Guard Gary Payton should be placed on waivers today by Atlanta, according to the Boston Herald. ''We've reached an agreement with the Hawks, and things should be in place no later than early (today),'' said Payton's agent, Aaron Goodwin. ''It's just going to be a matter of getting the paperwork approved by the league.'' Assuming he clears waivers, Payton is leaning towards a return to the Celtics.

The poor Hawks have been swindled! It goes without saying that Payton hasn't been the same player he once was, putting up 12.1 points, 6.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game this season. Should he be reacquired by the Celtics, it begs the question, what direction will Boston take this season? Do they play young talent, or push for the highest possible playoff seed? The Celtics are currently the third seed in the Eastern Conference, so they are likely to make a push for the playoffs, and put their strong desire to play their youngsters on hold until next year.
