Meh, he played pretty well against the Rockets, Mavs and Nuggets recently. This may have felt bigger because it's nationally televised, but it's not the first "big" game we've had in the last month.
Up until the fourth I'd have said he still had a decent game because of his work on the boards and his decent effort on defense at times but it was pretty bad in the 4th quarter. Oh well, hope he bounces back.

12-18-2008, 12:26 AM
I honestly thought his D was pretty good overall...actually, I felt he earned his place on the court tonight with everything but his shooting.
He's not going to ever be be clutch guys, you can just forget about that shit...what we can hope for his maybe he'll have a Sean Elliott moment at some point. If he hits over 40% from 3 for the season he'll pull a defender against everyone but Phil Jackson...and that almost counts as being clutch.
Spurs do not have any clutch players...and that was my biggest fear with losing both Barry and Horry...old and injury prone or not.
Kurt Thomas, Matt Bonner and Michael Finley have got to be the most unclutch trio in NBA history...
Bitch about Bonner all you want...but would you rather have had Thomas out there instead? I wouldn't.

what a big game LOL it's December..
he just had solid games against Dallas and Denver..it's a coincidence..
Move on. Horry and Barry aren't coming back. Bonner didn't shine tonight, but it could have been much worse. Bonner showed me some athleticism I was previously unaware of. He has the ability to be ferocious on the boards. The shooting has been due for an offgame; that's just a fact. Why bash him after lots of near perfect shooting?
Besides, NO was sagging off him a lot, and early. He'll nail some shots next time.
I'm gonna give Matt Bonner a second chance. One off game happens. Lets see how he comes back. Tomorrow will not count as the Orlando Magic ain't nothing to be scared about. But I want to see how he handles himself with a real team like the Hornets next time.

No it's not...this was the biggest game of our season for first place in the division against a young hungry team....
It was not a meaningless game and the fact that he sucked ass when left wide open for most of the game was telling...
Here's the deal though...this team doesn't have anyone that is clutch on the bench really....
Oberto and Bowen might be the only ones that even come close....
Bowen probably should have gotten minutes down the stretch tonight as his 3 is probably the most reliable and he's been in so many big games.
But I don't know who you sub for Bonner...it's not like fucking Kurt Thomas is clutch...he is decidedly unclutch.

the game's loss definitely wasn't entirely bonner's fault. popovich's questionable decision to leave west open to double paul, finley's missed open jumpers, manu turnovers, and NO good defense on duncan all contributed. but it was bonner's choking away his jumpers that lead the charge. can't spread the floor for duncan if you don't make the shots.

Fucking hilarious...Bonner's been here 3 years and you're like...give him a chance. Barry was here 6 weeks and you were throwing around words like gutless and heartless...
Truly classic take :tu
Admit it...if Pop is left to his own devices he'd surround Duncan with 36 guys that can't hit a shot to save their lives under pressure...as long as they hustle.
I have to recant my opinion that David Robinson's career would have been different if he'd had Pop all along...
Pop would have surrounded him with the same damn chokers he was surrounded with anyway...the only reason he hasn't done it to Duncan is that his attempts have been thwarted...until now..
And now he's built one of the most unclutch benches possibly ever assembled in NBA history. It's hard for me to think of a greater one...except for maybe some of Drob's teams.
No one gets a hard on for hustling chokers like Gregg Popovich.

Nice spin...
#1. Horry was signed for his defense and to keep him away from the Lakers.
#2. The very next year Pop went after Karl Malone. Then he went after Karl Malone again. Horry's career only lasted this long because Pop was unable to find an effective choker to his liking until landing Kurt Thomas.
You can see if two players are of similar skill...Pop will take the choker every time.
Finley, and Devin and Beno, over Barry(even with Barry here).
Hedo over Jack
KT over Horry...
On and on and on...like I said, the only reason Duncan hasn't had rosters that choked as bad as Drob's is because Pop's best attempts have been thwarted.
Dude wanted Chris Webber over Drob...probably would have played him over Duncan if he'd gotten him too.

Give me a fucking break with all this choking bullshit.
Bonner has been absolutely unconcious and playing above his head (shooting wise) for weeks now. He was bound to have an off-night sooner or later.
It sucks the Spurs lost, and it's a shame they wasted a very good effort with their collective poor shooting, but sometimes a defense forces a team to make some outside shots and the opponent can't take advantage on a particular night. That's basketball.
N.O. does everything they can to congest the lane against the Spurs and take their chances. They could of (and probably should have) been burned by it tonight, but they weren't, so props to the bugs for the win.

Yeah and he focused on other parts of his game to compensate for his bad shooting...
Doesn't change the fact that he puckered wide open in the biggest game of the year...and it's not like this is a one time thing.
I like Bonner, I truly do...as I said earlier, it's not like Kurt Thomas is a better option...
He's a legitimate NBA starter...he's earning his spot.
That said, the man missed upteen wide open threes, and you will not win any title when you do that...especially if your name is the Spurs...and it's not like it was hard to see this coming with Bonner based on his career up till this point.
I'm glad he hasn't lost confidence...but the Spurs are not here to build Matt Bonner's confidence...he gets paid multiple millions of dollars per year because he can hit 3 pointers from the PF position...and if he's not doing that when he's wie open against top level competition...then he doesn't need to see the fourth quarter in big games...and he's not earning his money.

Why don't you guys that defend wide open choking just put "I hate Tim Duncan" under your names...
Or better yet...how about, I want to see Duncan have to score on 4 guys instead of just 2?
This wasn't just another game...it was a benchmark game and what did we find out? Doubling Tim Duncan is going to be an easy and painless option for the Hornets in the post season.
It's up to Bonner(and Finley and Mason) to make that a scary option...and they didn't do that tonight...they had the easy job.
So while you guys are propping yourself for your support of the underdogs...just remember, that while you are doing that and Bonner and co are buttclenching...Tim Duncan, who busts his ass in practice and the offseason to be the best player in the NBA and then puts out the effort on the court to justify that claim, is getting his ass kicked in the post because those lovable underdogs can't hit an open shot like they are paid millions to do...

I know, I know...but Bonner won't feel the pressure as much as he did tonight...when it's the playoffs.

It's good to know that I could go miss wide open threes being paid 2 mil a year while Duncan gets his ass kicked...and fine folk like timvp and tpark and every other asshat choker apologist in this thread would have my back.
Where do I sign up?
I can grip while Duncan has two guys on him, as good or better than Bonner can, and I'm more of an underdog...pay me 2 mil a year to do it. I'll even dye my hair red :tu

Brilliant take...because the odds of Duncan being doubled are definitely going to go down in the playoffs. Coaches don't ever look for who to double off of...it completely skips their mind...it's not something they pay any attention to whatsoever...

And you can use that time machine to make it so Barry doesn't have a chronically torn calf and isn't shooting 25%.
And you can give ploto her posting style back.

You say that like it's a good thing...it's a horrible thing.
What really sucks is watching James Posey play for the Hornets...
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't he available this past summer? While we were resigning Findog and Kurt Thomas?
And guess what....regular season game or not, he's going to play a whole lot like that in the playoffs...for 5 mil a year while we pay KT and FinDOG nearly 7 mil a year to miss open shots...

It was a benchmark game. And what we learned is that the Spurs can beat the Hornets in NO if they just make their shots; which Bonner has been doing great for the past 3 weeks.
Get over yourself.

Dude...you've gripped more about losing Barry than I have...what I'm pissed about is resigning KT and Michael Finley...two personas non gratas as far as the O'brien Trophy is concerned.
It's easy to find guys that can miss open shots and be left open against our top rivals...we didn't have to pay 7 mil for it.
Without a doubt...the second Phil Jackson saw KT and Finley resigned...he JIZZED IN HIS PANTS.

Now you are in full plottto mode and will probably remain in this mode for the foreseeable future. Even though Horry no longer plays basketball and Barry is shooting 25% with another torn calf.

Um...I disliked Finley long before he replaced Barry.
I don't dislike Mason...I just haven't see anything to indicate he's clutch.
You don't like Bonner
Um...I've been one of the biggest Bonner jockers on the forum this year and I'm one of the guys that said he was probably as good or better than Scola(a choker himself)...
What I don't like timvp...is the he missed a buttload of open shots tonight against a team that took us to 7 last year, that plays in our division, that matches up with us well and that we are likely to meet in the playoffs..and I wasn't surprised...and neither were you....yet you and your ILK...defend it.
or Thomas because they replaced Horry.
I definitely wanted Horry over Thomas...I also don't like that we gave up a #1 pick for him and are now paying him like 4 mil a year..

Barry can be out there in a wheel chair and not be the guy getting doubled off of unless there was a defensive breakdown...it's not so much that I like Barry...I just don't hate timduncan as much as you do.
What I don't like timvp...is people apologizing for blatant choking.

No it's not...this was the biggest game of our season for first place in the division against a young hungry team....
It was not a meaningless game and the fact that he sucked ass when left wide open for most of the game was telling...

Fortunately for the Spurs Duncan has too much class and dignity and understanding of the game to throw his teammates under a bus the first time they fail to perform. I guess you must never have screwed up not even once. Amazing..:nope

And I guess this must have been the first Spurs Game you have ever seen if you think this is the first time Matt Bonner has failed to hit shots under pressure. It's what he has done most of the time. Don't get all righteous when you don't have your facts straight...
This is his third season with the team and he hasn't come close to showing any sort of knack for hitting big shots...tonight was the rule, not the exception.

Very convenient of you to ignore all the good games he's had this season for stepping up.. or that he has made great strides because Pop has started showing confidence in him. This is a tribute to Pop that he's modified his handling of Bonner and it has made him a more producxtive player. Who can sauy if he had tried this approach years back the Bonner woul have bloddomed earlier. He did show good promise of what he was capable of season's back but then he got injured. I'm just glad the Spurs players, coaches and FO are sober-minded professionals who can calmly analyze what needs to be done instead of acting in some knee-jerk fashion. You think Bonner isn't up to par, wait til after the playoffs before you pass judgement because I don't think the Spurs are ready to give up on him just yet. Maybe you should respect them because they probabkly know lots of things you don't.

:lol ok raspa...Matt Bonner is the clutchest player in NBA history and has done nothing but knock down bigshots throughout his career...
Every shot he took down the stretch tonight he belived was going to go in...you could see it in his body language.
There my head is now in the sand and I am completely in a state of denial, like yourself...
Happy now raspa? :)

The regular season has a looooong way to go. They'll be many more important games. Bonner choked this game and chances are he's probably a choker ........ but it's too early to bury him just yet.
It's awesome that the Spurs play tomorrow night and that Bonner is starting so we can see right away if he'll let this choke job linger or shake it off.
Early prediction is he will choke against Dwight Howard. Matt isnt gonna do well against teams with great bigs. Matt only plays well against teams like the Thunder and Kings. Wheres this kid Ian? If he doesnt play well soon. Then we're just playing for nothing. The FO cannot believe that Matt is the answer to Fab and Kurt. And the FO has got to know Timmy isnt gonna carry this team on his back. He couldnt last season, and he wont this.
I dont see the rationale behind taking 15 shots. Its understandable the crazy .600 shooting streak wasnt going to last forever, but taking so many shots on a completely off night, just doesnt make any sense. When ur hot you take 5-8, when your not you chuck up 10 more?

I'm almost amazed that after the last couple weeks Bonner has had...it took ONE bad game for the haters to come out in full force.
Forget about new big men this year. We are all lucky Pop loosened the grip on this team enough to acquire Mason and Hill. Sucks for Mason that Finley gets minutes he does not deserve.

yes it was an important game. That game could have made the difference between getting home court against the Hornets if the spurs meet up with them later in the playoffs.

As a person who is not a Bonner "enthusiast", but a rational human being, I find your premise to be quite amusing. The premise that not making your shots, on a given night, is somehow an indictment on a players ability or character.
Bonner has not been given the opportunities, or consistent enough minutes over a season, to prove himself one way or the other. When/if he does, he'll deserve whatever recognition or condemnation he's earned, and I'll have no problem acknowledging it.
As to your questions:
Was he left open all night long?
Literally, no.
Did he have plenty of open looks that he's been knocking down recently? Yes.
Did he clank all but one of his threes?
Yes.
Didn't Bonner miss a completely open dunk, after a fabulous Duncan pass?
No. He actually dunked on Chandler with that pass. (And would have been an and 1, if his name wasn't Bonner)
The beautiful pass you must be referring to, would be the one authored by Hill in transition, that Bonner rendered null and void.
By the way, you really come off as a real hardass on these here internets.:tu

Manu was 6-17 with 0 assists the other night against a lowly Minnesota team. But a roleplayer can't have a bad shooting game? Really?
