Lost a family member Saturday. Been through it before but it doesn't get any easier.

This one was so special. I have a family, the mom and dad and 2 of their 5 kittens. Q.J. was the middle kitten, I had to help his mom when he was born because she was so distracted with the first 2.

He was 9 and a half, kidney failure. Nothing could be done other than to prolong it, and the treatment seemed like torture.

The other 3 are looking for him, they've never been apart.

He was suffering, it was some comfort to be able to see him relax.

I'm sorry - losing an animal really is like losing a member of the family when you've had them that long :(

I'm so sorry for your loss (and for his siblings):depressed

I'm an avid cat person, and it just kills me when I hear about this stuff. I've put many of my own cats to sleep due to kidney problems so I think I can say I know what you are going through. It will take time, but eventually it'll get easier, that seems flippant now...but I hope you know what I mean.

I would watch the siblings very closely and note their behavior. I'm sure you know to make sure they eat and all that, but I've heard of cats becoming so depressed they refuse to eat. The grieving process for cats usually lasts 2 to 6 weeks...I would give them plenty of extra attention and maybe that would help to take their minds off their loss for just a little bit.

Thanks. (Everyone.)

It's not flippant, I've been through it several times, it will ease. And knowing he's not suffering helps a lot. He was so sick, dehydrated and in pain.

I'm watching the family, they are upset. I once had a brother and sister pair, when I had to put her down I brought him with me on my vet's advice. It served a couple of purposes, it let him understand and it let me leave with a living animal. This time I just took him, I didn't bring the others with me. I put his collar down where they can get to it, they've all spent some time with it. His mother was with him before I took him. I believe they knew how sick he was.

For a house with 3 cats it seems kind of empty at the moment.

He was 9 and a half literally.

Having the other 3 does help.

That's a good idea with the collar. I have three cats too, and it always seems like a mad house with multiple bouts of "Kitty Derby" going on...but I wouldn't want to live without that chaos. I wish you guys lots of comfort :(

Coming from someone with a memorial tattoo on their shoulder??? That is so wrong!!! If you don't like cats, that's fine, who cares. But to butt in this thread, with that kind of smack, when some one is greiving over a special member of their family, you are so out of line here.

Sorry about your and his siblings' loss D228. Just be at peace, knowing you did the most gentle humane thing for him.

I have expierenced the same thing you are going through...I had a mother and son pair. I had to put my "boy" to sleep a couple of years ago and I still have his mom "Baby". We both miss him terribly.

My sympathies Duncan228.

I'm deeply sorry for your loss, duncan228.

I know words alone can't help much, but know that you are not alone. I, too, had to say goodbye to my friend Buster last Friday, a cat that I have known since I was but a toddler. I used to sit and make up stories to tell this cat, just so he would trust me and let me pet him. He ended up becoming one of the greatest friends I have ever known. I don't think any other pet, no matter how special, could quite fill that same spot in my heart. I will miss him more than a cat could ever comprehend.

A friend of mine sent this to me, and it helped me feel better. I can only hope that it offers you a small amount of solace as well.

Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here,
that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can
run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm
and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and
vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again,
just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they
each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly
stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His
eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying
over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally
meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your
pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thanks Dex.

There's more than the timing overlapping in our stories, Q.J.'s father's name is Buster.

Crazy the way the world turns sometimes, isn't it?

It's definitely sad, but to everything, there is its time. Thus is part of the problem with having such meaningful relationships with creatures who's time here is but a quarter of ours.

It's one of those days that is bound to come, but it doesn't make it any easier when it does.

We just put my cat Sassy to sleep a few weeks ago (I think like three weeks ago maybe). It was a while coming. She was about 16 years old, she was my cat, completely and it just killed me to have her gone. She died of some kidney stuff too, I think it gets a lot of them. Her buddy, Jazzpurr died about a year ago of colon cancer so we've lost a lot of animals recently.

We had one other cat, Milo, who is just devastated that she is gone, he meows and looks for her even now and its been a few weeks. The dogs were depressed for a few days, even though they didn't really hang out with her, animals just know. They're there for each other just like we are. :)

I'm crying right with you and your family right now. :(

D228 I'm very sorry for your loss; and I'm sorry that you would have to endure the sadistic thoughtlessness of a fellow poster. I got the same when I lost my cat a few months ago and the additional pain was terrible. Our animals touch our lives and souls in a way that only an animal lover can appreciate. You are fortunate to have the other cats to hold, and they are lucky to have you. And my little tabby, Tiny, is fortunate to be up in kitty heaven snuggling up with your QJ!

Lost Q.J.'s brother, the first born, to kidney failure today. :(

He got so sick so fast, I'm relieved he's at peace.

It seems so weird that I have the mother and father, but I lost both sons.

Sorry to hear about your loss. I have had to do this once with my cat and still to this day I get a lump in my throat from time to time thinging of him. He touched so many parts of my life you know. I have 2 cats now and I don't want to think about the day when I'll have to do it again. However it's part of life and as long as we remember them they will never be truely gone.

Wow, seriously? What the fuck did that accomplish? I'm not a cat fan either (alergic), but you have to be a grade A asshole to make fun of someone's dead cat when you don't know that person and it's a person who's never been mean to anyone on this site.

Anyways, sorry about your loss D228. I got my first pet 5-6 years ago, she still has plenty of time left, but Idk how bad it's gonna be when she dies.

I'm so sorry, D228. It sucks when you lose a pet who has been with you and love for so long, let alone two in the span of less than a year. My sweet kitty died on Monday, from old age, and even though we knew it was coming, it was a blow.

Thanks for the kind thoughts everyone. My cats are part of my family and the loss hurts. There are much greater losses in life, but that doesn't mean we don't grieve for the smaller ones. It will ease, but it's raw at the moment. He was quite the character and I'll miss him.

I am taken by the parent cats reaction. They're looking for him, the mother is walking around meowing softly. I don't know if I would have believed it had I not seen it with Q.J. They mourn too.
