Kansas State coach Ron Prince is expected to announce his resignation Wednesday afternoon, two sources told the Wichita Eagle. Prince is expected to address his team at 3:45 p.m. ET.

He is 16-18 in two-plus seasons with the Wildcats. Prince replaced coaching legend Bill Snyder and immediately took the team to a bowl game in 2006.

Prince is expected to remain head coach through this season. If he steps down, he would be the fifth I-A coach to resign or be fired in the middle of the 2008 season.

Texas Christian University coach Gary Patterson has been hired as Kansas State's 34th football coach, multiple sources have confirmed to GoPowercat.com. Patterson replaces Ron Prince who was fired Wednesday.

GoPowercat.com has confirmed that K-State has offered Patterson a five-year contract in the range of $2 million per season. Talks between K-State athletics director Bob Krause and Patterson's representatives began in the past two weeks. Initial discussions centered on the K-State graduate's interest in the job and demands to be lured to K-State.

Those issues were apparently the coach's ability to have complete control over the hiring of his coaching and support staffs, and when he would leave TCU to take over at K-State. A sticking point of coaching his team through a bowl may have been lifted with Thursday's 13-10 loss to Utah, however. That defeat certainly dropped the Frogs out of contention for a BCS bid, and possibly as low as playing in the Armed Services Bowl on TCU's home field in Ft. Worth, Texas, on New Year's Eve.

Patterson's Horned Frogs entered Thursday's game at Utah ranked 12th in the country, but fell to 9-2 with the loss. After a bye in the schedule next week, TCU will wrap up its regular season with a home game with Air Force on Nov. 22.

Known as one of college football's great defensive coaches, Patterson's TCU teams have made dominant defenses a hallmark of his program the past nine seasons.

Heading into the Utah game, TCU ranked this season second nationally in total defense at 214.5 yards per game, only behind USC. The Frogs' defense also ranked first nationally in rush defense (38.9 yards per game), ranked 22nd in pass defense (175.6 ypg), first nationally in sacks (3.8 pg) and third nationally in turnover margin (plus-1.5 pg).

Patterson is a K-State graduate who began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach on Jim Dickey's 1982 KSU staff at K-State. Since that first year, Patterson has had 10 stops along the way as an assistant coach before taking over the head coach duties at TCU in 2000.

Beginning with the 1996 season, Patterson was reunited with former Pittsburg State coach Dennis Franchione at New Mexico for two seasons as the defensive coordinator then moved to TCU when Franchione took over the Horned Frogs beginning with the 1998 campaign.

Patterson is 71-27 as TCU's head coach. His teams have four 10-win seasons in the past six years and he was the fastest coach in school history to reach 50 wins.
