View Full Version : Are the Spurs Too Young to Win a Championship

(Here's the new conventional wisdom.)

The San Antonio Spurs are too young to win a championship this year or in the immediate future. Saddled with a large group of young players, rookies and D-League promotions, it will take more roster magic than Greg Popovich can dream up to bring this unbalanced group of young and inexperienced players into the playoffs.

Consider these facts:

Tony Parker, 7 yr vet G--26
Roger Mason, 4 yr G-28
Bonner 4 yr vet F-28
Ian Mahimi I yr vet C-22
George Hill, Rookie PG, 22
Blake Ahern, 1 yr. vet SG, 24
Anthony Tolliver, Rookie F-23

Why, even veterans like Manu Ginobilli and Ime Udoka are barely into their 30s. Furthermore, the Spurs have reportedly stashed a few more young players overseas to get them off breast feeding status before they return to play with the big boys of the NBA. If they come back within the next few seasons, the Spurs will be positively coltish.

So the outlook for the Spurs is dim in the immediate future with too much youth and inexperience. [sarcasm/]

When he allows these thoughts to manifest onto the computer screens of many it makes him feel good. It's a self feeding experience. You could call it a confidence boost.

Too young and too athletic-- O, cursed Front Office! I hope to god they don't make a mid season trade and make the Spurs too talented.

the presence of bowen, finley, thomas and vaughn balances out the age question.
duncan and manu are just at the right age group to win a championship.

To be able to compete with Lakers and Celtics, they need an athletic centre who excels in rebound and defense. They also need a good defending SF. If they can swap Ime/Bruce/JV/Bonner/Oberto/KT/Spitter for these 2 players, then the back court advantage can overcome the other teams' front court advantages. Otherwise, SPURS are still not top tier contender.

I thought I'd heard the Celtics are older.
I don't care enough to do the research...it's just what I thought I'd heard.

Suns have gotta be the oldest team.....which is pretty sad for a team that was labeled a young up and coming team in 2005. Things change quickly I guess when you trade Joe Johnson for Boris Diaw.

Nope. Spurs are still technically the oldest at 30.64 years old, then PHX, then the Clippers (pre-trade). Boston's pretty far down the list. Median age is about 27 years.

Isn't Oden the only player in the league with osteoporosis? What is he, like 50? Pretty clever of you guys to pick up a guy who can count as young and old at the same time.
