View Full Version : Furcal back to Atlanta

According to Ken Rosenthal, shortstop Rafael Furcal has reached an agreement with the Braves. He came up with Atlanta, of course. Furcal just needs to pass a physical. Rosenthal believes the Braves offered three years with a fourth-year vesting option, and Furcal chose that over Oakland's guaranteed four years.

Now we're left to wonder what happens with Yunel Escobar and Kelly Johnson. Dave O'Brien notes that the Braves have inquired on young starters such as Zack Greinke and Paul Maholm. Danny Knobler says the Braves will likely put Furcal at second base and Johnson in left field.

Big coup for the Bravos....

Yes their infield had some depth, but as djohn14 mentioned, they could move Kelly Johnson to the outfield where he's spent some time earlier in his career. Or they could trade Yunel Escobar for some young pitching or even in a mega-deal for Jake Peavy.

The bottom line on this signing is that it certainly gives them more options than they had less than a week ago when Burnett took the Yankees deal.

I thought we were screwed after that.

Sure as hell looked like he was plan A, B, C AND D for the Braves.

Hopefully this signing allows them to get back in the Peavy hunt....if it doesn't cost them Heyward or Hanson.

FWIW, ESPN is reporting that it's not a done deal and that the Dodgers have now entered back into the negotiations.

WTF?!?!

the braves never seem to make many good off season moves. i mean we need to concentrate on pitchig more than anythign right now. not signing another infielder. i do love furcal though and was pretty mad when he left.

btw fuck teh yankees and all teh stupid money they throw around. i bet bobby was pissed when burnett decided to go with them. the braves need to stop sitting on money like its going out of style and start tryign to get some poeople. or at least keep the ones we bring up through the system.

i think i saw somethign on espn, take it for whats its worth, that peavy liekly will be a dodger to start the season. theyre syaing they will trade him if it comes up but that theyre not shopping him around anymore. maybe a ploy by the GM to try to get more out of him?

I saw that to. Furcal has 2 agents. One negotiating with LA and one with Atlanta. Im still fairly sure he will oficially (passed physical) be a Brave by tomorrow afternoon. They are just giving LA one last shot.

Furcal as a Brave doesn't seem to jive with the World According to Bobby Cox. Other than a few bench players, have the Braves ever "taken someone back?" (Honest question: I'm no Braves' fan.)

Tom Glavine...not many though.

Grienke wouldn't be a half-bad comprimise and he would allow the Braves to keep more of thier talent in the organization.

About the young guys, which of them do you think has a realistic shot at earning a full-time spot with the big club this year? My best guess would be that Schafer and Hanson get a shot...

Me personally. I would like to keep Escobar and package Kelly for pitching. Grienke would be great...maybe Matt Cain. Schafer and Hanson...they will both be in the bigs...probably by June, but im not sure if they will start out the season in ATL. Depending on who we sign, Hanson has a good chance to be a 5 starter now, and since Frenchy is the only outfielder we have penciled in then Schafer has a good chance to start here. The Braves would like to not have to put them in the show just to get them a little more seasoning, but honestly....they might have to because we are running out of options for the back end of the rotation, and unless we sign Abreu or trade for Dye or Ankiel, I really dont see a big market for outfielders out there.

word out here in la is furcal got offerred a 3/30 mil deal by atlanta but he might have to move to 2nd. he went back to la to see if they will match that offer because the dodgers would use him at SS which he prefers

honestly i havent kept up much at all this offseason with the braves or baseball in general. it just seems like we always either let players leave when tehy become free agents wtihout really tyring to persuade them to stay, or we trade young players for someone else and then when that person becomes a free agent we let them go.
im surprised mccann hasnt been traded somewhere. :downspin: or frenchie for that matter. and im ean i guess kotchman is a solid first baseman but i was a hbigfan of teixeira. wish we would have re signed him, and yeah i know we didnt bring him up.
i jsut think we need to focus more on a good to great pitcher more than we need to be worrying about signing furcal and forcing him to switch to 2nd to accomodate him on the team. and then moving kelly to outfield. where does diaz go then?

apparently watchign the braves offseason moves is like watching a chiefs game. i get all excited, then the 4th quarter comes and the dissapointment follows soon after. :depressed

is their a plague in atlanta or something? i mean seriously? i feel atlanta is just a player or two away from being a contender again, but not if the mets keep signing players and all the braves plyers of interest end up not coming

bring back TED TURNER

Furcal's agent is a sack of shit, and so is Furcal for defending his actions.
