View Full Version : Mid Season trading: What's going to happen this year?

Last year, the western division shuffled quite a bit before the trading deadline. Historically, I can remember a number of times a team acquired a key player down the stretch that helped them win a championship:
1982 Lakers got Bob McAdoo, in 1987, Mychal Thompson. Detroit did it twice, Mark Aquirre in 1989 and Rasheed Wallace in 2004.
I am certain there are more examples, but the point of this thread is, what's going to happen this year?
Some teams may discover they aren't going anywhere and will unload some key guys and prepare for the future.
Who do you think will make deals? Who may be up for grabs? Who do you want to get for your team? (Be realistic, please). I get a sneaky feeling Phoenix may break up its team, and Shaq may be headed out. Perhaps Nash and Stoudemire too? I made a thread earlier about Shaq going elsewhere when his contract expires. Maybe Shaq to LA for Odom and Walton? Or, perhaps to his hometown of San Antonio for...(fill in the blank).

Odom is getting traded for sure... it'd be scary if the Cavs get him...

quite a few Spurs fans will claim that the Nazr trade 2005 delivered the title and considering his role in the Pistons 7 games series this isn't totally absurd.
the best bet for a big deadline move are the Cavs IMO.
they have the (expiring) contracts you need for such a move and they are willing to do everything at any costs to get a title 2009 or 2010, to either make Lebron stay, or to at least get one championship out of his time in Cleveland.
they could trade for either Vince Carter or Michael Redd when Nets and/or Bucks are out of the play off race and might want to get rid of the big contract. another target could be Camby, who will be on the market for the right price. (like Varejao plus Snow's expiring plus a pick and/or Hickson)

Lakers trade him to the team they might meet in the finals?

While nothing is for certain, the Chauncy Billups trade could herald in the very real possibility of a Nuggest vs. Cavs NBA Finals.
NBA would get 2 more of their premiere stars from the 03 draft into the Finals against each other.
And both teams have Pistons vets as part of the core of what they do: Big Ben and the Cav's new found defensive intensity, and Billups, with new found offensive discipline.
Both (while not immediate, and certainly not the SOLE reason) did come from trades that happened after opening day.

Im hoping the Nuggets keep rolling and by the ASG they decide to use the TE and bring in a big man.
I dont think Stan will, coz he didnt even want to bring back Juwan :lol

I do not hate Ron Artest, I just think with Tmac and Battier he is redundant....and we need a PG something fierce.

Odom for Hinrich makes so much sense it hurts.
CHI is lacking a playmaking PF that can run with Rose in the open court. Their front court is pathetic and they could certainly use Odom's rebounding skills. Plus he's a giant expiring so if it doesn't work out they can let him go. AND they get to shed Hinrich's K as they clearly have little use for him now with Rose turning out to be such a stud already.
LAL has been and is in need of a defensive PG. A PG with real playmaking skills that can run an offense and setup his teammates. Not forcing Kobe to be the distributor and playmaker would free up his game immensely. The perimeter D would obviously improve leading to less defensive breakdowns and allowing Bynum and Pau to stay in the paint where they do their most damage.

Chris Mihm and a sign-and-traded Ron Harper for Rudy Gay, OJ Mayo, Marc Gasol and a first round pick.

I would trade T-Mac before Artest.
When he's in the game, the players take on his identity and play with more tenacity.

I agree.
I agree.
I didn't realize it till we didn't have him the memphis game. Yao was playing like a pussy and it was a circus out there. Artest has finally started to fit in, he is taking close to the fewest shots on the team and is the 2nd leading scorer. One person i hope we trade is Rafer Alston. The guy thinks he is a fucking superstar or some shit, pulls up for a 3 on a 3on1 fast break :lol
Btw DaDa did you see Joe Johnson after Artest stuck on him? Battier is the best eteam defender, his transition D is flawless, but Artest didn't let Johnson score 1 pt and was the sole reason the Rockets beat the very good Hawks team with Bibby, Johsnon, and Josh Smith

Nash and Stoudamire and kerr for CP3 and Chandler.
I doubt any team will trade for Stoudemire if he is going to opt out anyways. They are better off waiting for him to be an unrestricted FA in 2010. Unless they sign him to an extension to complete the trade.
