Dude is tearing up the CBA. No matter how you slice it. CBA is better or equal to College Ball and Bonzi is racking up the pts. He'd still be a great player to be added to any team for energy and points.

I'm sure many of you have heard by now that Bonzi Wells has taken his talents to China this year for the princely sum of 80,000 dollars. This is a guy that turned down a 36 million dollar contract 3 years ago. THIRTY SIX MILLION DOLLARS. And slowly but surely, this is turning just as funny as you might imagine. A look at Bonzi's exploits thus far:
December 12th: Bonzi Wells lands in China

Joins Shanxi Zhongyu, which finished last in an 18 team league last season.
At the time of his arrival, they're 7-5, good for 9th in the league.

For starters, the appropriate way to refer to Bonzi in China seems to be "His Majesty" and not "LOL That Guy Turned Down 36 Million Dollars ROFLMAO." Second and more importantly, Bonzi Wells has single-handedly carried a mediocre, 7-5 team to an utterly dominant 9-7 mark. Seriously, how did we let this gem of a player get away from us?

I’m not making this up. After wondering about Bonzi Wells’ whereabouts a couple weeks back (http://dimemag.com/2008/12/where-are-you-bonzi-wells/), it turns out Wells landed in China and is making noise in the Chinese Basketball Association, the nation’s top league. Dropping 52 points, hauling in 14 rebounds and dishing out five assists on Sunday for Shanxi Zhongyu, Wells put on a show in his home debut and fourth game overall.

“The coach is giving me a lot of space, in the NBA I was never able to play so freely,” Wells, 32, said after Sunday’s game through a Chinese translator. “Since college until now, it has been a long time since I’ve been able to play this freely.”

That coach is former Sonics coach Bob Weiss, and it appears he has been talking with Mike D’Antoni. One move he made was to have Wells play the point guard position, which has paid off. Since joining the team, Wells has averaged a league-leading 46.8 points a game.

BONZI WELLS AT PRACTICE IN CHINA
Former NBA basketball player Bonzi Wells recently signed with Shanxi of the Chinese Basketball Association. In his first two games in China Wells is averaging 50.0 points per game. He scored 48 in his Chinese League debut (http://www.interbasket.net/news/579/2008/12/22/bonzi-wells-makes-china-debut-with-48-points-11-rebounds-7-steals/) and added 52 in his next game. Wells had to shoot the ball 37 times to get his 48 points (including jacking 15 three-point attempts.) He replaced former Atlanta Hawks forward Donta Smith on the Shanxi roster who scored a mere 41 points in his final game before he was cut in favor of Wells.

There are at least 13 former NBA players on professional basketball teams in China including Olumide Oyedeji, Chris Porter, Awvee Storey, Kirk Snyder, David Harrison, Rodney White, Donnell Harvey, Amal McCaskill, Dontae’ Jones, Priest Lauderdale and native Chinese players Mengke Bateer and Wang Zhi Zhi.

That’s a fairly impressive crew of NBA castoffs and has beens. Porter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Porter_%28basketball%29)was a college star and SI coverboy at Auburn before becoming a drug addict. Harrison was suspended by the NBA for being a dope smoker. He then went on the radio and claimed (http://www.indycornrows.com/story/2008/1/24/213142/845) marijuana prevents lung cancer. White was one of the league’s all-time lottery busts after being selected 9th overall by the Detroit Pistons in the 2001 NBA draft.

Storey is the quintessential journeyman and Lauderdale was one of the fattest players in NBA history. He was released by the Denver Nuggets for poor conditioning. Lauderdale was once caught eating donuts while riding the exercise bike in the Nuggets weight room.

Lauderdale’s exit from the NBA wasn’t nearly as spectacular as that of Dontae’ Jones, though. Jones had his career derailed after he was arrested for his involvement in the shooting (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=980DE4DB1538F931A25755C0A96F9582 60)of SEVEN people in 1999.

Oyedeji meanwhile has come the closest of any human of literally being a failed basketball player in every continent on Earth. A native of Africa, Oyedeji failed in North America (with the Seattle Sonics and Orlando Magic), Europe (Germany and Greece), Australia (the 2006 Commonwealth games), and Asia (Korea.) Had he simply signed to play a year in South America rather than the season he spent playing professionally in Puerto Rico, Oyedeji would have pulled off the global hat trick of sucking. Still, failing on five contintents is a rather impressive feat and is probably unparalleled in basketball history.

So, congrats to Olumide Oyedeji for sucking of five continents. Unless Antarctica gets an expansion team, that’s an achievement that likely won’t be topped.
