How can a fictional character have anything to do with anything?

hmm i may have to go church now just after reading this thread.

I look at Obama as the U.S. president not just a specific's race president.

He's the middle class President. Since he never mentions the lower class, I don't think he is their president.

Well, we may have underestimated what a fictional character can do. Santa has a holiday and gets people to go broke every damn year. God has people devoting their whole lives for a pie in the sky that dont exsist. The Devil??? Im sure we come up with plenty more fictional characters that have gotten people to much more.

Wait a second..........The anti-gay guy doesn't believe in religion?????????????

WTF do you care about gay marriage then?

You show me a society with no moral standards, and I'll show you a society destined for self destruction. I hope you know and understand that the religious people did not invent morals, nor marriage for that matter.

How about I show you a society that doesn't allow for free will instead.

By the way, if religion didn't invent morals, what did?

I don't think religion invented morals -mores tended to be enshrined in various religious texts along with random and often crazy biases which hypocritically undid the merit of the prior, but were not created by them.

The only way you could assume that mores were invented by religions is to believe that God in fact did inspire or talk to the people who wrote their various religious texts. If you don't, it MUST be that the religions absorbed cultural mores and possibly tweaked them for individuality.

Nah, instinct would logically only be about self-preservation and reproduction. Instinct is primal, and would appeal to the nature of animals. I completely disagree that there is some sort of semi-complex internal moral standard built-in to people.

Societal mores for the purpose of public or greater good need not be predicated upon the existence of a supernatural judge even in the absence of instinctual moral tenets.
