A 22-year-old Victoria man is in custody in connection with the stabbing of three people at a strip club.

Antonio Castro Jr. was arrested on suspicion of three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

"This was an absolutely brutal assault," Police Chief Bruce Ure said Thursday.

One of the men was stabbed at least seven times, Ure said, and another was stabbed at least twice during a brawl at Maximus, 1901 N. Ben Wilson St.

Two groups of men started to fight for the attention of Maximus staff shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Castro is accused of using a knife with a three- or four-inch blade to attack the men. Police have not found the knife.

"I'm not so sure he wanted this guy to walk away," Ure said.

Two of the men remained hospitalized Thursday after the stabbing. Russell Starr, 31, of Oklahoma and Jason Holland, 23, of Kansas were in stable condition at Citizens Medical Center. A third man, Freddie Comfort, 32, of Missouri, who was also stabbed, was treated for injuries and released, Ure said.

After the stabbing, Castro left the club with two other men, according to an arrest report. A bouncer described the car Castro fled in. An officer stopped the car at the corner of Eisenhower Street and Lone Tree Road.

Castro was in the back seat, his clothing covered in blood and a baggie beside him that police believe contained marijuana.

A witness also identified Castro in a photo lineup, Ure said.

Gang activity did not cause the fight, Ure said. The victims work on the railroad and were living temporarily in Victoria, Ure said.

The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission does not plan to temporarily revoke the club's liquor license, Lt. Mark Menn said. TABC can close a bar for seven days if it thinks a serious fight is gang-related or someone might return to the business to retaliate, Menn said.

"That doesn't appear to be the case here," Menn said.

Management at Maximus did not want to talk about the incident Thursday.

Thanks for stating the obvious, smart guy. I don't think you have to know anybody to see that this guy will be prosecuted...
