They're in a rough spot right now:
luckily for them January play won't mean much compared to how teams are playing heading into the post-season.

Exactly, just as Detroit exposed the Lakers when they beat us earlier. We recovered, Boston will. However, they won't have HCA in the east, and will suffer yet another ECF finals loss. Don't let that 17-3 finals record mislead you, they are 20-11 in the ECF finals; losing many times with NBA best record, or at least best record in the east. The Celtic mysitique is easy to debunk if you look further. It all hinges on the Russell era. Everyone who played then is either dead or eligible to collect social security.

I give LA credit for putting the Celtics in their place and knocking them down off cloud 9 but some Lakers fans just need to shut the fuck up. It wasn't all them. The C's bench comes to mind. Posey, etc..

I don't think the Lakers loss really did much.

I think the Celtics have some seriously tired legs after the fast start. And, the long post-season last year and the fast start this year gave them a false sense of invincibility. Everything from tired legs to overconfidence to teams playing their best against them to a lack of a bench is all collectively adding up right now.

Not saying the Lakers loss didn't do anything. But, doubtful a mental check would last this long, especially with some of their losses to bad teams.

No one or team can stay hot throughout the whole season, I mean there is disticntly a period of time for those teams to suck. Celtics have lost some unthinkable games recently though, they are still clearly the best team in the league. Mavs are the seacond best next to celtics.

Again, Lakers fans with their revisionist history of last year's WCF. It was close series even though it ended in 5 games. So it wasn't a destruction..be realistic!!

Also, the Spurs stopped the Lakers in 2003 and won a championship.

The Spurs-Lakers have been a good rivalry in the 2000's and I'm looking for them to get at again in this year's WCF.

They didn't destroy the Spurs...even if it was 5 games. There were three games played within 8 points or less and each team had a blowout each in the other two games in the series...that's a wash!!

Total destruction of one team over another team would be a sweep or one team beating another team by double-digits in each game of the series.

That's exactly right.

No one can go to the final boxscore and say Lakers won by blowout games.
Destroying a team would constitute beating them by double digits and not letting that certain team even close throughout the games.

Lakers blew the Spurs once and the Spurs came back the next game to repay them with the same treatment.

The Celtics slump and the loss to the Lakers on X-Mas day are two unrelated events. A slump does not last 8 games.

Regarding SPurs/Lakers, the Lakers were clearly better team but it was not domination by any means. A competitive series with each team having a blowout win but the Lakers were slightly better in the other 3 games. It was more competitive than the Celtics/Hawks series that went to 7... Celtics won all 4 of their games by 20+ points I believe.

Yes they did. Lakers did that against the Celtics as well. It probably cost both teams their chance in those series.

The Celtics are not in a slump... I keep telling people this. This team was overrated to begin with. Teams bought into their hype. KG is the only decent defender they have and yet they gained a reputation for being a great defensive team. My ASS!!! Teams just failed to take it to them... period. The Lakers defeated the Celtics Myth... and thats all it was, and now evey team in the league is joining in for the beatdown, thanks to the Lakeshow.

If the Celtics were so great, why would Jerry Buss call them out on opening day. No owner does that for fear of looking like a fool.. (see Cuban) but Buss knew that team was overrated and now you guys finally see and believe that you can beat the Celtics because the LAKERS showed you the way.

So did the Pacers and Nuggets earlier in the season.

Furthermore, if the Celtics aren't a great defensive team, who the hell is this year? They're still 1st in defensive efficiency.

They can't defend the fact that the Lakers have owned them since their introduction to the NBA so they bring up some silly argument that the Lakers haven't won since 2002 (disregarding the fact that they've managed to make the Finals twice in that era, both times destroying the Spurs en route).

First of all, you didn't read my post. I wrote since the 2000's the Spurs and Lakers have a rivalry.

The Lakers have won three championships this decade and The Spurs have won three championships this decade. Hmmm....but don't let facts get in the way of a good purple-and-gold colored story!

Second, I don't mind having a debate with Lakers fans. I enjoyed it....but let's have a honest, spirited debate. I will challenge the Laker fans who keep putting their revisionist history on last year's WCF. Most of the people understood my earlier posts saying it was a close series...even though it lasted 5 games. It was due to the closeness of the scores and how tight the games were played.

But, I haven't call any Lakers fans names or cursed at them because they disagreed with my opinion. I have posted exchanges with DrHouse, Lakaluva, and other Lakers fans posters on ST and it's been fun and spirited. We haven't call each other names or curse at each other all.

I am one of those guys who puts the millenium at January 1, 2001. Regardless of how other people mark it, I think most are in agreement that the 1999-2000 season belongs in the previous decade.

So, here are my stats for the fight for team of this decade:

Edges to Spurs:
3 titles to 2
Better regular season record.
Made playoffs every year (Lakers missed one)

Edges to Lakers:
4 finals appearances
4-1 Head-to-head playoff mark.

I didn't factor in divison titles because I am too lazy to look them up.

Decade isn't over and a decision now who is ahead is impossible. This debate would lead to 10 ridiculous pages of trash talk on SpursTalk.

Not to be decided until the 2009-10 season concludes! It's between the Lakers and Spurs for the title of team of the decade, but if Detroit can win a back-to-back, they jump into the discussion.

Apologies my friend. Yes you can say that the Lakers and Spurs have had a rivalry since 2000, but looking at the head to head games that count most, the Lakers have won that rivalry, just as the Celtics have won the rivalry over the Lakers. Head to head, they own us. Its hard to accept, but the facts are there, just as the facts are there between the Spurs and Lakers.

The Spurs are a very good team, but in just a few days you will see first hand why the Lakers think they have the best team in the NBA. Both teams always get up for each other and it should be a good game. Good luck.:toast

Thanks, Lakaluva!

I don't believe you wrote that post I was responding to earlier.

I will agree that the Lakers and Celtics are the platinum standard for NBA Franchises. But, the Spurs have reached the gold standard since what has happened in the last 10 years.

Also, rivalry doesn't happen until both teams beat each other. (For example, I never felt the Yankees-Red Sox was a rivalry until Boston finally beat the Yankees in the playoffs and won a couple of World Series!!) The Spurs have done that against the Lakers. Yes, I know the Lakers have beaten the Spurs more....but the Spurs have drawn blood and the Lakers know they are there.

I'm looking forward to round 1 on Jan 14th and I know ST will blow-up depending on which team wins....especially the Spurs.
