The Philadelphia 76ers fired coach Maurice Cheeks on Saturday, sources told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith.
Assistant general manager Tony DiLeo will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season, the sources said.
Cheeks' deal with the 76ers, who started the season 9-14, was guaranteed through next season.
After signing Elton Brand to a five-year deal worth nearly $80 million in the offseason, the Sixers have looked nothing like last season's up-tempo squad that advanced to the playoffs.
The 76ers had lost eight of 10 games entering Saturday night's game against the Washington Wizards in Philadelphia.
Cheeks, who as a player helped the Sixers earn three berths in the NBA Finals in 1980, '82 and '83, was in his fourth season as coach of the team after four years of coaching the Portland Trail Blazers.

To be fair to Mo, he should have been fired at 2 seasons ago.
And, this season's struggles are more attributable to GM personnel decisions that failed to acquire consistent perimeter shooting. Their three point shooting is abysmal, and a coach can't make average shooters great shooters, especially in a month's time. They could use a Kyle Korver type player.

Well Donyell Marshalls been doing decent but he's probably not enough to cover for the whole team

Good point. Pretty much the only thing the Sixers can do consistently on offense is run off transition, and that's not going to cut it long-term if you want to be a serious playoff contender. You have to be efficient in the half-court and Philadelphia just isn't. Not enough outside shooters or low-post scoring threats.

So in other words Cheeks took the fall for bad Front office decisions

How many coaches have been fired and took the blame for a pathetic front office.
When the Sixers have no shooters and Elton Brand has no one to pass to (who can actually hit a perimeter shot) when posting up, the halfcourt offense is ruined.

Sixers Looking At Hiring Eddie Jordan?
Dec 14, 2008 5:02 PM EST
Philadelphia general manager Ed Stefanski is rumored to be exploring the possibility of hiring Eddie Jordan to coach the 76ers.
Tony DiLeo, the assistant general manager that immediately replaced Maurice Cheeks upon his firing, could hold his job through the remainder of the season.
However, it remains to be seen whether or not Stefanski can hold off on hiring a full-time replacement.

Yeah whose spot will take it? They are not beating out Atlanta or Detroit for either the 4th or 5th seed.

Fifth coach to be fired this season. Fourth black coach. Right? Jordan, Mitchell, and Cheeks were premature fires imho.

Nevermind that the teams might be bad no matter who is coaching.
