I hear the ones that do not require wires are pretty wireless.

Linksys hasn't let me down. :tu

And don't shell out for an N-capable router unless you're sure you have an N-capable computer.

The G-band routers tend to be about 50 bucks less than the Ns.

I have a belkin and it works fine but the interface isn't as good as I'd like.

I currently have a Linksys WRT54G (ver. 2) running Tomato (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato) firmware, and it's pretty good. If you are interested in using an alternative firmware, do some research and buy a compatible router.

My Netgear crapped out on me the other night and I was having trouble with disconnects with that one. There is a decent Dynex I'm looking at. Anyone have experience with this brand?

I need to buy one as well, and I don't give a dang what it will be - I just need it to work, nothing else.

+1

G band is the way to go given the price difference.

I bought a Linksys model # WRT54G2 V1 a couple months ago and it's been solid as a rock.

I have a couple buddies with a Dynex router and I know they've had some minimal trouble getting Netflix to stream to their XBOX wirelessly. I'm not sure whether this is related to the Dynex router or not, but really, that's all I know about Dynex so that's my 2 cents.

Does anyone know if the difference between the mbps transfer rates make a big difference in speed?

Sure it does, but the 54 mbps you get with the G band routers should be more than enough speed for just browsing, streaming and the occasional download. Any extra speed you get with the N band isn't going to be worth it unless you're going to be doing a lot of media downloads wirelessly.

Just do what I do, buy a wireless usb adapter and steal your neighbors connection and download all the porn and free mp3's you can muster.

There is a Dynex Enhanced G router that gets up to 125mbps transfer rate and it's about $50. I do A LOT of downloading.

I tried already. All the signals I get are locked.

If I need a router, I just wait for Fry's to put their house brand Airlink crap on sale. Their interfaces can be quirky, but the stuff has worked as well as anything you could expect when you pay $20-30 for a Super-G or N router.

I just checked. Fry's has this one on sale for $15 if you or someone you know is near one of their stores:

http://shop4.frys.com/product/5208947?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

You'll need the matching adapters to get the full throughput, but it will work regularly with any g adapter.

I have both, Dynex in the dinning room, Netgear in the living room it's like apples and oranges. The Dynex keeps losing the signal and live streams or shows like CSI come in choppy. But it's still better than some of the others I would say if you can't do linkys or netgear then that would be my 3rd choice.

But the netgear gets many more signals and they come in smooth. I also noticed when i take the USB adapter off the 3 ft cord i use it's very hot. But the Dyanex is cooled or barely warm. So i think it's safe to say the hot one is really bringing in some good mbs just as a good 2.6 ghz processor gets hotter than a 223 mhz processor.

Also the neatgear software gives you a cool interface that allows many more options on different signals the security and controls of upload and download speeds. It even makes a chiming sound when it connects to the server so if you lost the signal and was in the kitchen you would know your back online and you can go check your downloads to see if the interruption caused a failure.

here are a few screen shots from today.............

it's probably not much of a factor for most people either, but N's range is quite a bit further than g - i would say about 20-30 yards further out depending on interference. Helps reach quite a bit further out into my yard

Once again, this only works if the laptop/computer you are using has a wireless card installed that is capable of N-band reception. While most of the cards being installed into Macs and PCs these days do, that's only been the case for about a year or so unless you've upgraded.

The majority of machines still out there are only capable of G-reception, but I know a lot of people spend the extra money on the N-router thinking they are getting the bee's knees when they are really only pulling G speeds and range.

Funny you say that. I just bought one for $14.99 from Fry's. I didn't think I needed a better one for now. It's Xmas season, and I just dumped allot of money wiring my place for CAT 6, but decided to use wireless too.

Thing is, the more expensive ones likely have a better processing speed. I do see a small lag going through the cheap router, but I'm not on-line gaming, so I don't need the best.

There's the kicker. Gaming. If you need those extra milliseconds of reaction time, ask a gaming geek.

one problem with cat-6 wiring and networking....when one bastard guy starts to dl a file, that user will hog up the bandwidth speed leaving the rest of users online at dial-up speed activity...this is the only problem i hate about it. Unless you start to allocate the bandwidth speed for each comp/port in the house.....
