Sen. Juan "Chuy'' Hinojosa, D-McAllen, filed Senate Bill 105, which also would limit future increases after the two-year moratorium to the inflation rate, measured by the Consumer Price Index. Additionally, it would require fees not specifically allowed by law to be imposed only if approved by a majority of students.

This shit really needs to get done. School costs are skyrocketing and if there is ANYTHING that deserves to be better funded by our government this is it.

See, I'm not for artificially reducing the price of things in most cases like these, because they'll find other ways to inflate costs.

However, I would like to see a law that limited the amount that they could raise on current students from year to year. If a student has spent three years in a school, it would be akin to blackmail to suddenly raise the rates a great deal on them. I think they should create a law that limits the percentage that a tuition can be raised annually for current students.

Of course this would go into effect after I finish school. It is completely necessary, though - it still amazes me that this generation is graduating with an AVERAGE of $21,000 in student loans. In any progressive country, I think that's unacceptable.

There's a scene an episode of the West Wing where Toby is talking to a random guy at a bar. He finds out that the guy is visiting colleges with his daughter and has no idea how he's going to pay for her education, and he says something to the effect of, "You know, I didn't expect it to be easy, and I don't think that it should be - there is something to be said for making sacrifices for this. But it shouldn't be this hard."

San Antonio needs another state university - costs at UTSA have skyrocketed, but costs at schools like St. Mary's, Incarnate Word, and Trinity are astronomical and cost prohibitive to most middle class families without large doses of financial assistance...

I doubt that would happen any time in the remote future with the new A&M campus there, Texas State right up the road in San Marcos, and the main UT campus in Austin. I'm not saying it's fair, but Houston is more populated than SA and they have a comparable number of state universities in the same sized area. I don't know if more universities is really the answer. It's not like there is a lack of spaces open at the existing schools.

The reason UTSA is becoming overwhelmed with students is precisely because Houston lacks enough universities to serve its population and while there still maybe unused capacity at UTSA, costs have become very prohibitive for middle class families without tons of scholarships, grants, or bucket-loads of student loans...lets not be like Houston, lets keep our forward thinking going and support the growth of the new A&M campus in south San Antonio...

when i was at uni, i paid the same unit costs in the first year out through the term of my course, so if you enrol the following the year prices will increase cause of inflation and ur locked into that price for the term of your course...
