View Full Version : Lakers Offering Odom for Jermaine O Neal?
Brazil

didn't see posted.
While many league executives figured Jermaine O’Neal would be heading to Miami for Shawn Marion any day now, it now seems there is a new front runner (http://layupdrill.com/2009/01/lamar-odom-being-offered-for-jermaine-o-neal/#) in obtaining the services of the big man. The Toronto Sun (http://blog.canoe.ca/courtside/)reports today that the Los Angeles Lakers (http://layupdrill.com/2009/01/lamar-odom-being-offered-for-jermaine-o-neal/#) have contacted the Raptors about offering forward Lamar Odom and his expiring contract for O’Neal.
The Lakers, who had at one time attempted to land O’Neal when he was a member of the Pacers (http://layupdrill.com/2009/01/lamar-odom-being-offered-for-jermaine-o-neal/#), are obviously not completely sold on the prospects of a Bynum and Gasol front court in the postseason, and this move could help both teams now and later.
If the Heat do not land O’Neal, their plan B seems to be targeted around Kings’ big man Brad Miller or Mavericks forward Josh Howard.
A Howard-for-Shawn Marion swap may get some buzz around the net, but Dallas reportedly is not interested. Meanwhile, Sacramento, who had originally looked to Charlotte for a deal for Miller, may wait a few more weeks to see who comes up with the best package for the veteran center.

Quite weird indeed, but apparently for whatever the Lakers seem to like JO

I would love it.
But won't happen.
The Toronto media wants to get rid of JO, so they start a very dumb rumor.

Lamar Odom is probably THE BIGGEST mismatch for the Spurs. Great rebounder, great length, great moves to the basket....
DO IT LAKERS!!!

This trade doesn't help Toronto and makes the Lakers worse.

PLEASE DO IT!!!! Odom is just starting to play well for them and is getting comfortable, please trade him for Jermaine's brittle knee.

I can't see the Lakers making any move at all. First, it would make sense to see what the other teams do first, then assess if an adjustment to that is needed. In other words, when you have the best hand in poker, don't overplay it.
Edit: Suppose the Lakers trade Odom for J. Oneal. Then the Raptors deal him immediately to the Spurs for Oberto, Vaughn, and a draft pick. Talk about tasting your own ass!

I also heard this rumor...just doesn't seem to make any sense.
Jermaine O' Neal is going to make $23 million next year. Why would anyone want a part of that? That's Kobe/LeBron type money for a guy whose prime seems long gone.
Just my 2 cents, maybe the Lakers have lost their mind :D

only reason the lakers would do this is if the raptors take luke's contract and also include a small guard like will solomon. oneal is past his prime but he is only 29 and with pau and bynum, he can come off the bench and play only 25 minutes a night so he stays fresh. however with ALL that said, he is still on the books for 23 mil for next year and lakers need that money to resign ariza and extend farmar in the offseason. doubt this happens

This makes about as much sense as Shaq going to the Suns, that would never happen.

i would rather try to get baron davis. he is relatively healthy and clippers look like they are trying to shed his contract.

not too outragious. 5 year deal paying him 11 this year and increasing by a mil every 4 years. when hes 34 he will make 14.8 mil when his contract is up.

I'd take Luke's contract over Luke himself, why would anyone want Luke Walton.?

because they would get rid of a 44 million dollar contract (whats left of oneals deal)

If the Lakers make this trade they pretty much show that they have no faith in Bynum.

Arent JO's knees questionable?
well JO earns $21 million and his contract expires in 2010. lakers could be looking for some cap space by packaging odom with walton. walton's toxic contract extends until 2013 so the lakers might be trying to lure another team into taking it by using odom's expiring $14 million contract. but all that aside, do it lakers. then i can listen to bynum bitch about not getting more touches in the post.

Noway the Lakers would be dumb enough to make that trade. JO's a big question if he will ever ever come close to his old days and personally I thought he was overrated then. Especially this late in the season would make no sense.

I would do this trade in the offseason if everyone is healthy and regardless if the lakers win the chip. Still, it's intriguing to say the least. I love Odom but he's not a scorer and the lakers need another scorer coming off the bench and a legitimate post up threat in JO. Are JO's best days behind him....possibly but he's had some great games in Toronto this year. He can still rebound, hit the outside shot and help defense.
I would also like Odom in Toronto. He'd start opposite Bosh and give them another look and I'd think he'l flourish in that system.

Odom was the player on the Lakers that gave the suns the most trouble when the suns were good a couple years back. They had no one to guard him.

A better rebounder, a better defender.
On offense Bynum doesn't do anything but take lobs from Kobe and try soft turnaround jumpshots, and I think J.O. can do that.

Odom put up 19 points and 9 rebounds tonight in 30 minutes. He's a rich man's Jermaine O'Neal.
The problem with the Raptors is their terrible interior D...compliments of Chris Bosh and J O'Neal.
Both are great Offensive players but neither one plays good D.
They need to get rid of one of them and get a defensive minded big.

No one on the Raps play D though. Maybe they should get a centre instead of playing skinny PF at the 5.

If JO becomes a Laker, Bynum disappears
Not really, Bynum would get more minutes and be featured in the offense more. JO would probably play backup center exclusively. Which means Pau wouldn't have to slide over to make room for Odom and Bynum can actually finish games.
Bynum is much more effective when given consistent minutes/looks.
The fact is Odom is most likely gone next season due to tax reasons. If the Lakers dump Luke's nuclear contract then Ariza can be extended long term and the Lakers would be more willing to spend the MLE on a player that actually deserves it after 2010. Hopefully on a point guard that can play defense.

It's an article of the Toronto Suns that has been relayed by some websites in the US and in Europe.
The fact this not even being discussed on laker forums doesn't mean shit.
Nevertheless IMO it's just a rumor like hundred of others in 1% of the cases it appears to be true and 99% it's just another rumor.
This trade not gonna happen unfortunately.
