Lets start some Texas State threads. Why not? I think Utsa and Texas State will be rivals on the field for awhile. This just doesnt have to be Utsa all the time. Im all for a lil rivalry going on. A nice rivalry, not talking about people mothers and crap. OU and UT seem to have a good respectful one going on.

What do you have against San Marcos?

I have never heard anyone say a bad thing about San Marcos before reading this messageboard. It doesn't smell like parts of Lubbock, or have a maximum security prison like Huntsville or just plain suck like Waco.

San Marcos is a perfect "college town". It is built into the fabric of the community rather than just being there (something that is different from UTSA or U Houston).

It is safe enough that students and residents can walk or bike anywhere around campus and town without being hassled by vagrants or dealing with shady neighborhoods.

Entertainment- As a student, there were times that I went into Austin or San Antonio for something to do, but for the most part I was happy staying in San Marcos. Give me a pool hall, beer joint, and a park / river and I am perfectly content. I don't need a techno club, valet parking, or fusion cuisine to be "living the life"

I have serious doubts about our basketball team. Any team that puts the opposition on the line 35+ times per game is going to loss more times than not. I do not like Coach Davalos's style of play, but that is what he wants to do.

We tend to play to our competition and always seem ready for the Runners.

I am looking forward to visiting 'the birdcage' this year.

it's funny how tx state people think they can go to the fbs and compete. Utsa won the commisioner cup last year without football. Tx state has had the worst mens basketball for the past 5 years. Our baseball is a push. Both good. Our track has dominated for the past couple of years. Their football team has had 2 good years I'm the past 10 of you can call this year good. That qb transfer from u of is the only reason they made a run bout 4 years ago. I just think overall utsa athletics are more competitive. Our basketball teams are 4-0 I believe against conference USA

The Commish Cup could be seen as a barometer for your athletic program. Too be fair, we don't get points for Men's tennis. These two sports are equal in the eyes of the Commish cup.

Funny how you base things on the commish cup-

Since 2000-
2000: SWT wins
2001: can't find stats online
2002: SWT wins
2003: 2nd
2004: TXST wins
2005: 2nd
2006: 3rd
2007: 4th
2008: 3rd (4 points behind UTSA)
2009: Currently in first (through 5 sports)

Men's all sports cup-
2003: 2nd place
2004: 2nd place
2005: 7th
2006: 8th
2007: 8th
2008: can't find online
2009: 2nd (through football, cross country)

Women's cup -
2003: 1st
2004: 1st
2005: 1st
2006: 1st
2007: 1st
2008: 1st
2009: 1st (through soccer, volleyball, cross country)

For those of you who do not follow SLC or understand how the commish cup works-
There are 12 teams in the conference. The Conference champ gets 12 points, second place gets 11 all the way down the line. If your school does not compete in a specific sport then you get no points, but there are still 12 possible points (UTSA for football, TXST for Men's tennis).

In 2008, UTSA finished with 11 points in Men's tennis (TXST = 0), TXST had 3 points for football (UTSA = 0)

Yup, I guess that's right.

You whip Texas State in accepting students -- 93% Acceptance Rate
Texas State? - 53%

According to US News and World both schools are Masters Universities.Texas State is Tier 1 while UTSA is tier 3. -- 3 is more than 1 so that must make UTSA better. Right?

Retention rates?
Texas State - 74% of FT Students / 63% of PT Students
UTSA - 59% / 46
It looks like students prefer rolling hills to the Concrete Campus

Graduation Rates?
Texas State- 22% graduate in 4 years, 47% in 5, and 55% in 6 years.
UTSA - 7% graduate in 4 years, 22% in 5, and 30 % in 6 years.
Yikes... Did you say something about ALUMNI?

National Accreditation?
TxSt - 8
UTSA - 3

(UT has 10, A&M has 6)

Crime on Campus?
Liquor law violations on campus- 361 to 278 (winner UTSA)
Liquor in the Dorms - 311 to 78 (winner UTSA)
Robbery - 2 to 0 (winner UTSA)
Motor Vehicle Theft - 24 to 1 (UTSA)

All of this information came from -
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, US News and World Report, and the National Center for Educational Statistics.

great post, but to be fair you guys in San Marcos have had what...an 80 year head start?

Is it also fair to state that Tx St has become stagnate over the last decade, where UTSA has been growing by leaps and bounds (and I dont just mean student population).

I got into all of the schoolsI applied to (tx state and UT austin included) and chose UTSA. I think it still depends on what your looking for.

That being said go roadrunners, here's to beatung tx state whenever we are head to head and here's to becoming a teir 3 national university and leaving the 'masters' designation behind!

Peligro,

1. We may have an 80 year head start as an institution, but our mission statement was completely different prior to the 1960s. We were primarily a teachers college, not the comprehensive University we are today.

2. Stagnation, In what sense?

You mention student population, we are the 5th largest university in the state behind UT, A&M, UNT, and U of Houston at just over 29,000 students. Last year Texas State was the 3rd most popular choice for incoming freshmen (by total number of applications received). Unlike UTSA, we are experiencing controlled growth. As it currently stands, the community infrastructure of San Marcos cannot support more than roughly 33,000 students. City officials are working on ways to improve this, but for now we are controlling our growth by tightening our enrollment standards, and moving classes away from San Marcos to Round Rock, Austin, and San Antonio. On one hand it keeps us from becoming a larger institution, but it also allows us to be more selective on the students we accept.

Academically our standards are higher than ever before. We continue add new graduate and PhD programs every year; Several of our programs (geography, history, creative writing, nursing, forensic anthropology, and nanotechnology... the ones I can quickly think of off hand) have received accolades from their respective fields in the past decade.

Athletically? I stated this earlier. 3 Commish Cups in 8 years. While our Men's programs struggle, we have won the All Women's Cup 9 of the last 10 times. Since I arrived here in 2004, I have seen us win numerous conference championships; athletic facility improvements undertaken (soccer complex, baseball / softball stadium, video boards for basketball / volleyball, baseball, softball, and football stadium improvements); and a push to move out of the Southland Conference

Physical Growth? Anyone who went to Southwest will tell you that this is not their school, and they are right. We are 5 years into our current master plan which has added several new buildings; campus improvements including Concho Green, sculptures, fountains, and increased signage; and we have created a new campus in Round Rock.

Stagnation is far from the word I would use to describe Texas State.

I can tell you why I did..............I actually could have gone to UT. I was in the top tier of my class. But, I chose Utsa because I had a great job at the time......that Im actually in as a career now. I was in design/architecture, and San Antonio has great architecture in and around the city. At the time the classes were smaller at Utsa compared to UT (still are) and the junior/senior year architecture and design studios were held at the downtown campus. The department regularly took walking field trips to the historic hotels and buildings downtown and these field trips coincided with our design projects. So, in a nutshell, the school of design and architecture suited me more at Utsa.

:p:

Although everything I have stated appears to be to the contrary, I agree that both are good schools. According to the THECB, UTSA has more and produces more PhDs than Texas State. That is one area that we are quickly trying to improve upon.
Also, as part of the UT System you are eligible for PUF funding to help with campus improvements, and your System status helps in obtaining research dollars. You are also far enough from Austin that you can develop programs that we may not be able to due to our proximity to UT.

If I understand this correctly, conference originally started out as academic conferences for like minded institutions. Intercollegiate athletics just grew out of this. If that is the case UTSA and UTA are not the problem, it is SFA and the Louisiana schools.

We talk about this all the time on the Bobcat messageboard. If/When we move to an FBS conference, I would not mind seeing UTSA or UTA in that same conference.

" Oh, look at me I went to UT Austin, I am better than everyone else" yeah fucking right. Keep thinking that you fuck up. It is really actually quite hilarious. Like I said I am going to kick back and watch at UTSA's freakish growth in all areas in the next 7-8 years. Just watch and learn.

Will UTSA's acceptance rate grow?

Actually its quite the opposite........they are going to be more selective. You have to if you want to become Tier 1.......which is what they are striving to do. :toast

I am so glad there are some actual intelligent peeps on this damn site. It get's plain out boring unless I see these guys in person and we have a face to face discussion. Which will probably and most likely lead to blows which these dumb fucks are def not worth the trouble. Ignoring it from now.

Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off.

Your degree from UTSA has about the same texture, consistency, and worth as one sheet of Charmin. And I am better than you.

Peligro,

3. If you don't mind me asking, why made you decide to go to UTSA? (general curiosity, no malicious intent)

Also just to be clear I am on the "lets all get along with a healthy rivalry" bus.

I work with a few Texas State grads who constantly dog their alma mater's academic and athletic programs. They alwasy bitch about how the leadership has no vision and that they are losing time while UTSA is growing. But that being said it is just their opinion I guess. UTSA has plenty of their own apathetic alum.

I chose UTSA becaus eI am from Austin hence my parents are from Austin and I wanted to get away from home. I wasn't sure what to expect, but at the end of the day I rolled out of there in 3 years with a degree in accounting in 2004.

I think TSU has some fantastic programs, but as much as UTSA gets the 'UT' credit, I think that TSU gets overshadowed bu UT as well. I know you guys see plenty of longhorn gear on campus in San Marcos, just something both schools need to fight through.

UTSA football should help cure that for BOTH schools. So as I started lets hope for a great rivalry both academically and athletically. We will all be better off for it.

And for the smack talkers keep it coming from both sides, let's get the rivalry started.
