Mutombo is gone. Mourning is loyal to the Heat. What are the chances Smith could be convinced to become a Spur? He's got good all-around skills and is in decent basketball shape..

I think he has already talked about going back to Cleveland. It will be either there or Boston.

There might be a reason why, in a league so short on big men, that Joe Smith remains unsigned as we approach the midway point in the season.

Joe Smith was actually quite a good player before he got injured.

He's not unsigned at all, he's been the starting centre for the Thunder since Collison went out, and before that he was coming off the bench. He's averaging 7/5 for the season.

WTF is wrong with you people? :lol

Joe Smith would be a great addition..tough defender, has a better scoring touch than any of our big men outside of Tim..other teams HAVE to respect his mid-range shot..smart player..

agree with joe smith being smart and having a respectable mid-range jumper. he's just average defender to me. but he may be able to contribute to the spurs cause.

About the best thread I read. I like the way you said. May, be able to contribute.

I also agree about joe smith.different teams need players for different reasons. And he fits our need. He is tougher than our big men(outside of duncan) he dunks the damn ball. And with bonner and thomas combined 4 points and 5 rebounds is pathetic. I'm sure smith can do better

You obviously don't know Joe Smith quite well. His first 2 1/2 seasons in the NBA, his stats were around 17 ppg 7 rpg 1.3apg 1 spg 1.2bpg. After he got traded, lets just forget his stint with the 76ers. He was misused with the Timberwolves playing at SF.

Check your facts 1st. Notable players in the 1995 NBA draft were as followed

Joe Smith (1) Finished second in ROY voting
Antonio McDyess (2)
Jerry Stackhouse (3)
Rasheed Wallace (4)
Kevin Garnett (5)
Damon Stoudamire (7) Rookie of the Year
Kurt Thomas (10)
Brent Barry (15)
Theo Ratliff (18) In case anyone does not know, he is a former all star.
Michael Finley (21)
Greg Ostertag (29)

Was Joe Smith screwed because of the trade to Philly? Yes. Was he better in his rookie year than the rest of these guys? Yes. I don't know what the heck you were spewing but Joe Smith is not a bust.

Joe Smith is pretty good a player but not a spurs-fit player. We need some guy who is capable enough to shoot the 3 on the offensive end, but we don't need him do anything duncan has already been doing. Joe smith is just like Duncan who is more of a Center than a PF. They are both too slow to follow some acute PFs like Dirk and Gasol, so it is always Bonner who takes care of these PFs. And it's not feasible to put both Duncan and Joe on the court at the same time, just as I said they are just the same style of player, although TD is miles better than Joe.

You know that Smith could always be Duncan's backup, right?

+1
His situation is very similar to Andrew Bogut's-- he should not have been a #1 pick, but he was still a better than average player. If he was a Spur, guys like T Park would be in these forums defending him against all criticism, but since he is not, he says he sucks. That's called homerism, plain and simple. Getting Smith would unquestionably be a positive, not a negative.

Joe Smith is better than Oberto and Thomas, but not by much. Pick him up if it's cheap, but I think Cleveland or Boston is more likely.

Brad Miller would be nice, but he would have to be waived or bought out for the Spurs to afford him.

Even though OKC traded Petro to Denver today I still count 7 big men on their team. So they might want to trade one more.
