Remember that he wanted to stay in ES because of sickness in the family. Very sorry to hear that chapter has closed.

The pivot Michelle splitter, sister of Tiago Splitter, the Brazilian team in basketball and Tau Ceramica (ESP), died Monday suffering from leukemia.

A couple of just 18 years, who had received a bone marrow transplantation, had overcome the disease and returned to court in 2007 – but the problem occur again, and this time, she did not resist.

The player’s Tau Ceramica, which followed the whole drama of her sister, is already in Campinas (SP), which is veiled the body of Michelle.

During the first treatment for leukemia, the player had to leave the Brazilian team under 17 and came to lose 17 pounds.

maybe that is why Tiago sold us out to sign that contract in Europe. Maybe he needed as much money as possible to help her pay for her treatments and so forth.

He never gave his word to the Spurs so he didnt sell out. And yeah, one of the reason he presumably stayed was to be with his sick sister and ensure she got the best care.

I think that now that the full story, we hould respect Tiago for his decison to stay in Europe.. fans obviously don't know all the considerations that went into his decision but obviously his sister's situation weighed heavily. RIP.

from another blog:

The Splitter siblings have longed enjoyed a close relationship. One under-reported aspect of Tiago Splitter’s decision to resign with Tau Ceramica was the care of his sister. Tiago Splitter lives in Spain with his family and Michelle had received medical treatment there. Along with all the other variables of his free agent decision, the advantage of maintaining a stable home life in light of Michelle’s health must have been attractive to the Brazilian center.

I think what everybody is failing to see is the situation with his sister battling whatever heath problems she is. Apparently she has a killer illness from what I have heard.

I also read he has his family there in Europe, for his sister to have medical attention.

Him coming to the USA isn't exactly the best bet option for his family, and apparently that means a lot to him.

I'm surprised you're the only picking up on this.

Just to add to your post. A big € contract will go a long way to secure top notch medical treatment for his sister and probably finance the family while in Europe. All of this becomes very difficult on a NBA rookie salary. If he had to throw caution to the wind for only himself the decision would be a lot easier.

Funny how the picture changes when one has more information to work with eh?

To my knowledge, he never made a promise to the Spurs to come here. You can't call him a sellout in that case (and especially given the circumstances).

I'm sorry, did I miss something??

I was jumping the gun and just didn't want someone coming in and saying something insensitive because of the animosity some feel towards Splitter for staying in Europe. In a number of other threads, some posters can be real jerks like the celebrating an opposing players injury or insulting peoples looks in the thread where people are posting their photos.

I jumped the gun as everyone has been respectful.

Life and our loved ones are what is important. We can't let ourselves get too carried away with our joy of following a sports team that we lose sight of that.

Condolences to the family and friends and props to Spurstalk posters.

There are three things in life that you can't get back. Time, Words and Opportunity. Hopefully Tiago got the time and the opportunity to share his feelings with his sister before her untimely demise. Leaving this world at age 18 seems so unfair since she really didn't get the full opportunity to experience life.

May she rest in peace and may God bless her soul.
