Recently-retired forward Shareef Abdur-Rahim traveled to New York City on Wednesday to meet with a doctor that could save the Kings $6.2 million this season.

The doctor, appointed by the NBA, would need to confirm a diagnosis of severe arthritis in order for Sacramento to trim more than six million off of their 2008-09 payroll.

Abdur-Rahim hasn't played since Nov. 12, 2007.

question: The Doc who deemed Darius Miles unable to play, was he appointed by the NBA or just someone the Blazers hired?
