More S.A. radio changes: Thompson Brothers gone
Starting today, listeners will notice more changes in the lineup of San Antonio's ESPN radio station.
The cuts, which I wrote about when Dawn Murphy was axed last week, just keep on comin'.
This week it's the Thompson Brothers' afternoon show (on KZDC "The Zone" at 1250 AM) that's been pulled — yank, just like that.
In its place, will be an expanded version of the Chris Duel and Jason Minnix show, which previously started at 5 p.m.
Beginning at 3 p.m. today, you'll hear Duel and Minnix in that slot. Their show also will end an hour earlier at 7 p.m. instead of 8 p.m.
Jay Howard will continue to do his Spurs gig with Duel and Minnix an hour before closing on every Spurs game day.
Mark Landis, the programming pooh-bah of the BMP radio group, chalked up the Thompsons yank to budgetary cuts caused by today's painful economy. He said he continues to have deep respect for the talent and professionalism of Jason and Rob Thompson and that the cut "wasn't personal."
Because of weak signal issues after dark, he also wanted to move the Duel-Minnix show to an earlier timeslot to give it as much daylight exposure as possible.

Bummer, I enjoyed listening to them on my drive home from work. The Duel show sucks. I gave it a try, but I couldn't get into it.
Now, that dude over on 760 has been growing on me. Probably because I enjoy listening to him bitch about how bad the Cowboys have been.

shame. Thompsons are very engaging and they get the SA sports mindset. they can also break down x's and o's better than anyone on Duel/Minnix.
I'm thinking the Thompsons on morning drive would have rocked. Let 'em go head to head with Burns/Everett.
I hate to say it, but things don't look good for this station based on recent moves.

Uhmmm....I don't like that idea at all.
Kori....please edit Purist's comment as soon as possible. No sense in posting such nonsense.

KTSA has cut the wrong show?????? They should have kept the Thompson Brothers and cut the show that followed them?????????????I'm sure it came down to the amount of money that the two shows were being paid. The Thompsons will get another gig ASAP. They are good and have a good knowledge of all sports. Good Luck and I wonder when will the Jakle lady will tell us somemore bad news about KTSA? It seems like KTSA does not like to share the information with its radio listeners and neither do the host of their shows. This is just my opinion and we all have one

You used to get on my nerves, sonny, but I'm starting to find your illiterate ass amusing. Keep it up!
BMP's biggest mistake was firing the greatness that is the lovely and talented Dawn Murphy.
Any moves they have made or will make after that boneheaded decision is just rearranging the deck chairs on the pic Gatos posted above.

....meanwhile the ticket has been such a success OAI won't put the Spurs broadcast on a sports radio channel...

Well that sux. Doesn't mean I'll run to the Ticket 760 anytime soon. With everybody wanting to gripe about the Cowboys and Spurs now, it leaves little room for college football talk (although I love Longhorn Pipeline and when Craig Way was on with Chris & Jason).

That would be nice. But the reason it's on OAI is because of the signal strength.
On a clear night, WOAI can be over in over 30 states, and the Spurs like that radio signal.
I was in Destin during the Spurs-Lakers series, and I listened to the game on the way back from the beach on night. Pretty cool.
I can remember doing Spurs React and having listeners call in from Missouri, or Nebraska. Heck, it's tough to catch KTKR North of 1604/I35, especially after dark!
Sucks to see anyone make changes. I joke about ESPN VS Ticket760, but truthfully there is a mutual respect between all the hosts, and no one wants to hear the dreaded words budget cuts.
It's a very tough advertising market right now, and I fully expect more cuts to come soon from many different media outlets.

There's a BMP Radio building that I pass in McAllen on my way to our warehouse there. The lights in the lobby are always on and there are always cars in the parking lot, so I've always assumed it's a studio of some sort, even though there aren't any stations listed on the sign.
Pitch dark and empty parking lot when I drove by on Sunday night...
:lol
(I know I shouldn't laugh at the misfortunes of BMP, but fuck 'em. They fired Dawn, so :lmao )

I honestly didn't like the Thompsons too much this time around. They joked way too much in my opinion. They are funny, but I wanted to hear about sports more than anything. I am not trying to be mean, but I won't miss them all that much.

Oh yeah, I am trying to figure out if Mike Taylor is a wannabe Chicano or a hick? His voice changes from time to time.

I believe Taylor is half Hispanic.
BTW, other than Coach A, with the THompsons gone, college football is likely to get very little run on the zone. I'll give Burns and Everett that... they talk a lot of college football.
IMO, college football is king. I'd also like to hear more high school football talk. you know, talk up some of the top players now so that we can follow them through their college days and make a stronger connection with the high school programs.
For example, you could have Jim Rakley on every day, if for nothing else, a motivational minute. Point is high school football coaches are quintessential texas football.
Just my opinion.

If I were in charge there at BMP Radio, I would switch Coach A with Duel and Minix. I would give Coach A the 3-7 slot and put Duel on 11-1.

I'd dump the shit out of Minnix, re-hire the lovely and talented Dawn and make it the Dawn & Chris show, and make Track Smack a 4 hour show.
And I'd give Dawn a huge raise...and her own covered parking space...and a personal assistant (I'm available)...

you flip to Paul Alexander, hang around a little while after, then the Thompsons, then Chris Duel.
SA radio is improving.
Station won't last past February.

Great to have The Zone online, I'll be able to listen online for the first time tommarow :)

Duel
Coach A.
Everything else is shit.

Gamenight is good, ESPN radio's best show IMO.

Your show and Paul Alexander's will be much better than anything ESPN will offer.

peter's show is better now that it's spurs season...as much as dawn is a great person, relatively nobody gives a shit about the wnba or tracksmack...
Thompson brothers? haven't heard much of them, but what i did hear i liked...
thing is...they seem pretty effin expendable if they are the first cuts made everytime...must be a ratings thing...
and if i didn't already believe from i guess what i've heard from here and there that Jay Howard was a topnotch asshole, then i'd probably be more psyched for espn...as his voice is a blast from the past no doubt...
good luck to you all...:wakeup
