View Full Version : What Actor's Movies Can't You Watch?

MrChug

What movies do you see someone in and say to yourself "Not watching that crap" or, "Well, I ALMOST thought about watching that one, but nah...hate that dude/chick" :lol

There's plenty for me but some popular answers include Keanu Reeves, Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, Ben Affleck, Denzel Washington, and even Vince Vaughn.

I gotta admit I haven't seen a movie with ANY of these "actors" in a while, but the longest is Denzel. Should have seen American Gangster but he overacts so much can't even bring myself to see that...

I don't watch any movie that stars the Scientology wackos Tom Cruise or John Travolta. And neither Will Smith, for that matter.

I must shamefully admit that I think I've watched every Willy movie although he tends to overact as well. The difference between he and Denzel though...at least Will's funny.

EDIT: You know what I just noticed about the top picks according to that US magazine poll (I think)? Is that most of those guys in the list seem to just have one character and THAT'S IT. They're like the exact same person in every film. Just an opinion.

I can't think of any actors that are enough to keep me out of a film based on their involvement alone, but a preview has to be damned good to get me in the theater for Kevin Bacon. Or Tom Cruise.

+1, but I think my opinion was quite skewed by a friend of mine who kept pointing out he was the worst P.O.S. actor he'd ever seen. My opinion changed from then on.

Can't stand Tim Allen, but loved Galaxy Quest. Nicolas Cage has been in a LOT of crap, but he's also been in Raising Arizona, Leaving Las Vegas, and Adaptation. I have an aversion to Kurt Russell, but Tombstone is brilliance and I have a soft spot for his early work with John Carpenter. I would rather slice my eyeballs open than watch Robin Williams in a comedic role, but I really like him as a dramatic actor. And so on.

I think he's bored and unhappy with what he's done lately. I caught a Charlie Rose interview with him where he depressingly more or less said he only did American Gangster for the money. Actually, outside of The Great Debators, I think he's been doing everything for the money in recent years. He should chill, take a couple years off. Quit doing these lame ass, cliche, Man on Fire, Inside Man, John Q type of roles. He's a better actor than the guy who's been doing these weak "thriller" films.

I dont think about entertainment enough to dislike anyone besides the obvious ones (Cook, Hilton, etc).

Next is a movie, thats all it was. I didnt watch it thinking "Oh, its Oscar time!" then get disappointed somehow when it was categorized as an action flick.

cage was great in the few, non-Bruckheimer films hes done (never seen Weatherman). Theyve already been mentioned.

But I do have an odd movie habit. Tom Cruise. Despise the man for no good reason in real life for being a wacko with outrageous demands on movie studios, propogating Hollywood religions and the like. Yet, if War of the Worlds is on, you can be damn sure I am watching it. Same with the Mission Impossible series, Few Good Men, hell even Valkyrie looks ok knowing how it ends (duh).

Other than that, I look at movies individually with really no idea who is behind the camera beforehand (dont care too much for Hollywood or what theyre selling). Grindhouse fucking sucked. So did Jackie Brown. Does that mean I shouldnt like Rodrieguez or Tarentino (sp? I dont give a shit)?

No, because Dusk til Dawn and Resevoir Dogs are classic. I just dont look at it that way. There are highs, there are lows and some last longer in one of those stages than others.

Matter of taste, really. I'd probably put Jackie Brown as my least favorite of his films, which was right in the middle of his career (so far).

I'm an unabashed fangirl, though, because even as my least favorite of his films, I still think Jackie Brown is pretty awesome.

This sounds like it might be pretty sweet.

Oh, and for awhile there when he was popular, I avoided Ron Schnieder movies like they had the plague.

If I'd only ever seen the double feature of Death Proof, it would definitely be at the bottom of that list, but I really liked the full length version. The filmmaking itself, pacing in particular, I thought was incredibly smart, especially when compared to the type of film he was trying to emulate.

Benicio Del Toro totally creeps me out. He's a good actor, in decent movies that I cannot see because he makes my skin crawl! :grim:

I saw him hanging out at the Continental one night in Austin. A friend of mine went up and talked to him and he turned out to be a really cool guy. Totally laid back (damn tall, too).

Because it's four hours and 17 minutes long (or so). And because, from what I've heard, is made of up and absolutely brilliant and engaging first two hours, followed by a second half that changes in tone and style and that is wholly unnecessary.

I was aware of the length, but sometimes it seems not to matter. I've read/heard several interviews with Soderbergh and Del Toro and both talked about the 2 parts of the film and how they don't have a dialogue with each other and that editing it down to one film was impossible. I also found it interesting that the intended project grew having no bounds because of the lack of factual information. Del Toro talked about meetings he had with actual companions of Che at the time of his death, and they all gave different accounts of who, why and where. Then 2 hours later everyone changed their story! :lol I'll check it out, but it'll be tough to best "The Motorcycle Diaries".

It is (or will be) available to watch in two parts, as well. I definitely want to see it because I love Soderbergh as a director and have heard that the performances, especially Del Toro, are amazing. Bit of a tough sell for the Academy, though.

I finally watched Valkyrie last night. The Bluray was on sale, so I bought it. It was a pleasant surprise considering I haven't liked any other Tom Cruise movies since 1995. I liked all his movies 1994 and earlier. just not the later work.

Juliet Lewis, annoying as she may be, was in Natural Born Killers and Kalifornia. No way is her presence going to keep me from watching either of those.

My feelings on this topic are the same as they were when the thread was started, though. An actor (or director) I like might be enough to get me to watch a movie I wouldn't otherwise be interested in, but a crappy actor (or director) isn't enough to keep me from watching a movie that looks good.

That's a good point, but I have a hard time going by that good rule of thumb. Some people just really get to me, like (Hanoi) Jane Fonda. If she wasn't in Monster-in-Law, i probable would have seen that movie by now. Sorry, but I'm just not as good as you in that aspect. The last movie I saw with her in it was "9 to 5."

I don't know what's more disconcerting here: that you'd let an actor's political affiliations stop you from seeing a movie, or that the movie currently being blocked out for that reason is Monster-in-Law.

Many years ago I was in Toronto for a basketball tournament and low and behold Eddie Griffin the actor was in the hotel bar. I said wasup to him and he was piss drunk. And he said something like "what's up, doctor." I laughed and told him I wasn't a doctor and he got mad for correcting him even though I wasn't being serious. All of a sudden, I'm in a shoving match with Eddie Griffin. Now, I'm not a big dude. I'm like 5'10 and at the time probably around 190-200 tops. But Eddie Griffin is a small man. I'm laughing at the guy while he's trying to shove me. Lol Anthony Anderson broke it up and apologized for him

Anyway, from then on, I vowed to not watch another one of his films. Not because he made bad movies, but I wanted to see him broke. I had to make an exception for Deuce Bigelow 2, which was a mistake. I should have skipped that too.

I can't grasp some of the idiocy in this thread. How could someone have anything against Kurt Russell, Jeff Bridges, or Sigourney Weaver? I don't really have biases against any actor unless their movies suck (cough Sandler cough) but I could understand some annoying or unfunny people or someone whose politics bothers you but some of the random ordinary actors thrown out here is baffling. Even Sandler if I hear good things about a movie he is in like Punch Drunk Love or Reign over Me I'll give it fair unbiased shot.

And the guy who said he didn't like Denzel Washington is retarded. Although he needs to stay away from all those Topny Scott movies. That guy has some of the most annoying, needlessly flashy "look at me" cinematography in show business. I mean blur effects and camera shakiness in a random non-important kitchen conversation between two people kind of annoyingness.
