8.3 ppg for the Lakers? $58 million for 4 years for that? Bust.

17 rebounds, 4 blocks yesterday.

He makes Chris Kaman curl up when they meet.

With Bynum, the Lakers are now the best Defensive team AND Offensive Team in the league.

I'll take it!

As much as I hate the lakers I will give them their well due respect.... bynum is a role player and is doing a good job he doesnt need to score alot of points when you have kobe on your side, his role is to stay down low and fill the gap keep easy baskets from happening, grab boards, block shots. he is the inside presense the lakers needed badly last year against the celtics.. he doesnt need to have big numbers to make a big effect on the game. sounds like you may be a little bitter about the spurs start.... end of a era??????

I believe this thread is about Andrew Bynum only scoring 8 points a game. The Spurs are irrelevant here.

ok the fact of the matter is the lakers have blown away every team they faced with bynum only averaging 8.3ppg.. this thread is a little pre mature why dont you make it again if he continues to average those amounts if/when the lakers start losing.. he could average 1ppg as long as the lakers continue to win i dont see a problem with that.. its there money let em spend it how they want

So what?

not scoring 50 points per game doesn't make you a good player. It makes you a ball hog.

I'm not Lakers fan or a Bynum fan at all but c'mon to say he is a bust because he's averaging 8 points a game is kind of dumb. Just look at what he's able to do down the post.

Oh and he's only 21 years old too. Pretty impressive indeed.

Fact is, there aren't much shots to go around.. He's just not going to touch the ball much.

SO what the fuck do you want him to do when he's not getting the ball?? Bitch and cry??

He need to suck it up, play D and rebound; which he has been doing. That's exactly what he's being paid to do.

At the price for the length they're paying him, its more than decent - 17 boards is great no matter how you cut it, and to go along with 4 blocks, his defensive presence was definitely felt.

However, to call the Lakers the league's best defensive team is simple fallacy. One good bigman in the middle and kobe outside cant make up for the other extremely weak links in the chain (I'd say Finley's matador defense is more effective than Odom, Radmanovic, even Sasha since hes mentally weak at the end of games)

You are correct...

The Lakers are second in the league in opponent field goal percentage, and second in the league for fewest points per game.

Well take it... it's only going to get better.

these stats are misleading , they played mostly non playoffs teams.

Regarding Drews points. The Lakers have had 5-8 guys in double figures in prety much all of the games so far, One of those guys is Kobe. Drew is playing less than 30 mins a night

Watching the games gives you a better idea than just looking at the box score.

they're the best offensive team, but not even close to the best defensive team.

top 10 probably though.

So true!

Just stirring the pot of absurdity, How anyone can say someone is a bust or a team is this or that after 4 games is idiotic.

Drew is only going to get better. Is he going to grab 17 rebounds and 4 blocks a night?... hell no. Is he a key piece to the D that we didnt have last year? ... time will tell. My money says he will be. One factor that is not even included on stats is altered shots. Drew makes a huge difference there.

Time will tell...

Such a young man being the difference is not going to be good come playoff time.

Such a young man being the difference is not going to be good come playoff time.

This is unfortunately true. It's a risky proposition, but with all young protege's, you'll accept that risk.

I feel this is why Phil's hammering defense into Bynum right now. He's not giving Bynum shots so that he concentrates only on defense. Bynum should be a defensive specialist come Playoffs if this keeps up.

Phil will throw Bynum a play once in awhile to reward good work on the defensive end but Phil's trying to make him the best defensively.

The Lakers are the best defensive team in the league right now. Fact.

Thats mainly due to Andrew Bynum. By the way, Bynum is holding opposing centers to a PER OF 4 the first 4 games of the season. And the Lakers have won two games where they shot below 40%. Thats called defense.

Fact is, Bynum is a DPOY candidate this season and he just turned 21. Put him on a terrible team andhe would be scoring close to 20 points a game. But on the Lakers, what he does offensively doesn't really matter. Scoring is the least of the Lakers worries.

Bynum's defensive impact alone is worth the contract he got. And he's only going to get better.

You make some valid points, and on the topic of this thread about how hes a bust i agree with you.

But calling yourself the best defensive team in the league after 4 games is a stretch.

The rockets had some of the worst defense the 1st half of the season and skyrocketed to #2 the 2nd half of the season.

IMHO i think the Celtics are still the best defensive team in the league

no doubting that. just the sheer intimidation factor of perkins and KG with rondo running wild getting steals is a huge plus. but numbers wise the lakers have been playing the best D in this early season. hopefully it continues because thats what they said they were focusing on this season

DPOY of year numbers and impact is not a bust. The irony of you post is that you're claiming he's bust, yet call me out on saying the Lakers are best defensive team in the league after 4 games, despite the numbers backing up that claim.

Thats I fine, but I and the statistics disagree. Celtics lost their best perimeter defender in Posey. The Lakers were 5th in defensive rating LAST season according to basketballreference and that was WITHOUT Bynum and Ariza. Now that Bynum is healthy, anchoring the pain as good any center in the league while Ariza is playing stellar perimeter D and getting nearly 3 steals per 36 minutes you now have the recipe for the best defense league.

erghh my bad that was a typo , i meant to say how i agreed with you that he wasn't* a bust.

And im surprised you still think the lakers are the best defensive team in the league. Thats just not the case when you have pretty much the same core with the exception of bynum.

You lack a great perimeter defender, when teams get hot from 3 pt land, they will eat the lakers up.

The Lakers aren't even close to the celtics in terms of defense ( i believe their defense is worse this year though). Their interior defense was so solid you would think that it was a 1 on 1 matchup as they would move together so well, RARELY blowing of a defensive assignment. Basically, even if one of their team's pulled off a Sasha Vujacic like that one celtic comeback game, the chances of the opposing player making the shot would still be slim.

do i agree that the lakers are the best defensive team in the league? no. i think its still boston. but why do you play defense? to limit the other teams scoring right? so the team that gives up the fewest amount of points is arguably the best defensive team in the league correct? of thats the case, so far this year the lakers ARE the best defensive team in the league. 85 points per game.

YOU CAN'T BASE THAT OFF OF 4 GAMES LOL.

Have you ever taken a stats class? The larger the sample size the closer it gets to the actual mean.

Last season I can fersure tell you that the rockets who had the close to the worst defense in the league the first 3 months (sub.500) weren't even close to that at the end, they were #2.

You can't base the success you are going to have in an 82 game season off of your first 4 games, which becomes even more evident because of the schedule the NBA presents.

That being said, the Lakers look great Defensively, and even better than the rockets without Battier. Battier was probably one of the few who has the ability to somewhat contain Kobe, so i will give you guys the W on sunday :bking

To Call the Lakers #1 defense @ this point is madd premature.

But they can definitely be up there - if they continue to do what they're doing

Lol @ Bynum being a bust 4 games in the season, esp. when these numbers are pretty good for the average center in our current NBA.

If he's a bust now, I guess you Spur fans might as well start thinking towards the lottery.

Anyways BIG GAME Tomorrow!
