Wow...that is a shocker. I hope Tomei wins the best supporting actress. For as much as she showed on camera, she deserves it...

There's no question that Supporting Actor is going posthumously to Ledger, and it's a deserving performance, but that is one hell of a strong category this year. Including Robert Downey, Jr. (who I'd actually kind of like to see win the thing, just because comedic performances so rarely get recognition despite being every bit as challenging as dramatic performances).

I was surprised Winslet got nominated in lead actress for "The Reader." And I didn't care for "The Changeling" at all, and I thought Jolie's performance was OK but not Oscar worthy, so I was surprised at that. I am rooting for Anne Hathaway, I think.

I agree with CF about comedy, but Ledger is a sure thing, I think. I did literally laugh out loud at him in Tropic Thunder a few times, and it seems to me that laughing out loud at a movie is so rare these days. Probably cus of all the crap that passes for comedy.

Did Benjamin Button really deserve that much love?

Screenplay and Best Actor are a bit of a stretch, in my opinion, but I'm okay with the latter since there's no chance of Brad Pitt winning -- the performance was, I thought, good enough to merit nomination, but not good enough to beat out Richard Jenkins or Mickey Rourke. Best Picture... meh, I didn't think so, but I'm not surprised by the nomination. I was really happy with Taraji P. Henson's Supporting Actress nomination, though.

Benjamin Button was way too long and boring to be nominated for best picture. It didn't have enough humor. Much of the story was predictable, imo. Maybe you have to read the book to appreciate it.

Benjamin Button has a good chance to win the awards for such aspects as cinematography, art direction, and visual effects. Do not discount how much the academy likes motion pictures of its type.

Ledger and Rourke are shoo-ins.

Teh gays might give Best Actor to Penn for Milk like they did for Lee & Brokeback Mountain. And they came up with THREE songs from TWO movies. WTF is that shit, they nominated and awarded 3-6 Mafia one year and they came up with 3 songs. I hope Wally beats that Hadji movie for that category and every one they share a nomination

Part of the double-edged sword that is the Best Animated Feature category -- nice that it ensures animation will always be recognized, but keeps deserving animated films from every being considered for Best Picture.

Lots of fools, more than willing than willing to part with their money.

The Dark Knight was at best a decent popcorn flick. I'd argue it was much worse. Either way, the idea that TDK deserved Oscar nods for best picture is ridiculous beyond measure and anyone who would say so is obviously uneducated in the merits of truly good cinema.

TDK being nominated wouldn't have been any worse than Life Is Beautiful or Titanic or Shakespeare In Love getting nominated (and winning for the last 2). To make it sound like the Academy has such a high standard for film that TDK doesn't deserve a nomination is obtuse at best.

More than likely TDK lost votes because nobody could take a dogface like Maggie Gyllenhaal as "the hot girl every guy in the film wants" seriously.

Benjamin Button was terrible. I had heard it was kind of boring but I was not expecting boring and stupid. I can't believe David Fincher put his name on that piece of garbage. The only redeeming quality was the performance of the mother, well deserving of her Oscar nomination. I haven't been that disappointed in a movie in a long time.

I had Rourke pegged to use it, except that when it became clear Hollywood was going to screw Van Zant out of his Oscar ONCE AGAIN, I was pretty sure Penn would get the Oscar over Rourke.

Rourke and Penn both gave amazing performances.

The highlight was San Antonio refugee Dustin Lance Black winning best screenplay:

"If Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he would want me to say to all the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told they are less than by the churches, by the government, by their families, that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value, and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours," Black said."

Giving Van Sant an Oscar for Milk would have been like when they gave it to Scorsese for The Departed....it wasn't anywhere close to said director's best film.

The one difference being that The Departed was still a badass movie, and Milk sucked cock (no pun inten......yes, pun intended.)

That's just his second, and I think two Oscars are already too many for him.

Penn was born in 1960 but he looks even older than Warren Beatty who was born in 1937.

You can't fight hate with more hate and that is how the end of his speech sounded to me.

The awards I had the biggest problems with (and only because I filled out a ballot for a contest) was Best Makeup. How does Benjamin Button win that over Hellboy? I hated how they didn't show clips of the nominated actors during those awards. The intros by past winners were fine and all but I really missed seeing highlights of the performances.

The awards I had the biggest problems with (and only because I filled out a ballot for a contest) was Best Makeup. How does Benjamin Button win that over Hellboy? A huge part of the "aging" effect in BB was achieved with CG and lighting. I thought the makeup was actually pretty bad when it could be seen in detail.

Ditto.

So you object to those who use shame against homo-sexuality but support those who use shame against those who use shame against homo-sexuality?

I haven't seen the Wrestler (looks like a movie I would enjoy though), soI can't say anything. I think Penn is a great actor, I've seen Milk and thought that he did a really grat job.

I don't think that Milk was an amazing movie though. (just good.)

I'm glad that Heath and Kate Winlet finally got their Oscars

Yes. I feel that those who fight against anyone's basic human rights should be shamed.

I simply think there is a huge difference between:

"...no matter what everyone tells you, God does love you, and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours."

and

"anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren’s eyes if they continue that way of support."

Yes you're right, those are 2 different ways of saying the same thing. I suppose it's a reflection of each one's personality. But those are the kind of messages that will need to be delivered a zillion more times in a zillion more ways to finally achieve a common goal. I guess I just believe that it was their moment, and they could use it however they pleased; and I prefer those kind of messages to a "me,me,me" platform.

I am so pleased that Kate Winslet won. I think she is an excellent actress and she seems like a nice person as well.

:tu
and it was her 6th nomination, that would have sucked if she lost again.

Just saw Slumdog Millionaire tonight. That movie earned every award it took home, and maybe should have received a couple more. I can't recall the last time I left a movie theatre feeling that good. When I watched the Oscars last night, I had hoped that Milk would win it (loved that film, too), but I've changed my mind.

Best movie I've seen since There Will Be Blood, and even then I might consider Slumdog a better movie.

Sean Penn deserved it.

I watched Milk last night and I have to say that even though Penn won Best Actor, I think his performance might still be underrated. He was that good, and while I loved Rourke in The Wrestler, IMO they weren't even close... The fact that it was even a question that Penn would win it makes the performance underrated.

In hindsight, I wouldn't have batted an eye if Milk had won Best Picture. Just a fantastic all-around movie.

Nic Cage deserved that Oscar. I can't stand most of his recent work, but his performance in Leaving Las Vegas was amazing.

he was pissed, look

I don't Understand how the English Patient won best picture. It was one of the few movies that I ever turned off in the middle of the movie. Also
The Aviator is one of the most ovverated movies.

I thought that the Dark Knight was good, but not good enough to gross over one billion. :whine

The only thing I didn't like about Slumdog was the theme of destiny, and the whole "God is Great" motif that kept popping up.

the torture scene looked like a scene out of RAMBO 3. the kid may or may not have cheated on a TELEVISION SHOW for gods sake. stupid exaggerated scenes to 'pull our heart strings' as my wife said
