godaddy.com says my website is using too much bandwidth. i don't have many photos and graphics but the few i do have on there are fairly large

As of 1/7/2009, your hosting account has accumulated 1,147.04 MB of data transfer. This means that the allowed 1000 MB of monthly data transfer has been exceeded by 147.04 MB.

any suggestions? :depressed

You can usually get a report that shows what IP addresses are driving your traffic. There might be some lamer out there pounding your site just so it's unaccessible or so you'll have to pay overage fees.

You also may want to look for a hosting service with more generous bandwidth allowances.

You can figure out how much data transfer you will require by estimating your average page size and multiplying it by the number of page views you expect to have in a month. For example with an average page size of 50 KB, and around 2000 page views per day, you will transfer an average of 3 GB per month.

Compress your photos and lower the resolutions. If you are hosting bitmaps, convert them to jpegs and reupload them...

+1

Assuming like someone theorized that you're not being attacked by a lot of extra traffic.

There are a lot of things you can do, but my biggest question would be:

How long did it take you to go over your monthly bandwidth allowance?

Also, how much do you pay monthly, 1GB of transfer a month isn't a whole lot, I hope you aren't paying too much for it.

The guys I used to use charge 2.00 a month for 75MB space and 3GB bandwidth monthly, or 400MB space 10GB bandwidth for 5.00 monthly.

How much bandwidth you need/using right now? I can probably hook you up on the cheap to host on my server. Its very reliable through hostgator or gatorhosting been using them for serveal years now 0 down time.

Best idea I've read all year.
