Final: Spurs 98, Timberwolves 86 (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/spursworld/2008/12/gameday-spurs-vs-timberwolves-1.html)
By Joe Alexander

The Spurs dominated at the offensive end in the fourth quarter to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 98-86 Friday. The victory gave the Spurs a season-high five-game win streak.

Tony Parker had 16 of the Spurs' 32 points in the fourth quarter. Parker had only one points in the first three quarters combined. Parker also had nine assists.

Tim Duncan led the Spurs with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Manu Ginobili had 16 points.

FOURTH QUARTER

Tony Parker, who couldn't buy a basket in the first half, is up to 13 points - 12 in the fourth quarter. The Spurs lead 86-68 with 4:54 left.

The Timberwolves are on a 7-0 run. The Spurs lead was as high as 16 but is down to 76-67 with 6:44 left in the game.

Tim Duncan threw a nearly length of the court pass to Michael Finley for a fast-break basket. They've connected on that play a few times lately. The play gave Finley 12 points and the Spurs a 76-60 lead.

Tony Parker had seven assists before he recorded his first basket. Parker finally made a driving basket with 10:59 left in the game. He scored the Spurs' next two baskets as well. They lead 74-59 with 9:57 left and are pulling away.

THIRD QUARTER

Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili combined for 15 points in the third quarter and the Spurs head into the final period with a 66-57 lead.

Ginobili has 14 points, including seven so far in the third quarter. He has the Spurs' last three baskets. They lead 59-55.

Tony Parker made 1 of 2 free throws with 6:18 left in the third quarter. The made free throw was his first point of the game.

Duncan had six points early in the second half. He is up to 12 points and is the first Spur in double figures. The Spurs lead 50-47.

The Spurs opened the second half with their starting five on the floor.

SECOND QUARTER

The Timberwolves outscored the Spurs 9-3 to finish the first half and it's 41-41 at halftime.

For the Big Three, Manu Ginobili had seven points in the first half, Tim Duncan had six points and six rebounds and Tony Parker did not score.

Matt Bonner has nine points, hitting four shots from the outside including one 3-pointer. The Spurs built their lead to 38-32.

Roger Mason Jr. hit a 3-pointer, then had an assist that set up a Duncan dunk. The Spurs have their largest lead in what has been a tight game at 34-30.

The Spurs have two baskets in the first four minutes of the second quarter - a 3-pointer by George Hill and another one by Ginobili. The Timberwolves lead 26-25.

FIRST QUARTER

The Spurs' Kurt Thomas scored the last four points of the first quarter and the first period ended in a 19-19 tie.

The Timberwolves made the first run of the game with an 8-0 spurt. A driving layup by Ginobili halted it. The Timberwolves lead 15-11.

Bonner had an early basket and a 3-pointer. It's tied 9-9 at the first timeout. Bonner had nine points in the first half of Wednesday's victory over the Hawks.

Alright give George Hill all of Tony's minute. He totally sucks out there.

Spurs stinking tonight especially Tony.

George has played a lot better. Give him the minutes.

Tony looks like he hasn't gotten over whatever he had the other night. It actually looked like Foye and Telfair were relieved to see Tony on the court after expereiencing Hills D though.:tu

Hopefully Hill can pick up the slack for Tony in the 2nd half, if Tony isn't capable.

Wtf Was That Parker?

I'd bench him for that stupid ass shot.

I wish Pop wasn't so stubborn about playing Parker and give Hill some extra minutes.

i'm just joking, man. nothing serious here. ;)

no one could say he would score as much in the 4th, including me.

but i still think people are really quick to bury him. and it's not the same thing to notice that he sucked in the first three quarters, what he did greatly although the 7 assists, than to say bench him for the fourth

when you have stars in your team, and we have three of them, you know they can get hot at any moment and you go with them till the end, even if it ends with a loss. There's not so much case, minus injury or fatigue, where i want to see tim, tony or manu on the bench at the end of a game.

Well, against OKC, the Spurs just might be up by 20+ in the 4th...Pop would almost surely rest the starters then, especially with B2B road games against the Hornets and the Magic coming up.

Hill still should have gotten all those minutes earlier when he was playing better than TP. TP was given one more chance in the 4th and he played a lot better.

The problem we had was when TP was playing awful and George wasn't TP was out on the court getting minutes.

Yep calling people out after the game is stupid.

He should have said that to us at that point in the game.

I based it on how Tony was playing at the time. Fact is he was playing awful. The game before TP was given a chance at the start of the fourth to redeem himself and Pop saw that he didn't have it so he benched him for the rest of the game. I think Pop did the same tonight. If TP didn't start the 4th quarter playing well I think he would have benched him again.

Yep calling people out after the game is stupid.

He should have said that to us at that point in the game.

It is not like he is Finley or Bonner or Mason. He is part of our championship big 3. You ride those guys 99.99% of the time, good or bad.

Well maybe if you posters weren't so emotionally drunk you would learn that you lean on your best players even when they have not done great. Quit judging quarter by quarter and evaluate in chunks.

Normally most of us wouldn't react that way as I'm sure most people want TP out there. Tony was coming off of a bad game where he was benched in the 4th quarter and I'd say some of us thought he was still drained from that 2OT game so I thought it might be better to get him off of the court at that point. Also, Hill was playing pretty good so it would have been good to give him more court time.

I am sure later in the season you will see Hill out there in these scenarios more often. But for right now Pop is teaching. He has put Hill in at the end of a tight game before. But now, he wants him to watch what it means to have a bad 3 quarters, then pull it together when it matters. Hill sees this and he learns how it is a privledge to earn a coaches trust.

Thats what happens when you play crappy for 3 quarters before doing awesome. If he'd had more than 1 point before the 4th, it would've been ok. Manu had his points even between the first 3 quarters and the last one, but Tony just plain sucked on O. At least he handed out a bunch of assists.

Ducks most of us are going off of his last game. He had a 2OT recently and had looked like crap since then.

Pop benched him last game in the 4th quarter. I thought he was still tired. If Tony had come off of 2-3 days rest I wouldn't have been calling for him to be benched earlier in the game.

Surely people here can see this? For me it was mainly fatigue related when calling for his benching. I just thought he was still tired and I thought that was the reason for his poor game up until that point.

Different circumstances mate.

I thought TP was still drained from the Dallas game. It is not a good idea riding players when they don't look like they have the energy and are playing poorly.

Now if Pop was trying to teach Hill what you're saying then that turned out to be a good lesson :).

Maybe we should assume that TP and Pop and the rest of coaching staff know how to handle TP's minutes, and TP is conditioned enough to fight through fatigue and be a positive factor in a win.

He does he fair share of whining to the refs, and it does bother me, especially if it's not a dead ball and he doesn't get back on the other end.

But, in his defense, he does get hacked a lot with no call. It must get frustrating.

i saw so many games where manu was taking bad shots and TO prone and he saved our ass in the 4th. same thing with tim in games where he seemed so lost and still managed to get back in shape in the 4 th.

there's no way you put your stars players on the bench at the end of the game because they played bad if the game is still close. it's a confidence killer. if the player is obviously tired or injured, it's another thing.

Pretty happy with our overall performance. Could have been better, obviously. Glad TP showed up in the 4th.
