View Full Version : Thoughts on our beloved Mavs tonight

Annoying loss. Very annoying in fact. The Grizzlies were knocking on the door against good teams with close losses to the Suns, Spurs, Hornets, and Lakers and today they blew the door wide open. I feared it would happen, especially with the Mavs' play in the last few games and indeed it did.
Hard to pin the loss on anyone in particular, especially when its by 20 points. Dirk had 28 points but most of it came in the first half but it was just exchanigng baskets at that point. Kidd sucked on offense w/ only 1 point, J-Ho left no imprint on the game except for a brief 5 minute stretch in the 3rd.
What can I say, we're mediocre and this happens to mediocre teams. Duds here and there (nets game, grizzlies game), poor record against +.500 teams (5-9), and mediocrity even in wins (Clippers, Thunder, Timberwolves, Knicks, etc).
So we can't really say the Mavs are underachieving, we can't be upset with the players because they're playing up to their talent levels. WE can be upset with the front office for allowing for this roster to become so mediocre though. I guess.
And the difference between mediocrity and eliteness is not the fact that J-Ho has mentally quit on the franchise.

Rebounds story of the game. Mavs couldn't get one timely rebound.
Dirk was shit after halftime. Terry and Kidd didn't do anything.
JHo isn't even good for first quarter points anymore and just parks his ass on the perimeter for jumpers. That fucktard got some of you excited about that Clippers game.

Is this even necessary? This bullshit overreaction to a single game? Ring us up the next time a team goes 82-0 in the regular season, your flawless Spurs included.

The Spurs have only been slightly better than the Mavs thus far. Both teams have had cushy schedules and haven't capitalized. Reality may hit both teams like a motherfucker when the schedules toughen up. Mavs 10 of 14 on road after these next 2 cupcakes. Spurs schedule looks excruciating in Feb/March.
Yeah Yeah Spurs have 4 rings, I'm just talking about the 08-09 edition of both teams.

To be fair, the Spurs had legit injuries to their best players. For the Mavs, JHo's injury was actually a net positive.

The Spurs players have gotten healthy but their brand of basketball has still been pretty mediocre. They're not as good as their record, the Mavs record is right around where it should be though.
If I didn't say already, this 10 of 14 road game stretch is gonna make or break the season IMO. If we go through this playing .500 basketball we're basically done.
Not to confident about that statement at TD are you, ghazi? :)

Not really.... You know JHo can play better when he gets his head out of his ass. We've seen Dirk play better. Kidd can definitely score more than 1 point in his current shape.
I'll refrain from talking about the Spurs, considering this is a Mavs thread.

About the Spurs' record:
- They have the 2nd best road record in the West (9-5) behind the Lakers
- When they were injured, they lost several winnable games at home (Phoenix, Dallas, Denver, Miami). They went on to beat 3 of these 4 on the road after they got healthy.
- Both Milwaukee Bucks games are out of the way
The winning % of the Spurs' opponents does get better going forward, but the whole "they are not as good as their record" thing is a hasty proclamation. I'm pretty confident they'll win their fair share of road games against +.500 teams and continue to be in the top 3 in the conference

JHo's head will never be out of his ass. I'm fucking tired of waiting around to see a 48 minute effort from him.
He's not the only problem, but they can only get rid of one problem at a time.

I'm speaking from a margin of victory standpoint. Some people don't take that stat seriously but I'm of the opinion that it's relevant. Spurs margin of victory is 3.3 which isn't that great.

I mean we don't have a championship/elite roster, our roster is fairly mediocre... and as a result, we're getting mediocre results.

I think the Spurs can improve (especially defensively) but historically they have done so around February (RRT). That said, I think their record is about where it should be.

Mavs 06 talent level >>>>> Mavs 09 talent level
How the FO let this team come down to this I don't know, why oh why did we trade Devin?
And I have been really supportive of Carlisle but today he was throwing some shit lineups out there. Especially the one where Singleton and Bass were our 2 bigs. Memphis might not be good at a lot of things, but one thing they are good at, and have been for a few seasons, is rebounding. They have a lot of long, athletic players. And Carlisle allowed them to own us at the glass at the end of the 3rd when they blew open the game. I understand that Dirk and Damp can't play 48 mins, but you have to try to keep one of them in the game. And while Diop isn't playing great, he can protect the board better than singleton can agianst Gasol and Warrick and co.
And at this point he has to try to give some minutes to Wright and Green. Those guys have some talent, they can get to the basket, George isn't giving the team anything. He is just a body out there, who wanders around. We already have JHo doing that. We don't need two.
And Kidd... he has some great moments like against Minny and everyone thinks he is not finished. Hint: when great games are more and more of a rarity, that's not a sign of still being able to do it, that's a sign of losing it. The man is nothing more than a shadow of himself. He should just retire after this season.

I don't lose much sleep over the Devin trade to be honest. If we were to win 58 games this year and make the WCF Finals and lose in 6 games to the Lakers with Kidd having a poor showing, then I would think that Devin Harris = championship.
That doesn't look liek the case at all though. We wouldn't be MUCH better if Devin was still here and the difference between us and the elite teams is MUCH right now.

Barea in the game at the same time as Kidd kills Kidds value bc Barea has the ball in his hands everytime up the court. Kidd is being regulated to a defensive specialist in these situations.. Some JJB is good, too much JJB is bad

Isn't it kind of sad for Stack personally? I understand why the Mavs don't want to play him anymore and hope to get something useful for a team looking to dump salary, but everytime I see Stack now, I hear the Arrested Development Charlie Brown music.

They could at least throw him in the Singleton/Green/Williams/Wright rotation as a guy who will either get 35 minutes or he'll DNP-CD, with no middle ground whatsoever.

Wes Anderson's next movie will be loosely based on Jerry Stackhouse. Owen Wilson will don blackface to portray Jerious Bricktower, an aging former NBA Star going through a midlife crisis as the 11th man on the bench for the Memphis Grizzlies. Natalie Portman will play his love interest as he looks to resolve his past while moving forward to the future...With Bill Murray playing the George Karl Grizzled Coach

I'm also working on a science fiction screenplay about the 1987-88 Seattle SuperSonics, sort of a cross between the Matrix and The Big Lebowski. Dale Ellis and Xavier McDaniel stumble into another dimension and the future of the universe hinges on the outcome of the 1987 Western Conference Finals.

It would suck to see Josh start turning in 25-7-7 lines for his new team, cause that's totally going to happen with his Vince Carter routine, but it's not going to happen here. Move him for a piece that would actually contribute. Plus his contract runs well past 2010 if I'm not mistaken.

It's absolutely disinterest. That Clippers game proved that without a doubt. If they played the Clippers tomorrow with Dirk in the lineup, they'd probably get smoked and Josh would play like ass.

JHo could not put up that line consistently. 25/9/7? That's Lebronesque. He obviously doesn't give a shit right now, but at his best, he's not even worth it b/c he's still a dumbass down the stretch.
Ghazi

I don't even care about JHo's disinterest anymore to be honest. It pisses me off, and I want his ass shipped out but what you do... even if he was interested, we wouldn't be an elite team.
And Carlisle's managing of the roster doesn't bother me at all... even if Wright and Green were getting more burn, we wouldn't be an elite team.
Artest sucks, mono. He would not have been the difference between our current state of mediocrity and contender status either. Look how that's panned our for the Rockets.
And I don't know if I would even get that excited about G-Force. I doubt gerald is the gap between mediocrity and contender status.
Dirk is a great player but Kobe/Duncan/Lebron are better + 3 years ago Dwight and Paul weren't nearly as good as they are now. What offset this is that we had a deep bench so Dirk could win a series even without being thebest player in teh series, as was the case v the Spurs.
Now, for us to win a championship, we'd have to expect Dirk to outduel the likes of Kobe and Lebron (whose rosters are tenfold better than they were 3 years ago) or Duncan/Paul in a series... and even then it may not be enough because those teams have superior depth and superior core players (that Josh Howard is a part of our core makes us unimpressive as hell). *sigh*
Sad days in Mavs land folks, sad sad days.
Kidd's 1 point statline pisses me off too. I dislike how a PG like CP3 (not that I expect Kidd to play at that level) can have a bad game where he gets 16/8 but Kidd's bad games are 2-4 points.
I won't dwell on it too much I guess. Might just have to accept that we're on the decline, not accepting it just makes the final outcome more painful.
Maybe I'm being overly dramatic :(:(
