Anybody been to Tokyo?

I'm going in May, Any tips on things to do?
Places to see?
Should I wear my Canadian shirt so the Yakuza won't rape me?

I hope I run into Scarlett Johanson at a time in which she is questioning her current relationship choices and then turns to me for comfort.

:lol I stayed one night in Yokohama (nearby), and wondered why all of the food looked so weird. A restaurant will actually have a little mock-up of food that they serve, like a dessert cart, but not desserts, displayed in their window. Anyway, I had been to Okinawa prefecture probably 3 years earlier, and none of this food looked the same. There was also a raucas party going on a few blocks away. Anyway, we had some yummy noodle soup with slices of pork in it, and downed a few Asahi beers. Then we went to crash. The next morning, I was reading through the hotel notebook, and it turns out we were in the Chinatown section of Yokohama, and it was Chinese New Year. :lol

Have fun, eat some Japanese food. It's not all raw fish. Drink some Asahi, or Kirin, or Sapporo beer. Buy some souveniers. Be nice to people.

Cabs are EXPENSIVE. On our outbound flight the next morning, the cab to Haneda airport was $75, and that was like 10 years ago! See if you can get some sort of shuttle, or at least be prepared with sufficient cash.

People smoke like fucking chimneys over there, too. There is like a cloud haze near the top of the terminal at Narita airport.

If you take the shuttle, be prepared to be squished like a sardine.. at least that's what I'm told.

Yeah I read that a Taxi from Narita to downtown is currently around $200. But they have a shuttle that runs from Narita to all the major hotels for around $28, so I think I'll take that route.

Do they have basketball courts there? I think I could dominate

That's the way that we went from Narita to the hotel. I think we were under some time pressure going out of Haneda the next morning, though, so we took a cab. :wow

I was there in 1996. Everything is expensive! I walking into a bar during happy hour and was shocked to find every drink in the house was $3.00 till 10:00. After that a can of Budweiser ran $10.00. I noticed that if I put my beer down it disappeared. The hotel prices were ridiculous! I passed on the hotel and fell asleep at the subway station. From what I recall it was cheap and the routes were color coded. I started out at Yokusuka and made my way to Tokyo and back plastered, so I would imagine it's rather simple. Word to the wise, the men will hate you but the women will love you...

What type of things are you looking for? How much of a budget do you have?

Now that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make

What type of things are you looking for? How much of a budget do you have?

Budget not really an issue, unless of course we're talking "Oh my god I could have bought a bigger house with that" type of deal.
I'm open to anything, I just hate to make the 16 hour flight back and then hear about all the interesting stuff I could have done while I was there.

I've been there a few times. Go to Rappungi (sp?) district. You can have some serious fun there. Check out the 7th Heaven strip club.

Roppongi is def a place to spend a couple of nights. It is SUPER expensive. Most clubs there really start happening after midnight & go on til dawn or later. On Sat & Sun many people get together outside of the subway centers of Shibuya, Harajuku and Shinjuku. I forget which one it was (Shinjuku?) but there were HUNDREDS of 16-30yo dressed up in 50's garb & other genres as well. I'd suggest you do what we did. Speak to other Westerners & see what clubs are happening & openly OK to Baka Gaijin. You'll def see some attitude towards you in Tokyo. You should take a day trip out to Mt Fuji & climb it. There used to a Marine base @ the base of Fujisan..if still there they'd know what clubs in Tokyo allow hard partying by loud gaijin.
