Toros Stop 66ers for Seventh Straight Win

Box Score (http://www.nba.com/dleague/games/boxscore.jsp?gameId=2020800084)

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 26, 2008 – San Antonio Spurs assignee Malik Hairston scored 17 points and Andre Brown added 20 as the Austin Toros defeated the Tulsa 66ers 89-78 on Friday night at the Austin Convention Center.

Austin pushed its season-high win streak to seven games, including five straight at home. With the victory, the Toros improved to 9-3 and continued the team's best start in franchise history.

"This team is really starting to play defense and it showed during the second half," Toros coach Quin Snyder said. "When you miss a lot of easy stuff there can be a lot of carry over to the next half but our guys followed Squeaky's lead and played better in the second."

Hairston, who received a GATORADE Call-Up from the Toros to the San Antonio Spurs on Dec. 22, was assigned to his former team prior to the game against Tulsa.

Leading 51-50 at halftime, the 66ers added to their advantage by coming out of the locker room on a 7-0 run that was capped by a two-point basket from Chris Richard to push the Tulsa lead to 58-50.

Austin would respond by closing out the third quarter on a 15-3 spurt to lead 65-61 at the end of the period. Newly acquired Toros guard Brian Morrison added five points in the third, including a three-point basket.

The Toros led by as many as 14 points in the fourth quarter. Tulsa outrebounded Austin on the offensive glass 19-15 and had the advantage in steals 13-6.

The 66ers were led in scoring by Ronald DuPree and Yemi Ogunoye, who scored 16 points apiece. The 66ers dropped to 3-9 on the season and 0-2 against the Toros.

The Toros play the second game of their weekend doubleheader Saturday night against the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

That is a funky-ass free-throw stance by Hairston.

Hey Chump; I liked Malik's stats for his game back with the Toros... any personal impression you could share with us?

Tonight, Toros get LA who are on the 2nd half of a B2B (lost @ RGV last night). It's the last chance to see the Toros at home until January 10th ...

anyone have a promo code for tickets?

Great pics ChumpThanks.

Hey Chump; I liked Malik's stats for his game back with the Toros... any personal impression you could share with us?He looked good. He's doing the same things he did to get on the Spurs' roster. Early on, he and especially Marcus turned the ball over a lot after they got in trouble trying to run too many one-on-one-or-more plays. They got into a better groove in the second half letting the game come to them a bit more. I think the Spurs signed Malik for his basket-attacking ability most of all; when he sees any daylight between him and the basket he'll make the drive.

Mohamed Abukar looked like he was coming off an injury. Nice shooting stroke, but he's really skinny. They might be thinking about playing him at the three.

The Toros underestimated the 66ers a bit this time around. They were very aggressive out of the gate and Jeremy Kelly is getting more comfortable playing the point. The Toros were getting outhustled and the 66ers were shooting well, so the 66ers led at halftime.

The Toros really clamped down defensively after that, allowing only 10 points in the third. Brian Morrison really provided a spark in his first game. He looked like he has been itching to play since he last got waived, so much that he was a little out of control at times. His stat line dorsn't look incredible, but remember that he score fully one third of the Toros points in the third quarter. If he can build on that, I could see his actually competing for the starting point guard spot.

Squeaky needs to get his hair under control. That's getting ridiculous . . .

I think Morrison will help. He was at times better than Hill in summer league. He's not NBA caliber but he can shoot and run an offense on the D-League level. I'd be surprised if he's not playing big minutes as the starter soon enough.

CD, two questions about Morrison. First, did he play anywhere after the Spurs waived him? And secondly, did the Toros have the rights to him due to the Spurs inviting him to training camp? I know they waived him on Day 1 of camp and my thinking at the time was that they invited him and waived him solely to get him on the Toros. I could be wrong, though . . .

Morrison played five games for Fort Wayne before getting waived but that team is so dependent on Walker Russell, hardly any other point guard is going to get a fair shake there. I think there will be enough defensive attention paid to the Toros' big men and Hairston/Johnson penetrations that Morrison and the two Williams can just sit out at the arc and chuck threes.
