What is the deal with James Gist? What are the plans to get him into camp next year, and a possible roster spot?

I have been reading a lot about him, and he apparently is doing pretty darn well in Europe.

That would be worse than the Scola trade.

Not impressed with Gist. If he had what it takes he would have beaten guys playing in Austin. Not only that, much like Matt, Gist wouldnt have to beat out tough guys for minutes. He is where he belongs. Learning how to play basketball at a very low level. In Europe................

Gist was sent to Europe to scare Tiago Splitter into fleeing to the states and frighten any more current NBA talent from even thinking about crossing the Atlantic, lest they have to compete with him at any point. When his work is done at the end of this season he'll get the tower of Pisa standing straight and impregnate as many women as possible, single handedly creating the next generation of superathletes and all but guaranteeing a solid gold sweep for Italy in the 2032 Olympics. After all that hard work he'll need a vacation, so he'll come to America and take it so easy that he'll only average a quadruple double through the NBA regular season. He'll get a finals MVP for logging the NBA's first, second, third, and fourth quintuple triple on the way to sweeping in the finals.

Right now he's a 4, but I'm pretty sure the long-term plan is for him to expand his perimeter game and become a 3/4 (combo forward).

In other words, you've never seen him play and don't know a thing about him (specifically that the Spurs still retain his rights and will probably bring him over as an athletic tweener 3/4 to replace Ime next year).

Life doesn't give James Gist lemons, life asks James Gist what his favorite fruit is. With that said can someone please tell me a little more about him I know very little. I watched a Maryland game last year and he played well but obviously there's so much hype for a reason.

Basically, he was the Spurs' best player in Summer League, displaying athleticism, shotblocking ability, and all-around energy.

DEVELOPING STORY:

James Gist just kicked Chuck Norris's ass and stole his lunch money again... But has apparently been invovled in a "run-in" with Matt Bonner that has left him broke, bloodied, and left to question his manhood. :smokin

He was a tweener.

Scouts didn't think he had the size to play the 4 or the skill-set to transition to the 3, thus the fall.

He's got the athleticism, length, and motor to be a solid contributor in the league, he just needs to take advantage of the time in Italy to work on his ouside shot and perimeter skills overall.

Hells yes. I didn't really know either, so I'm glad for the update.

Does anyone consider Pop's brain fart that sent The Gist to Italy a wise decision? If he comes back with fundamentals worthy of Timmy I'll eat my words.

It was wise. It allows him to develop without taking up a roster spot. Also, IIRC Bruno (or maybe CD) speculated that the Spurs wanted to sign him to a 2-year deal, and doing so this past offseason would have made him a free agent in 2010. As it is, he can opt out of his 2-year deal in Italy after this season and come over next season.

I would have liked to see him against better competition. I've learned that summer league performance can be a very inaccurate judge of a player's NBA potential (see: George Hill).
