He had the Lakers ranked #1 (no surprise) for the longest time even when their play had slagged off.

Boston plays a slower pace, therefore they adjusted the points to pace. No suprise since more teams play a much more offensively orientated game.

It would have been easy to get out the shovels and start throwing dirt on the San Antonio Spurs. They lost their first two games of the season, four of their first five and everybody was starting to panic and yell that it was finally the end of the line.

But that was forgetting two things - Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich. One future Hall of Famer on the floor and another on the bench and they never stopped believing. They didn't complain about a spate of injuries. They played through them and overcame them.

Now the Spurs are 14-4 since that horrid start and have pushed themselves right back into the Western Conference picture. And to think, they usually don't hit their real stride to after the All-Star break.

1 - BOSTON CELTICS - (Last wk: 1) - 22-2 - 14 in a row and counting. Who's going to stop the runaway freight train? Remember last season when everybody said Rajon Rondo was the weakest link? Now he's putting up triple-doubles and putting the spark into the running game of the Celtics.

2 _- CLEVELAND CAVALIERS - (Last wk: 2) - 20-4 - The double-figure winning streak finally was snapped in Atlanta, but that doesn't take any of the shine off what Team LeBron has been able to accomplish. Is Mo Williams the quietest big difference in the league?

3 - LOS ANGELES LAKERS - (Last wk: 3) - 20-3 - Everybody gets an occasional hiccup and the Lakers came when the defensive slippage finally got so bad that they forgot to play it in Sacramento. They are so potent and strike with a killing burst at any time.

4 - DENVER NUGGETS - (Last wk: 5) - 16-7 - After a back-to-back in Texas at Dallas and Houston, they'll go home to face LeBron James and Cleveland in a three-game stretch that could say a lot about how serious to take the new-look Nuggets.

5 - ORLANDO MAGIC - (Last wk: 6) - 18-6 - A one-point loss at Phoenix is all that's prevented a 4-0 start to a five-game Western trip that concludes tonight at Golden State. They'll be limping along without ironman Dwight Howard, who's finally been sidelined with a sore left knee.

6 - SAN ANTONIO SPURS - (Last wk: 8) - 15-8 - Let's count it up. Manu Ginobili missed the first 12 games of the season and Tony Parker was sidelined for nine. All that did was allowed rookie George Hill to get valuable playing time and now everything is back to normal.

7 - NEW ORLEANS HORNETS - (Last wk: 9) - 13-7 - They couldn't measure up against the defending champs in Boston. But who can? The addition of Antonio Parker wasn't heralded by trumpets, but could help get Chris Paul some needed rest, which will pay dividends later.

8 - PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS - (Last wk: 4) - 15-10 - Is the blooming coming off the rose? It was around this time last year when the young Blazers began to cool down considerably. Now they've lost three in a row and have to prove that things are different.

9 - HOUSTON ROCKETS - (Last wk: 7) - 15-9 - Team Limp gets Ron Artest back into the lineup and now will have to play without Rafer Alston. Will they ever be healthy? Any week that includes losses to the Grizzlies and Clippers can't be considered a good one under any circumstances.

10 - DALLAS MAVERICKS - (Last wk: 10) - 13-9 - The good news for Mavs fans is that Josh Howard is out of the walking boot on his bum ankle. The bad news is he's still not ready to return to the lineup. The other good news is it hasn't stopped Howard's teammates from picking themselves off the floor.

The irony if it is Stein lives in Dallas.

Marc has always said good things about the Spurs and respected that they play the game the right way. It really is hard to believe that he can do this and stay the lead man for ESPN's NBA section.

Stein has always said really complimentary things about the Spurs, Mavs, and Suns. When those three teams were all competing at the highest level, I think he really enjoyed his Rankings. It must pain him to see the East Coast teams performing so well.
