Dallas Cowboys blog: Further evidence that Tony Romo really is a swell fella

03:06 PM CST on Wednesday, November 19, 2008

By TIM MacMAHON / The Dallas Morning News [email protected]

A homeless man who goes by Doc was cashing in change at a Cinemark theater in Dallas when a guy walked up and offered to pay his way into the movie. Doc, who planned to spend his day passing out flyers for a few bucks, accepted a rain check before realizing that he recognized the generous gentleman.

"Was that Tony Romo?" Doc asked the kid behind the counter.

It sure was. Doc hustled across the street to the consignment store that paid him to occasionally pass out flyers and requested the day off. By the time he got back to the theater, "Role Model" had already started.

Romo, who confirmed the story but didn't want to elaborate, waved Doc over to sit by him and his buddy. Doc sheepishly mentioned that he hadn't showered in a few days.

"Don't worry about that," Romo said. "I'm used to locker rooms."

And so the $67 million quarterback and a man who doesn't have $6.70 to his name sat next to each other and shared laughs for 90 minutes or so.

For Romo, who made news by changing a couple's tire on the side of the road on the way home the night of the season opener, it was just another kind gesture to a random stranger. It meant the world to Doc.

"For me, it was a blessing," Doc said. "It came at just the right time. It gave me some encouragement and faith in mankind. I just wanted to say thank you."

so if the guy is a complete scumbag off the field, Rae Carruth, Lawrence Phillips, Michael Vick, etc...it is ok, as long as he wins.........you and your views are why our society is jaded with respect to it's stance on sports.

i want the Cowboys to win......but i also want class acts on and off the field. This is why i am so proud to be from San Antonio and to have the Spurs as my team. Those guys win on the court, but they are even bigger winners off the court.

I give them jobs.

At least I try to, when I offer them the jobs I always get "I'm holding out for something that pays more"

Yes, someone that has nothing is holding out.

You missed the point completely.
He didn't "give a homeless man $7."
He took a man most people would walk right by, and spent time with him.
He didn't have to do that.
I'm sure that made this man feel great, even if it was only for a couple hours.

He supposidly didnt want it to get out but the Cowboys PR people caught wind of it hahah give me a fucking break. This bitch wants the attention and wanted people to know this. Its a fucking movie, if I was homeless that last thing in the fucking world I would want is to go to a movie with a football QB. Romo should have given him like a week stay in a hotel so he can shower and sleep in a fucking bed without being cold on the street. How about a 20 so he can buy some bread and stuff to make sandwiches. Just the other day outside of a Walgreens a homeless guy asked me for a few bucks. I dont carry cash so what did I do I bought him some food inside and brought it out to him. He was thankful and started eating right then and there. If I had the kind of money that Romo does I wouldnt take a guy to a movie, id take that fucker to eat and help him out in a way that would benefit him. A FUCKING MOVIE!! I bet Romo didnt even get him a hot dog or popcorn.

Yeah I guess but like I said if he wanted to really help him he could have. I doubt the guys was begging outside of the theater asking for someone to buy him a movie ticket.

I want to hate Tony Romo. I mean, it's interesting that he gets the maximum possible benefit out of this story: first, the fact that he took a bum to the movies is publicized; second--and this is important--the fact that he wanted to keep it under wraps gets publicized; and third, the fact that he helped a couple with a flat tire a while back is re-publicized. It makes you wonder if maybe, just maybe, he or his publicist had a hand in getting the word out.

But, still, what a nice guy. Fuck the Cowboys.

For all the people saying this isn't "media-worthy," it's not like this was a full front page story evangelizing Tony Romo's act on par with the election of the 44th President of the United States, it was a blog entry.

The people that read team or sport-specific blogs (well, hell, any blog really) are those who really want to know the ins and outs of that subject.

It's from a Cowboys blog on a Dallas newspaper's Web site. Oh, the horrah because a sportswriter mentioned something people in that particular community love to follow.

If Tony really wanted to cheer him up give him a case of Jack Black or give him a job in the Dallas defense backfield.

And that's truly the unfortunate thing. You don't know who is really needy, and who is out to take advantage of kind people.
I've given food to people before, but I will NOT give money.

I have a co-worker who used to work at a station in Phoenix. They did a story once on how much panhandlers can make in a day and it was something outrageous.

It really is too bad we don't know who to trust.

He could have something, or his publicist could have or it could have been someone at the movie theater. No one knows for sure and that includes you.

LOL fuck yeah I would say what took them so long hahah. Was it a good deed yeah it was he could have ignored him like im sure we all have done from time to time. Im honest I dont give all the time, and im sure Tony doesnt either. Im just saying that this story does seem like an attempt at attention whoring but your right Mike none of us really will know. Its possible either way. Shit if Romo did do this out of the kindness of his own heart then props to him because not only is that something I wouldnt do but I hate to say it but its a risky move. When someone is homeless who knows what kind of desperation they might have in their mind. The guy could have pulled a gun and seen dollar signs and try to rob him. Shit maybe he didnt even know who he was. I had a friend that was homeless for a year and lived under an overpass. He told me he did all kinds of stupid shit for money. He used to do some of those bum fights for like 20 to 30 bucks a fight. He said some of those guys would get the SHIT kicked out of them for 10 fucking bucks sometimes. He said he went days without eating. Maybe Romo's heart was in the right place and maybe we didnt get the full part of the story. For all we know we he might have given him 100 bucks or something. I just feel that the PR team wanted to feed some positive off field activity since the cowboys have been getting bad press all season. Who knows??

Really, you want class acts eh? Then you can't really be a Cowboys fan then can you?

People are full of shit when it comes to their favorite teams. "I like when my players are classy and aren't getting arrested"........Bull Fucking Shit.......you like when your team wins championships, if it takes a little pitbull beating, or wife beating to do so, you really don't give a fuck because you don't know these people in real life.

Sure it's nice to read a story from time to time of a pro athlete doing something like this, but get off your high horse and quit lying to everyone in this forum including yourself because if Romo had kicked the homeless guy in the nuts but still went out and beat the Redskins that weekend, you would have been just fine with that too.

Actually you can be a fan of the Cowboys or any team and still want that team to be full of players who exhibit class on and off the field. Doesn't mean its going to happen though. Even though the majority of the players have not had scrapes with the law, odd are that at least one or two will no matter what team you root for. I do agree though with the rest of your post. Most fans care about winning period and do not care how it is achieved or by who. When Michael Irvin had his troubles with the law, I didn't cheer him any longer or buy anything Cowboys related featuring him but I am positive I was in the minority.
