We made our annual trip to scavenge Spurs gear with the wife to the NBA Store in NY, before it gets any colder (was 27 degrees today). When we make it to the store, I see a long line on the circling ramp that goes downstairs. I look up at the big screen monitors, and there is Magic Johnson autographing his new book. I lean over on the ramp and sure enough, there's the guy. So I tell my wife I'm going to find out what do I need to do to get on the line while she does some shopping in the store. Well, you had to buy the book, then take the receipt somewhere else to get a ticket, then get to the line. So I do all that, and get in line. After about 45 mins, and the wife joining me in the line, we get in there. We shake hands, and I tell him "We're just good old Spurs fans". He smiles and tells us, "Well, you guys beat us enough". We laugh, and then he proceeds to personalize the autograph on the book, and takes a picture with the two of us. Turns out the event was happening there from 11 AM to 1 PM today, so we got real lucky. After that, we got some more Spurs stuff, and headed out. Definitely a great and completely unexpected experience.

He smiles and tells us, "Well, you guys beat us enough".

Eh....we beat them twice when it counted. Not nearly enough.

We have a ways to go before we catch up on the annual beatings they gave us through the 80's and 90's.

Cool story and obviously a very nice guy.

If you get a chance to go to that store, by all means do so. On that ramp I mentioned they have a lot of pictures hanging on the wall. There's 2 GREAT pictures of Manu and Tony each. There's also another of Duncan. They also had a large poster of Duncan with his eyes closed, all gray, with the new Brotherhood theme that was really cool.

Cool story! I saw Magic at a Dodger game in August 1991. There was a ring of a few hundred people surrounding him as he walked to his seat. It was impossible to get close enough to say hello. Jack Nicholson, however, will say hi when you see him at a Dodger game. Yeah, he goes there too.

Is he holding a ball?

No. It's like just his face. Like that picture with him with his eyes closed with the banners behind him. But it's all gray, and says something about the Brotherhood at the bottom and the Adidas at the top. I tried to find it online but couldn't.

I have a few from the new promotion but not with his eyes closed. I've got older adidas stuff with his eyes closed but it's full length.

Thanks for the info, if it's out there I'll find it. :)

just don't agree with people making heros out of people that have multiple sex partners while cheating on his wife. Great role model for his kid!

But all an all i guess in these days that makes the guy a class act. not like he raped anyone

I wouldn't consider him my hero. I don't consider any sport player a hero for that matter. I do however think he's been an incredible talent, definitely looked like a great guy for the brief interaction we had, and his help on different communities and projects is unquestionable.

And FWIW, that his morals don't agree with yours doesn't make him any better or worse than you. Maybe you could take less time judging people morals and start taking a look at what an excellent athlete he has been. Certainly his hard work, dedication and love for the game inspired many players.

Yeah, that's so awesome of the NBA Store.
You never know who'll appear (without searching the schedule on the site I guess).
You hit the jackpot meeting Magic.

rather meet him than Karl Malone.

athletes CAN be classy. Online the other day on NBA 2K9 i met Marcus Camby's cousin. although he did say the Clippers are a great org with nice people, he had nothing but expletives for Baron Davis.

he got HIV before he was ever married, moron. even if he did cheat on his wife, which he did not, he wouldn't be any different than the majority of married men and women in this country.

go back to whatever cave you live in.

This is what it looks like. I just took it from a screen cap on the adidas site. I'm sure the image is basically the same but with TD only and made into a poster.

I stopped by there when I was in New York in June. I'm assuming a shit load of Spurs fans go there, because they were completely out of Spurs hats (either that or they don't sell enough to warrat having them there : /)

When I bought my shirt and was waiting in line 3 out of the 5 people in line, including myself, had Spurs gear they were buying. Pretty damn creepy.

I think that's supposed to be a real life sized Allen Iverson. They have also a Shaq and a Yao Ming IIRC. They also have a wall with molded hand prints from different players, including TD. Even Nash has huge hands compared to mere mortals like me.

You can definitely get Spurs hats there, and they always have at least 3 different styles. Some are by the entrance, while the rest are by the official Spurs jackets and pants section in the bottom floor. One thing I noticed also is that they have more Spurs stuff there than at the AT&T Center Fan Shop and the prices are cheaper too.

Magic will regret forever that he contracted HIV. Still, I know many, many people who did the same thing and they, like Magic, are not out there spreading it. Magic is a class act. He has become a billionaire because he has played his cards right. He has invested, bought, sold, and employs a lot of Americans while he's at it. He is the envy of many business people. He does more for our country that many people who talk but don't walk.

And he has time to take a picture with Spurs fans in New York City. I'd wait in line, too, to get a smile and a few words from him.

You should've asked him, "Hey, how's that AIDS thing working out for ya?" Personaly, I never believed he had HIV. :nope I thought he used it as an excuse to walk away from the game when he did, and no one would question it. Plus, he knew it would bring him TONS of media attention. But at least, he did alot for AIDS funding. Not saying he's a bad person, but he is a glory hound.

Magic is easily one of the nicest and most positive people I've ever met. The first time I met him I was at the airport and saw the Lakers waiting for their plane. I went over to Magic, told him I was a huge fan, that I cheered for LA over Boston once the Spurs season was over, and that I saw him hit a half-court shot the last Sunday on CBS. I didn't have anything to get autographed, but I got a picture and Magic talked with me about basketball and school for maybe 15 minutes or so. This was probably around 87 or so, and I was around 8.

Later on when I went to UCLA, I saw and talked to him all the time at our basketball games, and he was still the same classy guy who always had a positive attitude towards his fans. I don't think I've ever heard from anyone who had a negative experience meeting Magic.

On top of being a god of basketball and an all-around great guy, he's a hell of a businessman too. :toast to Magic.
