The Portland Trail Blazers fired coach Maurice Cheeks on Wednesday, ESPN's Stephen A. Smith reported.

The team scheduled a news conference at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Kevin Pritchard, Portland's director of player personnel, will be Portland's interim coach, Smith reported.

The Trail Blazers are 22-33 this season. Their next game is Friday against the Indiana Pacers.

Cheeks, in his fourth season with the team, led the Blazers to the first round of the playoffs in his first two seasons.

Doesn't Kevin Pritchard have a Spurs link of some sort?

Hardly a big surprise that Porty let Mo go, but it's too bad. Under better circumstances, I think Cheeks could do a nice job.

He used to be a scout for the Spurs I believe.
