The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have waived guard Blake Ahearn. The 6-2, 190-pound Ahearn was originally signed by San Antonio on 11/16. He appeared in three games for the Silver and Black where he averaged 2.7 points in 6.3 minutes. Ahearn was assigned to the Austin Toros on 11/30. In six games with the Toros, he averaged 18.8 points, 6.2 assists and 2.3 rebounds in 34.3 minutes. The Spurs roster stands at 14. http://realgm.com/src_wiretap_archives/56006/20081215/spurs_waive_blake_ahearn/

maybe another team wants to scoop him up and the spurs were nice enough to let him out of his contract.

15 roster spots, 3 PGs (Tony, Vaughn, Hill), 5 Wings (finley, Udoka, Manu, Mason, Bowen), 6 Bigs is balanced (Bonner, Tim, Oberto, Thomas, Mahinmi, Tolliver). I think we are pretty happy with our current PG's and Wings... I'd guess another big, who will compete with Tolliver in the short term - either a veteran (Deke), or a D league (Sims). Personally, I'd rather have Deke's size this season, Tim is the largest big on the roster, and he's not huge. Deke could play last year (TRB% 18.1, BLK%5.7 PER 14.5, TS% 59.1, by comparison Tim had TRB% 19.6, BLk% 4.3, PER 24.4 TS% 56.9). I suspect Dikembe's size might be more valueable when defending teams with big Front line like the Jazz and the Lakers.

Could just be that Mahinmi is ready to go back down and the Spurs have seen enough of Ahearn to think that he can play but won't be a useful asset to them anytime soon.

We now have a huge gaping hole at 4th string point guard. All is lost.

I wasn't that impressed by Ahearn the couple of times I saw him playing with Toros. I was quite puzzled about the interest to have a prospect PG when you have 2 young PG (Parker and Hill) locked with long term contracts.

I also wonder if Toros will try to do a trade to grab a quality PG. They look quite weak at this spot.

ChumpDumper

Not too big a surprise. Ahearn is just too bad a defender for his shooting to mitigate.

The Toros are pretty screwed though. The main reason they are winning is because of their three pointers. They could probably try to trade one of their reserve big men for another point guard. No one outside of Squeaky Johnson is playing well at all. I'm a little surprised Tack Minor and Robert McKiver are still on the team, but there likely isn't anyone better in the player pool right now.

I liked Ahearn. He was doing well for the Toros. Seemed like a Spurs kind of guy. Smart player willing to work hard. Obviously has talent. I certainly like him more than Vaughn. Maybe this opens up something for someone else. Good luck Blakey Blake.

I wonder if cutting Ahearn indicates a better chance for Tolliver staying on the team. With Bonner's solid play I would think Tolliver would be more expendable, but who knows.

Ahearn does a few things well, but he's just not an NBA athlete.

NOBODY who saw him at Missouri State would have expected him to have lasted in the league as long as he has.

So Ahearn go the same six-game Toros audition that Darius Washington did last season.

FWIW, Tolliver has played five.

The last game was the Andre Brown show, but Albuquerque has such a bad front line that it could hardly be avoided.

Got any proof to back that up? Not like I hope you're wrong, but you shouldn't be saying shit like that with no proof.

I'll eat my words if you do, though.:king

I couldn't find any videos on Sims w/c is strange. What's his offensive game like; he has a terrific % from the field and his shotblocking is great. A bit too skinny though and probably a good project but won't have an immediate impact.. get a veteran big.

Maybe the Spurs won't sign anyone.

In this economy, I don't think it's a stretch that the Spurs might look to save the 150k+ that another player signed at the minimum pro-rated out for the remainder would be.

It's not like anyone they signed would be playing anyway.

Jeff McDonald: Duncan a POW, Ahearn a free agent (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2008/12/jeff-mcdonald-d-15.html)

Two bits of news here from Spurs Land:

Tim Duncan (you might have heard of him) has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week. Duncan averaged 22 points and 12.5 rebounds in helping lead the Spurs to a 4-0 mark.

Duncan's best game of that span came in a 133-126 overtime victory at Dallas on Tuesday in which he tallied 32 points and 14 rebounds.

Meanwhile, the Spurs bid adieu to point guard Blake Ahearn, who was waived Sunday. Signed on Nov. 14, Ahearn appeared in three games for the Spurs before being assigned to their Developmental League squad in Austin.

The apex of Ahearn's brief career remains his H-O-R-S-E victory over Manu Ginobili (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2008/11/jeff-mcdonald-a-16.html).

This is a good sign because it means Ian is ready to start playing again. So that means they won't sign anyone until after he comes back to the Spurs.

IF the Spurs sign someone, I'm hoping it's either Malik Hairston or Marcus Williams. Getting one of those two locked in for this season and likely next should be a priority for the Spurs...even if they spend the rest of the season in Austin.

Of course, that means one of Mahinmi or Tolliver would end up back with the Spurs.

Guess we'll see...

Thanks.:toast For anyone who watched this, how did Sims look? A watched a little bit, but I was distracted. Even if i had been scrutinizing his play, things like bball IQ, spacing, post O, post D, ballhandling would've escaped me. He looked solid from what I saw though. And he seems to be good at drawing fouls.

Something in the works here perhaps.

If anything, they should have waived Vaughn or do a 2 for 1 trade using Udoka/Vaughn and get a SF that can just defend. Oh ya, throw in a 2nd round pick too. There you have it.
