Even with their experienced starting backcourt sidelined, the San Antonio Spurs are finding ways to win. The Memphis Grizzlies, meanwhile, keep losing despite the strong play of their young guards.

The Spurs go for their fifth win in six games Monday night as they travel to Memphis, which will be trying to avoid a third straight defeat.

San Antonio (6-6) is coming off a 119-94 rout of Utah on Friday, as it hit a season-high 51.9 percent from the field. Roger Mason started his seventh straight game at point guard in place of Tony Parker, who suffered a sprained left ankle Nov. 7, and scored a season-high 29 points on 10-of-17 shooting.

“I wasn’t going to go too crazy, but it was one of those nights,” said Mason, who went 7-of-10 from 3-point range. “Definitely felt good. If I had an open look, I was mad if I missed one.”

The Spurs started 8-of-9 from beyond the arc and finished at a season-best 60 percent (15-of-25). They’re shooting 40.9 percent from 3-point range and are 5-2 since Parker was injured.

“I think when we get everyone back, (Mason) will give us the depth we’ve been looking for,” said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, referring to the absence of Parker and Manu Ginobili, who could make his 2008-09 debut next week after offseason ankle surgery. “I thought he was excellent at both ends tonight. He took advantage of offensive situations and played a really fine all-around game.”

So did rookie reserve George Hill, who scored a career-high 23 points as the Spurs’ bench outscored Utah’s 55-34.

Tim Duncan, who had 18 points and seven rebounds against the Jazz, is shooting 54.7 percent from the field this season - his highest percentage since his rookie season of 1997-98, when he made 54.9 percent.

Duncan averaged 23.1 points on 59.4 percent shooting in his first eight games at Memphis, but has scored just 15.5 per game and hit 44.8 percent in his last four visits.

While San Antonio tries to push its record above .500 for the first time in 2008-09, Memphis (4-9) is just looking for a win. Saturday’s 103-94 loss to the Jazz was the Grizzlies’ sixth in seven games.

O.J. Mayo led Memphis in scoring for the fifth time during this 1-6 stretch with 23 points. Mayo, the NBA’s leading rookie scorer at 20.2 points per game, is averaging 22.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in the last seven contests.

Second-year point guard Mike Conley scored 14 points for the second straight game Saturday, while adding a season-high eight assists and not committing a turnover. Memphis, however, committed 18 turnovers.

“It’s like they are all little pests out there, slapping at the ball,” said Conley, averaging 12.3 points, 5.0 assists and 55.2 percent shooting in his last three games. “I think we just got a little too carried away. We started crying to the refs a little bit too much, looking for fouls, instead of staying aggressive.”

Memphis is among the league leaders with 16.4 turnovers per game, but faces a San Antonio team that has forced an NBA-low 144 turnovers this season.

The Grizzlies have won six of the past 10 meetings with San Antonio in Memphis, following 13 consecutive home losses to the Spurs.

Notes:

Spurs:

When asked if G Manu Ginobili would be returning anytime soon, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, "Manu will play when he is ready."... Four Spurs were in double figures in the first half. ... San Antonio, which led by as many as 30, hit 15-of-25 3-pointers, the most so far this season. The 60 percent also was a season high.

Grizzlies:

The Grizzlies are one of just three NBA teams with two players averaging 20.0 or more points per game - G-F Rudy Gay (20.0) and G O.J. Mayo (20.0) - joining the San Antonio Spurs (F-C Tim Duncan and G Tony Parker) and the Dallas Mavericks (Fs Dirk Nowitzki and Josh Howard). ... In the 12 games following Memphis' season opener, the team that has won the third quarter has won the game. Overall this season, the Grizzlies are 4-1 when winning the third quarter and 0-8 when they don't. In those nine losses, Memphis had been outscored, 252-192, in the third period. ... Mayo's 210 points in his first 10 NBA games can be topped by only two active players, C Shaquille O'Neal (238) and G Allen Iverson (224). ... In its first four games, Memphis held opponents to 85.3 points per game to rank fourth in the NBA. In its last eight entering Saturday's game against Utah, opponents were scoring 103.6 points per game on 46 percent shooting. ... The average age of Memphis' starting lineup (Gay, Mayo, G Mike Conley, F Darrell Arthur and C Marc Gasol) this season is just 21.4 years old.

Hill vs Mayo
Rudy Gay vs Bowen
Duncan vs Gasol
Fabricio vs Darrell Arthur

Should be a good game. Spurs need to come out with energy as this is a trap game after a beatdown of the Jazz.

NOTABLE

Spurs are coming off 119-94 victory over Utah, in which they set a season-high for points in regulation. The only other time they’ve scored in triple digits this season was a 129-125 victory at Minnesota that took two overtimes to complete. ..... Spurs are looking to get past .500 mark for first time this season.

I would like to see how Hill can handle Mayo IN SPURTS. Otherwise, Mayo's a pretty lethal in the mold of a young Steve Francis and can hurt you with his scoring so I'm hoping we can lock him down with Bruce or Jacque and occasional flashes of a double team from the wing when he's out on the perimeter.

I really have lost alot of faith in Ime Udoka, although we might need him because we still have Mike Conley to contend with.

This makes one wonder if Mayo remembers the SL game and will go aggressively at Hill. If this is the case then Hill will need try to prevent himself from taking the assignment too personally, because Mayo could easily get Hill in foul trouble. He needs to play smart defense and take what Mayo gives him rather than forcing the issue too much to try to prove a point.

Spurs visit Grizzlies at FedEx Forum (http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=nba/news/news.aspx?id=4193400)

(Sports Network) - The San Antonio Spurs will attempt to get over the .500 mark on the season Monday when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Spurs won for the fourth time in five games Friday when Roger Mason dropped a season-high 29 points and George Hill contributed a career-high 23 points in San Antonio's 119-94 blowout victory over Utah, the Spurs' 19th straight regular season win at home against the Jazz.

Tim Duncan played third fiddle to the offensive prowess of Mason and Hill but still contributed 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists for San Antonio, which continues to play without stars Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

The Grizzlies also played the Jazz in their last outing, losing for the sixth time in seven contests when Mehmet Okur scored 23 points, leading the shorthanded Jazz to a 103-94 victory on Saturday.

Rookie O.J. Mayo had a team-high 23 points -- including 10-of-10 from the free throw line -- for Memphis.

Rudy Gay had 21 points, while rookie Darrell Arthur scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the loss. Mike Conley added 14 points for Memphis.

The Grizzlies, who have lost three of four and 10 of their last 12 meetings against San Antonio, are 3-3 at FedEx Forum this season while the Spurs are 3-2 as the visitor on the year.

It is going to be tough to win this game.

Last year, both games at Memphis went down to the wire, and the Spurs had to come back in the 4th quarter for both games.

In the first game, Manu took over in the 4th and the Spurs squeaked by in a 3-point victory.

In the second game, Parker was out with an ankle sprain, the Spurs were down 20+, and mounted a comeback in the 4th, only to be denied overtime by a Rudy Gay buzzer-beater 3.

I don't expect anything like an easy win tonight.

Memphis owns us in the regular season. Then we own them in the playoffs.

Unfortunately, we don't have to worry about Memphis in the playoffs this year, but we do have to worry about our gottamn seating.

Grizzlies hope to take advantage of shorthanded Spurs tonight (http://www.grizzliesonline.com/index.php?/tumbleson/comments/preview_081124_spurs/)
by Matt Tumbleson

The Grizzlies host the visiting San Antonio Spurs tonight for their first of two contests this week against the four time NBA champions.

Game summary: As mighty as the Spurs are, the Grizzlies have taken a game from them in each of the last six seasons, except for one (2005-06), and with the health issues that the Spurs have dealt with thus far the Grizzlies have a chance to keep the trend going tonight.

The Grizzlies missed a chance to knock off an ailing top team in the West on Saturday when they fell to Utah despite the absence of both Deron Williams and Carlos Boozer. With both Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili expected to miss tonight’s contest because of injuries, the Grizzlies will hopefully be more opportunistic this time around.

Here are five things to look for in tonight’s contest:

Lesson learned?: After their 109-94 drubbing of the Kevin Martin-less Kings last Tuesday it seemed that the Grizzlies had figured out the fact that they needed to take advantage of situations against teams that were dealing with injuries. Unfortunately, opportunities against Mavericks, who were playing without Josh Howard, and the aforementioned Utah Jazz this weekend did not turn out so well for the Grizzlies.

With the Spurs in the house tonight the Grizzlies will have another chance to steal a win from a team that, when fully healthy and firing on all cylinders, could compete for the title this season. In a season of taking steps forward, the Grizzlies need to fully realize that they cannot let opportunities against shorthanded top teams slip away.

Getting it together: Over the last two games Mike Conley seems to have finally found his stride this season, after struggling to find his way earlier in the year. Through the first ten games of the season Conley only reached double figures once, but he’s scored 14 points in each of the last two contests and has everything moving in the right direction. And that direction happens to be right at the basket, as his dribble penetration has allowed for scoring opportunities at the rim for himself and his Grizzlies teammates.

Can we get a medic?!?: The Spurs have managed to keep their head’s above water this season despite the absence of Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili largely thanks to the stellar play of Tim Duncan, but also because of the emergence of Roger Mason in the Spurs offense. Many at the Spurs thought that Ime Udoka would continue his slow takeover for Bruce Bowen at the three spot for the Spurs, but it has actually been offseason acquisition Mason who has added scoring punch for the Spurs in Parker and Ginobili’s absence, averaging 15.2 points per game thus far alongside Duncan.

Matchup of the night: Darrell Arthur will get a look at the peak of what the power forward position can be when he faces off against Tim Duncan. In his 12th season in the NBA the two-time league MVP is still as effective as ever, showing that he still have enough bullets in his holster to carry the Spurs by himself in the absence of Parker and Ginobili. Duncan’s game is based almost entirely on coordination and fundamentals, which should bare a stark contrast to Arthur’s athleticism on the floor. Expect Darko Milicic to see extended minutes off the Grizzlies bench matched up against Duncan, as Milicic has done an admirable job against him in the past.

Stat of the night: The Grizzlies get a look at the model NBA franchise tonight with the Spurs in town. The Spurs might not only be the model NBA team, they also might be the model for excellence in professional sports. Consider this, since Tim Duncan joined the Silver and Black in 1997-98 the Spurs have the best winning percentage of any team in the four major sports, going 621-261 (.704 winning percentage.
