Whoo.

Crappy game for the few who came out on a Monday. The Toros tried to field a standard lineup against a very small Erie team but couldn't control the tempo to take advantage. By the time Coach Snyder found a lineup that cold compete (Gaines/M. Williams/Hairston/E. Williams/Ahearn) it was too late and they couldn't get stops down the stretch anyway.

Ahearn and Hairston had bad, bad games. Ahearn just looked slow and Hairston was trying to do too much on offense while not defending well. Marcus had a good game all around, but IMO spent too much time guarding smaller players while Erik Daniels continually beat whatever big man assigned to him off the dribble -- even after he seemed to injure his hip. Daniels was essentially a small forward playing center or PF and the kind of player Marcus looks like he's born to defend. He did a good job the few times he guarded Daniels -- definitely the most effective of the Toros.

Snyder tried a bunch of different lineups but didn't give Kris Collins a try. With all the small ball that the Spurs play, I was expecting to see a lot more four guards + one big or even four guards + Marcus.

Thanks for the pix and recap. Looking at the roster, I'm not overly excited about the role players. Williams and Gaines aren't really NBA prospects. It's basically Hairston and Ahearn (oh and Mahinmi when he decides to play) without any exciting prospects next to them. Even Hairston and Ahearn are more borderline prospects than exciting prospects ... despite those who think Hairston is Scottie Pippen reincarnate.

CD, is there any prospect on the team you think could have NBA potential outside of their Big Three? Have any hope for Williams or Gaines? Hopefully the Toros are as active this year as they were last year and infuse some more talent on the team.

I actually do see hope for Marcus. He's proving to be a pretty versatile defender. If he can improve one or two aspects of his game -- I think overhauling his shot might be the best bet -- I think he has a chance.

I have been pleasantly surprised by Eric Dawson's face-up game (in the first game) and steals. Today was a bad game offensively since he was played with Gaines too often and when they got down by 20, they needed Gaines' offense as the sole big man. We'll see if his timing improves -- he's getting more goaltends than blocks right now. He has come back from a season ending arm injury and surgery last year; he still has some kind of device on his bicep under all that wrap. Doesn't seem to be giving him trouble.

Gaines is kind of strange because he often plays like an undersized big man even when he has a size advantage. His release seems rushed at times and he could probably take the ball up stronger instead of using little layin or baby hook attempts. Defensively he was very undisciplined early but has gotten better. Tonight he was just too slow to guard Daniels.

The thing that really stands out to me is the reliance on iso and one-on-one plays by the Toros scorers. Sometimes it works fine when the matchups are right like against Tulsa, but Blake, Malik and Marcus aren't going to be able to do that kind of thing against every team in the D-League, and much less in the NBA if either ever makes it. The Toros just look like they need more ball and player movement on offense, as well as some plays designed to create some space for shooters and facilitating some cut and catches to the basket.

You do not think Ahearn will help that situation?

You do not think Ahearn will help that situation? His passing was adequate but not overly impressive. no one is going to make the Parker-like drives that Darius Washington or Keith Langford were able to do regularly that led to a basket or a pass and a basket. Blake tried it some tonight but didn't see some of the passes available to him. Marcus and to a lesser extent Malik can hog the ball as well.

Beat that strawman, LJ.

I listened the pregame show : RC, Lindsey and something like 7 NBA scouts were at that game. If all these people were there to scout Hairston, they should have been disappointed.

Mahinmi was out because of he sprained his right ankle during the first game. According to french newspaper, it is only a slight sprain and he should be back quickly. All these injuries damn suck for him.

I would rephrase your last statement to. All these dang injuries suck for the Spurs. Ian still to this day since 2005 hasnt learned anything but getting hurt. Ian=waste of time. Cant wait to eat those words. But in this league. The NBA, hes worse then Tmac. And hes still playing in Austin. I thought all the wise ones said he would be back already playing in the real league. Maybe by xmas huh?
