View Full Version : How Spurs fans overreact to Close Wins and Bad Losses from the Spurs over the years!!

One of my biggest pet peeves I have about Spurs fans..is how they react to close wins against bad teams or bad losses against bad teams.

This will happen in an 82 game season. The season is a grind and the other teams have NBA players and the Spurs are still a benchmark on their schedule.

First of all, I'm not excusing the bad losses or close wins. But I decided to look at the last three seasons to test my theory.

1) 2005-2006 season: 63-19 record and lost in the WCF Semifinals to Dallas 4-3

Close Wins:
1) LA Clippers 95-87 OT on 12/13/05 at home
2) Minnesota 90-88 on 12/15/05
3) Minnesota 83-77 on 1/6/06 at home
4) Memphis 80-79 on 1/14/06 at home
5) Milwaukee 95-92 on 1/18/06 at home
6) Indiana 92-88 on 2/12/06
7) Memphis 83-80 on 2/24/06

Bad Losses:
1) Chicago 99-106 on 11/25/05 at home
2) Atlanta 84-94 on 12/10/05
3) New Orleans 76-89 on 12/18/06 (they were not a good team at that time)
4) Milwaukee 107-109 OT on 12/20/05
5) Philadelphia 100-103 OT on 2/15/06
6) LA Clippers 85-98 on 3/7/06

2) 2006-2007 season: 58-24 record and won the NBA title over Cleveland 4-0

Close Wins:
1) Sacramento 100-98 on 12/2/06 at home
2) Philadelphia 103-98 on 12/16/06 at home
3) Memphis 105-98 on 12/20/05 at home
4) Boston 93-89 on 1/22/07 (they were not a good team at that time)
5) New Orleans/Okla City on 3/28/07 at home

Bad Losses:
1) Charlotte 92-95 OT on 11/15/05 at home
2) Milwaukee 114-107 on 12/26/05 at home
3) Minnesota 103-101 OT on 1/3/07
4) Miami 100-85 on 2/11/07
5) Milwaukee 101-90 on 3/15/07
6) Boston 91-85 on 3/17/07 at home
7) Indiana 99-100 on 4/1/07
8) Memphis 101-91 on 4/16/07

(Also, Cleveland beat the Spurs twice that season as well!!! The first one was the first home game of that season.)

3) 2007-2008 season:56-26 record and lost in WCF Finals to the LA Lakers 4-1

Close Wins:
1) Memphis 104-101 on 10/31/07
2) LA Clippers 99-90 on 12/22/07
3) New York 97-93 on 1/4/08 at home
4) LA Clippers 88-82 on 1/6/08
5) Charlotte 95-86 on 1/21/08
6) Miami 90-89 on 1/24/08
7) New York 99-93 OT on 2/8/08
8) Minnesota 100-99 on 2/21/08
9) Milwaukee 96-94 on 3/1/08
10) LA Clippers 97-88 on 3/26/08

Bad Losses:
1) Sacramento 112-99 on 11/26/07
2) Golden State 84-96 on 12/11/07
3) Memphis 85-88 on 12/19/07 (3 pointer by Rudy Gay at the buzzer!)
4) Toronto 73-83 on 12/28/07 (I know Toronto was a playoff team that season)
5) Seattle 85-88 on 1/29/08

So my point is the close wins and bad losses will happen every season. I'm not excusing them but to overreact and say the Spurs are terrible or won't be contenders is over-the-top. The history and evidence has shown otherwise and until I see different they will get my benefit of the doubt.

I still say that after that Bucks loss the Spurs should take the next 3 seasons and rebuild with all lottery picks. They have no chance for the rest of the decade.

the problem with a few spurs fans here are that they dont just react to the loss. they go ahead and bash the players, the coaches, and the rest of the spurs organization. quite pathetic.

i have no problem with reacting to the loss, but are you spurs fan or not?

I'm a huge Spurs fan.

I just want some perspective...that's all!! :lol

Again, you can honestly debate whether they will win a championship this year with this roster.

But when I go back and look at the history and see how consistent they have been....there has to be some perspective. Until I see the Spurs miss the playoffs or their record drop-off significantly...i have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

They have earned that with three championships in the last six years and are still playing good basketball!!

We had less close wins and more bad losses with our championship year.

We lost against Milwaukee two times in our championship year.

I think history could speak for itself again.

thoughtful analysis takes too much time and effort - much easier to just say "so and so sucks" or "let's trade player a for b." It almost seems that some people take more pleasure in saying "I told you so" when a player struggles rather than supporting that player when they succeed - I guess winning is boring and losing is more fun.

Underdawg...you have spoken the truth!!

Sports fans say they want their team to win. But if you win too much (like the Spurs or New England Patriots or Pete Sampras.....etc) then you are boring.

Isn't it about winning the championship and having a team that gives you a chance each and every year?

I believe so...unfortunately sports fans and media are more interested in the entertainment of sports than winning franchises.

But that is a separate thread all by itself!!!

forreal im getting irritated with all these trade Parker/Manu/Tim threads. Havent people ever heard of off-games. If they mess up one game, it's a trade player time thread.

Im also a big fan of the Arizona Cardinals so I dont get fazed by losses...specially close national televised losses (monday night football vs bears)

The argument cuts both ways. If you're annoyed at fans overreacting at losses, then you should climb up on your high horse when fans go crazy after a win.

Or, you should perhaps take Pop's advice and get over yourself. Fans get emotional about their favorite teams, so what?

I've never seen a trade Tim thread. :lol

Yup always have and always will. Thats Sports in any world. Look across the big Drinks and you'll see how some fans act in their own stadiums. They'll start riots and kill each other over a bad ref call. A few words typed is nothing compared to many other Sport fans all over the world.

Youre right...the argument does cuts both ways.

However, the problem I have is saying the team is terrible and they won't make it after a bad loss or a close win....is silly and over the top when the history and evidence don't show that.

I'm okay with emotion for your team...but let's have reason and perspective as well.

I'd say just relax and let it be. With the exception of the trolls, I take it for granted that folks on here are all Spurs fans.

Chasing down some perfect PC version of what it means to be a fan seems like a dead end.

The crazy posts and the reasoned and perspective posts aren't going away.

I'm not looking for some PC version to be a fan. But it's easy...to say a team sucks and they are terrible after a bad loss or a close win or that they want to trade Tony or Manu after every game.

I believe there should be balance and perspective and a forum should have a good, solid debate as well.

Just as in everything...when you have too much of one side you need the other side to offset it.
