I have a very reliable inside source confirming that he will be in the shoot out. Believe me or not just wanted to share this with y'all.

*also if the contestants have already been named I'm sorry and I feel like an idiot

So you have a source that tells you he is in...but you are already apologizing for being potentially wrong?

Thought he meant that if the names for contestants were already named (that do include Mason) than he is apologizing for breaking what he thought was news to us.

I hope it's not true...

Mason needs to continue to be underrated and ignored by the league. Guys like Kapono and Q-Rich just fell off after their "coming out parties" at the three-point shootout.

I hope Mason isn't invited.

Ma$on's professional bballer story is a Cinderella one, in the last 2 months, from a no-stats nobody on a lottery team to a starter on a top team, a top 3G shooter, and now maybe in the All-Star 3G shootout.

I'm sure lots of NBA wannabe's in the D-league and elsewhere are encouraged.

Yup....

Sometimes it takes the right team at the right time!!

I'm happy for him. He has done everything and more that the Spurs have ask and expected of him.

I'm calling it right now, Mason will WIN the 3pt shootout - he is a brilliant set-foot shooter with a mega-quick release, so the contest will suit him perfectly.

I hope I get a Spur for this if I'm right! :lol

I have mixed feelings on whether or not he would do well. He is a catch and shoot/off screen shooter. His shot is pretty flat too. Usually its the shooters with the textbook form and nice high arcing shot that do well.

I really hope Bonner gets invited too. I think his shooting stroke is simplicity itself w/c makes it ideal for the contest. ABut primarily I'm curious to see how he'd handle the pressure.

He shot-puts it, but why not have him in there since he's making so many of them and he's a crowd favourite kinda guy.

We have a roster filled with 3 point shooters. Roger is just about the best in the league right now. Why not take 1 of our many and let him play in Phoenix. Someone on this roster deserves to be at the 3 point shoot out. And on the other side, there shouldnt be anyone complaining about us not having anyone on the Slam Dunk contest as well.

It hasn't been announced that Mason will be invited but he has publicly said that he wants in. And seeing how he is near the top of the 3P% leaders, I'm guessing the NBA has to give him a spot.

Although I remember either last season or the season before Barry said he wanted in and was leading the league in 3P% and the NBA skipped over him.

Yeah, the Spurs have had a player in the top two or three in percentage more than once who has not gotten an invite.

Q-Rich fell off because he's a mediocre offensive player unless D'antoni is coach. He was also traded to the Knicks when Isiah was GM, name a player during that era who went to the Knicks and didn't fall off. Kapono is shooting 43.8% from long distance this season and his scoring average is up from last year, most wouldn't consider that "falling off".

If this story is true it won't hurt Mason at all.

Mason would definitely have a great chance to win this competition. He is the most fearless shooter I have seen in a while, and he is ultra-competitive.

Bonner, I don't think should compete. He will probably look for Pop after his first miss.

DUNCANownsKOBE2
01-05-2009, 10:23 AM
Bonner would actually have a better chance at winning it but Mason deserves it more. His shot is ugly as hell but it's a quick release and requires very little lower body strength, and the 3PT contest always favors those shots.

Spurs almost always have somebody near the top in 3Pt%, and yet always seem to get the pass when it comes to the Three Point Contest. I always wanted to see Barry take his shot at the double crown.

Maybe Mason's 'breakout season' story, along with some hot shooting, is enough to get him a trip this year.

What if one day they change the rules for the 3pt shootout to give shooters the option of picking the ball off the rack or receiving a pass. I think Mason would benefit from this rule.

Maybe Mason's 'breakout season' story, along with some hot shooting, is enough to get him a trip this year.

Barry was in the 3point point shootout after winning the dunk contest...it was when he was with the Sonics, probably 2002 or so...probably the year he lead the NBA in 3 shooting.

I think it was the one Peja won...and I think he went out in the second round.

It was funny because he was pretty hot in the first round and most of the second and he hit a bunch in a row and then jumped up and started making whooping noises...then he missed a bunch and lost.

The guy who has gotten jobbed on this is Bruce Bowen. He's a former 3 point champ and he's been right at or over 40% on 3's for like 5 or 6 years running and he's never gotten the invite.

I think Bruce would do well in it...he would flat out own the corners.

Agreed. To have that kind of % over that time period shows how consistent he has been. And you are right in that he would own the corners but unfortunately I think he would have trouble at the other spots.

All he needed were 70,000+ more Chinese to vote for him and he would have been in the ASG and starting! Maybe TD is right and he gets in next year after he makes another trip over in the summer. :p:

Just a hunch, but I'd think in a contest like this, Bonner would do a little better than Mase.

Mase is a rhythm shooter while Bonner has more of a set shot.

I'm probably one of the few to agree with you. Bonner's not a classic jumpshooter and will expend relatively less energy. He puts a higher arc on his shot than Mason as well.

That's awesome!!! Now I have a real reason to watch the shootout. It would've been cool too if Bonner would have made it. One thing I never understood though was why Brent Barry and Bruce Bowen never went those years before when they were tops. Oh well, I'm gonna go ahead and predict that Mason will win the shootout. Go Spurs Go!!!!
