1) He's injured.
2) He's in the dog house.
3) Matchups.
4) He's being traded tomorrow and the Spurs don't want him going down with an injury.
5) Spurs want Brent Barry to be backup PG from now on.
6)left patella tendonitis? (aka Mengke Bateer-itis)

There's no way the Spurs would even consider trading him. I cannot find a reason of why he didn't play. Does anyone know?

I also wondered why he saw no time. None for Horry either. Is Rose being showcased?

The sideline reporter said Beno was healthy and it was a DNP-CD. I wonder if something is up trade wise.
It's either that or he was late to practice or something. I don't think he had done anything on the court to warrant a DNP.

That's what I thought. I just cannot see the Spurs trading Beno. San Antonio always had a weakness in the backup point. Now they finally have a great one. There's no way they would trade him.

With Raul Lopez out for the season and Carlos Arroyo on the Pistons, I'd give up any package of Beno + Rasho/Malik + Scola + 1st draft pick + cash for Carlos Boozer. If the Jazz see Beno as the next Stockton, the Spurs can't afford not to jump at getting Boozer.
Even though he's going to hell for tricking a blind man :)

Milt Palacio + Donyell Marshall to SA for Udrih and Rose?

TimVP, you are usually good at calling what Pop is going to do...what do you think it is?
Now I am quite knowledgable on the game(especially on the subject of PG's :) ) but I am an idiot when it comes to guessing what Pop will do...
I see conflicting things here...
#1. Pop hasn't had much of a look at Barry as back up PG. It seems very unPoplike for him to pull the trigger on a trade and throw caution to the wind with regards to our back up PG spot.
Although I know for a fact Barry can play PG and can play it well.
#2. But OTOH, Beno is a very tradeable commodity...you could get a nice player or move a big contract if Beno is part of the trade...Quality PG's are probably the second hardest thing in the NBA to get after Centers...
I could definitely see Beno being our best trade asset.
So, I really don't have a clue...I could see the possiblities of a trade...but it does seem kind of careless to trade a quality back up PG without having a good long look at Barry playing that role.
To make matters even more curious...Wilks was brought of the IR, and if Barry is going to be betting minutes at PG, that now makes us 4 deep...
You never know, it could be Barry that's getting traded.

02-24-2005, 12:19 AM
Barry and Beno will not be traded. There's no way. Also, the Spurs definently will not want Boozer. The whole reason they want to get ride of Rose is his contract, so consuming Boozer's 64 million is pointless. Nobody know why he didn't play yet?
Aggie Hoopsfan
02-24-2005, 12:24 AM
How can you say no way usckk?
There's only three untradeables on this team - Tim, Manu, and Tony (and I reckon if the right deal came along either of the latter two would be gone). I might give you Barry, because of Pop's manlust for him in the off-season and the fact he took less money to come here.

02-24-2005, 12:27 AM
By trading Beno, our backup point is a question mark. That position is important and trading a guy like Beno will make it our weakness.

02-24-2005, 12:29 AM
Whottt I think most likely Beno came late to practice or partied a little too hard in Denver. The only other option I think is the Spurs are packaging him to Utah for Boozer.
Udrih fits in the Stockton mold that Sloan needs/wants. Pop watched Boozer play all summer and would know whether he fits on the Spurs. Larry Miller has called out Boozer for being soft. He couldn't be any softer than Rasho.
Make it happen.

Man, Boozer next to Duncan would be phenomanal. But it's not going to happen tomorrow. Beno has just been off the past few weeks, I think thats all it comes down too.

Who gives a crap about what the Spurs do financially........? Thats their problem. I just want to be a fan of a winning team......

02-24-2005, 12:43 AM
HmmmI think TimVP might be on to something...
Boozer kind of looked up to Duncan in the Olympics...he was trying very hard to learn from Duncan...
Pop wanted Rasho to do that, but it hasn't worked out that way. He knows Boozer already wants to do that...
How about Beno, Scola and 1 or possibly 2 of the Spurs first round draft picks?
Beno and Scola will come fairly cheap...Utah gurantees itself a trip to the lottery, plus they get two additional 1st round picks...A PF who probably will be about what Boozer is, as well as a quality PG in Beno.
I could see Pop calling the Jazz, as soon as he heard about Utah trading Boozer to LA, and saying, "tell me what you want for Boozer, you can have whoever you want that isn't named Parker, Ginobili, or Duncan"
I could see Pop getting antsy enough over the Mourning signing to gamble on Barry as back up PG and let go of Beno...
And FWIW that would be an awesome trade.
Except...why are the Jazz trying to get rid of Boozer all of a sudden? Something is up with that guy...

02-24-2005, 12:46 AM
Beno and Malik for Marshall and Palacio would be ridiculous. Beno and Rose for Boozer would be incredible, but that's a pipe dream. Also, I'd never trade Rasho for Boozer. Not that Boozer isn't a much better player, but he takes spots Duncan likes on the block and he can't block a shot to save his life.

I could see Sloan liking Malik...Sloan likes tough players, people can bash Malik all they want, bu that mofo is tough.
But Malik doesn't put us at 8 million either...
But if Boozer comes here Scola is totally expendable...so I'd guess Scola would have to be part of the trade.
I dunno but it won't surprise me if the Spurs know some trick to get a trade done that our capologists haven't noticed...I remember no one caught the Ferry loophole.

02-24-2005, 12:52 AM

Don't see the Spurs making a move unless they can unload Malik. How badly they want to do that will dictate the deal. We are in first place after all, and our needs are a bit specific for just making any old trade.

Well, if the Spurs do trade Beno, then they better get some practice time with Barry, et al, at the point. The start of the 4th quarter, without Tony looked like the Marx brothers out there.

I wouldn't necessarily discount the trade possibility, but if you're thinking there's a deal done (or about to be done) why on Earth did Malik and/or Rasho play as much as they did last night? Wouldn't it be equally-dangerous to your trade to play those guys if they're going somewhere. Any trade of Beno would almost necessarily have to include one of those two, just to make the numbers work. I'd be more accepting of the trade idea if Beno and Malik had taken DNP-CD's last night, instead of Beno and Horry.
Frankly, I think Pop is giving Beno and Horry a chance to get some rest, but keeping them active just in case. If Horry doesn't play on Saturday, he will have gone at least two weeks without logging any time, which has to be a good thing for a broken bone and for his older body. I think the same principle applies to Beno as well. With Beno's fragility and the truth that he's a rookie, Pop seems to have had some concern about whether or not Beno has/will hit the wall. If you can give him a good long stretch of downtime, it makes sense to do that. Meanwhile, you get a chance to play Barry at the point to see if he can be productive there and you go vet-heavy against a couple of teams (Houston and maybe Memphis) that have tended to cause the Spurs some problems of late. That makes more sense to me than the possibility of a trade -- but, if they've actually managed to find a way to get Boozer, I'd be all for it.

I guess if you wanted to buy the trade talk and assumed the talk might involve Beno, here's another possibility (albeit one that wouldn't necessarily address the most pressing needs of this team):
Assuming the talk is true that Baron Davis is headed to Golden State (and assuming GS send back Dale Davis and Dunleavy), don't the Warriors have a glut of solid-to-good PG? Is it possible that the Spurs would deal Beno and something else (Scola, picks) to GS for, say, Speedy Claxton's cap-friendly contract (fairly low money and short years)? I'm completely talking out of my ass here, but there is some sense to it.

bringing Speedy Claxton back would be an absolute godsend.
I doubt however that happens.
BTW, Hey Mullin, WTF do you need 3 starting quality point guards for?!?!

I doubt this is even a possibility, but it would seem to make some sense.
FWIW, I read this morning that in trying to work out a deal for Davis, Mullin is actually trying to get the Hornets to take Claxton rather than Dunleavy, but that NO is holding out for Junior.
You'd think that if GS lands Baron at some point this morning or early afternoon, they'll flip either Claxton or Fisher in a quick deal -- otherwise, they're going to have an upset vet on that bench. Then again, it's not like they're going anywhere this year, so who cares if they have a monumental headache, right?

He might just be in PJ's doghouse. PJ was quoted as saying he was ashamed of the selfish play of his guards in the Rookie Challenge. This was in regards to questions on why the bigmen on his team, specifically the 1st and 2nd picks of the draft, didn't get more touches.
