I know a lot of ST posters are not a big fan of the national media coverage of the Spurs...especially ESPN.

Well, I was listening to the Tirico and Van Pelt radio show today and they had Jeff Van Gundy on talking about the NBA.

They asked him who are teams in both conferences that have a realistic shot if winning the title.

JVG said they were 6 teams: 2 in the East (Celtics and Cavs) and 4 in the West (Lakers, Hornets, Rockets, and the Spurs).

Tirico seemed surprised that JVG mentioned the Spurs. So he asked Jeff some questions about the Spurs being able to contend for the title this year.

JVG said (paraphrasing) that with Tony and Manu going down the Spurs had to develop a bench with Hill and Mason. He said Hill has become a solid back-up point guard and Mason maybe the steal of the FA signings in the off-season.

Also, he gave credit to Bonner playing well since he's started and now the Spurs have developed some depth and can be a team that could come of the West this season.

I know most of you will take his comments will a grain of salt...especially after what he said during the game against the Heat earlier this season that the Spurs had the worst talent in the league around Duncan after Parker went down.

It's interesting how a perspective can change as time passes!! :lol

Tirico is a douchbag; not surprised.

However, I have lost some respect for JVG, since he backed down on his comments about the referees who officiated the Mavs-Rockets series

While you're right that there's little love for ESPN overall, most folks around here like and respect JVG. He's always had words of praise for the Spurs when they deserve it and he's one of the few that actually knows his shit in general over there.

JVG sucks off the Spurs any chance he gets.

JVG is the best ESPN man in my opinion.

I respect JVG.

He seems to have a bi partisan view on basketball.

expect when he always raves about Mcgrady.

JVG is not only a knowledgeable basketball commentator, he has a sense of humor that I didn't expect.

I had to agree with Mr. Van Gundy on that "worst talent in the league" title. Back then it really did seem that outside Duncan its a bunch of either too-old veterans or too-new young people.

What commentator lambasted the officiating of the Spurs-Mavs series in '07 (I think JVG was still a coach then)? I think Barkley mentioned it a few times, I can't remember if anyone else did (though I do remember a couple articles about it).

Agreed. JVG has always been praising Spurs over the years especially since he himself is an defense oriented coach.

All of ESPN has wet dreams over the Lakers/Celtics but at the end of this year Duncan will fill a hand with rings and hoist his 4th Finals MVP and will be the real MVP of the league again.

Mark it down.
