewhat contributing to a loosing effort in a mediocre team in a regional league,
will be an overnight substantial contributor on an NBA contender team.

Simply unrealistic.

It's still early but last years draft may still turn out to be a solid performance by the front office.

George Hill: I recall draft night being on this board with a lot of you and being ticked that the Spurs had taken this guy I had never heard of. I was wrong. It's amazing the front office may actually know a bit more about basketball and talent than me.

Mailk Hairston: There was debate about whether Phoenix had gotten one over on us that night but things are looking pretty good. Hairston did great with the Toros and is not embarassing himself when he gets into games. Should he evolve into a rotation player (and he is off to a good start) you have to be happy picking up such a guy in the middle of the second round.

James Gist: He tore up summer league and became a folk hero on this board giving the James White disciples a new player to hold out hope for. The jury is still out as with his size it will be interesting to see just where he fits in the NBA.

R.C. and Pop actually didn't do a bad job even with Presti going to Seattle. Heck even Marcus Williams is no longer a total embarassment.

This last draft could be remembered as one of the best ever by the front office if the three players become contributors...

I like the three of them A LOT

Don't forget to credit George Felton, as well. The Spurs have upped their level of college scouting since 2006.

Wikipedia:
¨On April 5, 2015, Gist again tested positive for marijuana use, for the second time in his career, after the Greek Cup (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_Basketball_Cup) final against Apollon Patras (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollon_Patras_B.C.).[23] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Gist#cite_note-23) Eventually, on May 12, Gist was suspended for 8 months from participating in sports events¨
