Key Molecule for Life Found in Habitable Region of the Galaxy

A sugar molecule linked to the origin of life was discovered in a potentially habitable region of our galaxy.

The molecule, called glycolaldehyde, was spotted in a large star-forming area of space around 26,000 light-years from Earth in the less-chaotic outer regions of the Milky Way. This suggests the sugar could be common across the universe, which is good news for extraterrestrial-life seekers.

"This is an important discovery as it is the first time glycolaldehyde, a basic sugar, has been detected towards a star-forming region where planets that could potentially harbor life may exist," Serena Viti of University College London said in a press release.

Previously, glycolaldehyde had only been observed toward the center of the galaxy, where conditions are thought to be too extreme to host habitable planets.

Glycolaldehyde is a key ingredient for life. It helps to build Ribonucleic acid (RNA), which is thought to be the central molecule involved in the origin of life on Earth. Glycolaldehyde is a monosaccharide sugar, the basic unit of carbohydrates. It can react with the chemical propenal to form ribose, the building block of RNA.

"The discovery of an organic sugar molecule in a star forming region of space is very exciting and will provide incredibly useful information in our search for alien life,” said Keith Mason, chief executive of the England’s Science and Technology Facilities Council.

The finding, made with the IRAM radio telescope in France, was announced Tuesday and will be published in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Anyone who doesn't believe theres life other than on our planet somewhere out there in the universe has to be unaware of just how vast the universe really is. It doesn't take a sugar molecule floating around for me to be convinced since I was already to begin with.

Fucking Heathen. Everyone knows that there is only life on Earth because that's what the Bible says, and it's only 6000 years old, to boot.

It's absurdly arrogant too. You can say the word "stupid" if you want.

To think "Yeah, we're IT! The universe ends with US!! We're the most advanced intelligent creation God ever thought of!!"

Yet he only took 6 days to create our planet out of all eternity. And we can't even cure the common cold.

Yup...we're "it".

Does it really matter we find life on another planet when we can't even find jobs for the people already on our planet?

I will let you know when my online application for NASA produces an interview.

Where did I post scientific exploration is such a waste of money? I said finding 100 Billion dollar pack of sweet and low on Mars is meaningless.

Why not go to the childrens hospital and tell a 12 year old girl that has 3 months to live "don't worry we found sugar on Jupiter"

You want to go to Mars? then cure cancer first. You want to find life on Saturn then find Jobs for the people already on earth.

Whats wrong with balance?

And another thing why would we want to show others how to ruin their planet like we have ours? Why introduce them to Porn, the www, and Paris Hilton?

Sorry if my views on space are different from yours, From the looks of your attitude you display here in this topic it's no big secret your just upset that you can't get laid on this planet so you want seek elsewhere.

After all we need to find life on another planet so maybe they can fix our problems we have created here on earth.

When we can prove we know how to manage our own planet then and only then we deserve to look for another.

Here's what I know about Obama's stance on space exploration:

1. He wants to cut defense spending substantially...and a large pct of our defense spending goes towards the Space Program.

2. He long ago said he wanted to delay the Constellation Program(to return to the moon), by as much as 5 years.

3. He's going to cancel the Shuttle replacement.

One thing is for certain.....they'll be speaking Chinese on the moon...nice voting slick.

You have the right to say what you want, but your attitude towards science is trailer park shit. You're taking a completely asinine stance that advancing human knowledge is a waste of time. Besides, if it wasn't for the government putting huge money into science we'd have no Silicon Valley and none of those jobs.

Whott, you really are the biggest partisan douche on this forum. McCain also said he was slashing defense spending.

Uh McCain said he was going to cut the pork out of the defense spending...he didn't say he was going to ad-hoc cut defense spending...like Obama did.

In fact McCain made it clear he wasn't even going to apply his economic freeze to defense spending.

I can't believe you are trying to pass this off as a slight difference...McCain flat out said he considered the space program absolutely essential to our National Security....

Dude's a pilot...he loves the Space Stuff.

Obama OTOH thinks the Space Program is wasteful when people are out of jobs...he's right in tune with mouse on this one....not that he's actually going to create any jobs with his cuts...but that's what he likes to say he's going to do.

Don't lecture me on who I voted for when you picked someone just because she gave you wood.

Uh....the space program was a pretty big issue to me, I know I mentioned it a few times on the political forum. No one was paying any attention...they were too busy calling the McCain supporters a bunch of bible thumping idiots that think the earth is only 5000 years old....

I don't know how politics got into this....lol but in baseline's defense, I don't think who he voted for should play into a factor whether or not they support space exploration, because although space exploration IMO is a facsinating and promising area, the candiates obviously wanted to display to the general public solutions to immediate problems/areas of interest and for the most part the general public is not as interested as in space exploration as they are in other things.

The undertakings that NASA even thinks about, much less actually strives for revolutionize the world in ways we, the average citizen, wouldnt understand or care about until they put it in packages and sell it for less than $1000.

The sheer magnitude of a planned human expedition to Mars is to our current generation what the telephone was to Bell's. The human condition and the social sciences have benefitted immensely from NASA's ventures and jaunts into space. Human reproduction and the basic physical and emotional needs of a human being are addressed, observed, analyzed and spoon-fed to the rest of the world thru the unique isolation and lifelessness of space.

The philosophical principles and scientific theories on the basics of our creation and ultimate end are only explained thru the lense of a telescope in space.

To question what space does for us as humanity is to question what religion does for humanity. Only NASA is an actual applied science to the highest possible order of any generation, ever. NASA and the world's other space programs are a testament to our humanity, a rite of passage in the search for the ultimate truth.

How one could question such an activity is beyond me.

Big surprise that someone running church smack would think funding cosmology and physics is worthless. Damn mouse really got under Dark Reign's skin....I tried to do that all during the election and wasn't nearly as successful. I don't think I ever got him to cuss at me. Props mouse...

Big surprise that someone running church smack would think funding cosmology and physics is worthless. If you were born and raised in Africa, India, or Iran you'd almost certainly believe 100% that Christianity and the Bible were wrong. But you're in America, and Christianity is the established dogma.

I don't think the word wrong has come up yet. And it's not really the the Space program it's the Billions of dollars to find a pack of sugar on the moon that upsets people when that money could go to maybe someone like maybe um..............lets see....Paki,or LuveBones? to maybe help them live to be 40 years old someday? Is that to much to ask from a Godless person like yourself?

And on another note: What if you and your NASA Buddies spend another 500 Billion and they do finally find poof of life on mars and the building turns out to be an old church, then what?

What these quotes have to do with Sugar in space? I will never know, but I think we all can tell who really has scoreboard, do the math.

Fine. You win.

Look brah I may have went to far saying you need a female, ok i was way out of line thinking that is why your such a EThug with people.

I sincerely doubt you think that what I wrote was e-thuggish.

So I will give you a pass on you talking about my education, not having a job, being a loser,a wannabe comic, and a few others... But if your that determine to have a smack off ? and since you claim my smack is weak ? (which I yet to begin to use any real smack) then you should have no problem meeting me in the TRoll forum lets say around 11ish?

I already told you, you win. Honestly mouse, my rep with people like yourself means nothing to me, so you win. A smack-off? Seriously?

My advice to you...less time online, more time in the real world where dumbass suggestions about "smack-offs" only garner an odd look and a complete dismissal.

Blow me. When my voting habits revolve around the whims of my libido, you and I might have more in common.

Pack of sugar on the moon? You really are a retard. This is like arguing with a ten year-old.

This is like arguing with a ten year-old.

How many 10 year old's do you argue with that you have this type of info?
So your saying a 10 year old has no rights to fight with a stranger to try and keep his pants on, or until someone with authority arrives

what does age have to do with you and your Salad tossing cellmate in this topic that decided you to tell the waitress to place what's left of both of your cyber testicles, in a very small wet brown paper bag ?

You Run from the the truth and don't want to admit maybe i have a point? Don't be like Greg More, and Chris Duel, don't weasel out... face mouse with your fresh smack your famous for. :tu

No one has to win all the time, but someone does have to sometimes give a vato Vato credit when they have a point, S A.

But you want to fall on your sword for all to see be my guest, but tell me, what line did I use that made you pull a Roberto Duran?

was it the LoveBons and Paki card? come on you owe me....
