A grand jury in Willacy County, Texas, has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to alleged abuses of prisoners at federal detention centers, CNN and the Associated Press reported.

According to the Associated Press, the indictment is connected to Mr. Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group. The company reportedly holds interests in the prison companies in charge of the federal detention centers.

Mr. Gonzales is accused of blocking an investigation into abuse at the detention centers while he was attorney general.

A spokesman for the vice president said he has not received an indictment.

Willacy County is on the US-Mexico border in the southern tip of Texas.

Will there be jail time for this?

The elected officials of the tiny county, recently, have been entangled in a series of political controversies. Amongst other things, the District Attorney has sought the removal of the local sheriff, county clerk, and district clerk. Meanwhile, the Sheriff and the two clerks have petitioned the district court for the removal of the District Attorney. In recent weeks, the District Attorney has gained even more attention for his actions concerning the dismissal of a Capital Murder charge against a confessed assailant because of, he claimed, an appropriate time to prepare. However, he found time to file, the very next day, a petition for the removal of the County Judge.

On November 18, 2008 a Willacy County grand jury indicted a number of political figures, including Vice President Dick Cheney.

Indictments have not yet been made public and a district judge still has to sign the indictments. Two state district judges were also indicted along with State Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr.

In order for this not to be waived off by presidential pardon, it has to be presented as impeachment proceedings. And no one's going to do that. These guys are going to get away with torture, murder, and who knows what else.

If a federal official committed a crime in a county for which the official did not have immunity, the grand jury in a county with even a population of 20 could indict that official. The propriety of the indictment has nothing to do with the size of Willacy County -- but I'd be quite surprised if any of the charges alleged in the indictment occurred in Willacy County, which would make me wonder about the grand jury's jurisdiction.

Nothing but a fine may ultimately come of this, but a conviction is a conviction and Cheney will join a very dubious crowd of ex-Bush officials that will have been convicted of a felony count..

Unfortunately I doubt that Cheney will be around long enough to see his conviction for torture, and even if he was I doubt that his health will allow him to spend much time in prison....he will ultimately will have to face jury in a much higher court than one here on earth...

Given the seemingly-apparent want of jurisdiction in Willacy County, I'm not sure that even a fine is a reasonable expectation from this indictment.

But I wouldn't call his case threadbare or his persecution complex unfounded. His office has already convicted three county commissioners on prison related bribery. Mr. De LaRosa's family has collected $47 million from the indicted prison company for wrongful death. An appeals court has ruled the special prosecutor appointed to investigate Willacy DA Guerra was improperly appointed, and all charges against him were dropped after he lost the election this month.

Just guessing here, but I think the charges against Cheney and Gonzales will be dismissed.

The prison has already paid a wrongful death judgment, so it may have something to answer for here.

you have to understand how things are done in South Texas to fully appreciate it, which for geographic purposes you just cut off the bottom most tip and add a few counties just north and northwest of said tip.

Guerra was the Willacy DA for 20 years. There's no telling how many self-important dicks he had to step on to justify his sinecure, or how many people wanted to squash his self-important dick in return.

This didn't just happen overnight. Like everything else in South Texas, it has a convoluted and somewhat tortured history.
