The World Famous LayupDrill Rumor Mill
1/22/09 Suns Center Shaquille O’ Neal told reporters in New York ” I’m feeling I can play five more years.” More than likely, those five years won’t be in a Suns uniform though. That brings up a very interesting idea that NY Newsday reports today. Could Shaq end his career with Coach Mike D’Antoni as the anchor of the Knicks front court? Shaq, who will be a free agent in 2010, may be interested in playing in the biggest city in the world, and if his recent play is any indicator(22 Points, 10 Rebounds over the last month) then Shaq will have suitors, in New York and other cities.
As talks have continued on both sides of the Stephon Marbury (http://layupdrill.com/2009/01/shaq-may-end-career-in-new-york/#) buyout saga, a new potential suitor has emerged as the front runner for his services. The NY Post (http://www.nypost.com/seven/01222009/sports/knicks/steph_mulls_greece_move_151367.htm)reports this morning that Marbury is being courted by the Greek team Olympiacos, the same team who signed former Hawks star Josh Childress last summer.
Reports state Marbury may be offered nearly $15 Million dollars to play for the Greece team, which would far exceed any amount any NBA could offer him to play for half a season. Stay Tuned….
The Miami Herald (http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/basketball/story/866595.html) reports this morning that the Heat management are only interested in receiving players who have contracts expiring no later than next season in return for swingman Shawn Marion. This would help the Heat place themselves in the hunt to land a big name free agent to go alongside Dwayne Wade in the future.
Richard Hamilton is a true professional, but he is also very honest. When asked by reporters (http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090122/SPORTS0102/901220350/1127) how he liked coming off the bench for the Detroit Pistons, he replied it was “probably one of the weirdest things I’ve dealt with since I’ve been in the league.”
In Larry Hughes news, we reported yesterday that talks between the Nets and Bulls had started regarding trading the veteran guard to New Jersey for Bobby Simmons. The only concern Nets management seem to have currently is the additional 3.5 Million dollars they would be adding to their roster by bringing on Hughes. The Bergen Record (http://www.northjersey.com/sports/nets/38126644.html)reports GM Kiki Vandeweghe also is concerned about Hughes’ locker room presence. Hughes has continued to voice his displeasure about his lack of playing time in Chicago (http://layupdrill.com/2009/01/shaq-may-end-career-in-new-york/#), and that he is ready to “move on” and continue his career. The Chicago Tribune (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/basketball/bulls/chi-22-bulls-bits-chicagojan22,0,4913254.story) reports Bulls GM John Paxon has made Hughes aware of the reason why they are trying to trade him is to develop their younger players.
If the Nets don’t get Larry Hughes, there may be another alternative for them to upgrade their small forward position. The Newark Star-Ledger reports the Nets may be interested in bringing in Mike Miller from the Timberwolves. Miller has done little since leaving Memphis, and may welcome a new start back East.
Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer talked to the media yesterday, stating he would like to return from his surgery by All-Star break. Right now there is no definitive timetable on Boozer’s return, however many Jazz personnel don’t expect him back until February 21 against the Hornets. The Jazz are currently in the middle of a very tight playoff race in the West, and Boozer feels his healthy return will help Utah gain a top four seed.
