The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have recalled Malik Hairston from the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League (D-League).

Hairston is currently the fifth leading scorer in the D-League with 21.1 points per game. In 23 games for the Toros this season he has also averaged 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists in 40.6 minutes. Hairston was named D-League Performer of the Week on 12/22 after helping lead the Toros to three straight wins while averaging 24.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists

The Spurs have got a lot of sub .500 teams coming up. It's possible they're hoping to get him a few minutes on the floor. Plus, being part of the cohesion that comes with the rodeo road trip is probably a good idea.

Kinda expected this. They usually have all of their players with them on the trip, I guess just to experience it, but I actually think he can play in a couple of the games on the trip, including the Golden State game. Maybe even against New Jersey if the Spurs can get a large lead.

Who doesn't dress out for tonight other than Ian?

Good point. This will allow Hairston to get the feeling of the team and also get some minutes against NBA competiton. Hopefully/I expect to happen - we get a few blowouts and Malik gets valuable minutes, helping his developrment and saving some legs. Should be interesting to see how he progresses though I don't see him as a contributor this year. After the RRT he will probably go back to Austin and finish out the year there.
I'd loved to wrong on this and he comes out :smokin but sincerely doubt it.

Hairston has a legitimate chance to stick. There are plenty of Udoka minutes to take. If the Toros have been running Spurs defensive sets then he may surprise a few people.

Vaughn will likely join Ian.

I hope Hairston can find some minutes during this road trip.

While I agree with you, I'm not even sure the Spurs are even considering that option.

Hopefully, if he's given the opportunity, his play doesn't allow the Spurs to send him back down.

It would be a pretty big assumption to even think that Hairston dresses.

Having said all that...

RRT experience is the motivation here, and from a pure chemistry standpoint it's probably good to take along a few new guys like Mason and now Hairston who are 1st timers.

They did the same thing with James white. Purely for the experience factor, probably won't dress at all.

After the DNP last night and no news from the Toros about any family emergency or an injury that kept him out this was the most likely scenario, especially since...as other have mentioned...the Spurs have a history of bringing all the players along on the RRT.

As I said in the other thread, we play some teams that we could defeat handily so Hairston has a shot to see some minutes against some backups of other squads. You never can tell though...Pop seems to be even more mad scientist this year with his experiments so it wouldn't surprise me to see Hairston get some minutes with the second team regardless. This will be especially true if Finley/Bonner start sucking and Pop opts to give him Udoka's minutes.

Possibly true that Malik won't dress but with some many sub .500 teams on the menu I think it more likely that he gets some minutes in the blowouts -which I think there could have a few - GS - Wash - Tor - NJ - NY - these all have the possibility of being one. I could only hope that happens - saving the legs of our starters and giving valuable PT to Malik and the backups.

good posts..I think benefactor hit it..Pop has been experimenting a lot this season, so I'd actually be surprised if Hairson doesn't get some minutes against teams like GS or NJ, or even to send a message when a few of our swingmen are playing poorly in a game..

it's not like Ime is playing like he wants those minutes..

I hope he shines if given the opportunity. Ime doesn't seem to be getting out of his funk.

I honestly would try to trade Udoka for a 2nd round pick of an eastern conference team thats fighting for a playoff spot. Then I would just give his minutes to bowen or hairston.

there's always the possibility of getting a motivated Ime from this move, like we saw with Bonner-Tolliver..
