I don't think it was a "smart move". He didn't conjure up this plan 2 days ago.

Probably not, but what difference does it make if he planned it two weeks ago or two hours before tonight's game. Spurs get a split, at the worst, and the big three not only stay healthy but get some rest. Stupid fucking Pop!

It's like he knew they would probably lose against the Nuggets even with Tim, Tony and Manu, nevermind getting injured. So, instead of getting beat with your main guys playing, let the scrubs carry the game, concede the loss if need be and let them rest. Something I was thinking he should have done during the 3rd last night.

If Pop has a crystal ball and he knew he would lose against the Nuggets with his big three in the game, then obviously he made the right choice going for the win last night and resting them tonight.

the Warriors game is different..Pop can't predict the future..that game was the 1st game of the trip..it wasn't on a back-to-back in the high altitude against a fairly tough opponent..

you guys look at standings way too much..the seeds are irrelevant..we aren't getting #1 regardless, so there's really nothing to play for in the regular season..

this move gives our guys serious rest, sends a message to the NBA schedule makers, doesn't allow teams to get confidence against us, and gives our bench players some confidence..

I wish the entire team would just walk off the court and forfeit.....it is 8 on 5 out there and has been since the opening tip. Everytime we look to start making a run, here come the whistles. We are getting hacked and beaten and no whistles. We can't get near a Denver player, especially Melo without a whistle.

We are missing 4 of our best players. We can't make an open shot to save our lives. We are careless with the basketball. So with all of this going one, we don't need the 8 on 5 affair as well.

As opposed to resting your starters when they are already rested and tanking a game against a very beatable Western Conference team? Yes.

Spursfanfromafar
02-03-2009, 10:41 PM
Glad Pop took this decision to try out the scrubs and benchers. But would still want some of the Big 3 to get a look-in the fourth to see if a win can be stolen. Gut instinct says that Pop is not going to do that though.

mystargtr34
02-03-2009, 10:42 PM
HarlemHeat37 i dont think you can call it a meaningless game. Theres a high chance the 2nd seed will come down to half a game or so - and the Nuggets will more than likely be right in the mix.

It easy to say its still months away, but what if were on the road against Denver in the second round? What if we end up with the 5th seed? Its not a stretch to assume it will be that close between the teams at seasons end.

If there was another game in 2 days then i can see the point in doing this. 5 days rest instead of 4 doesnt make that big of a difference.

And... your point is? On any given night the worst team can beat the best team. The Bobcats beat the Lakers - does that mean the Lakers are finished?

The Warriors were hot last night and it took a greater effort to beat them - but we still get one "W" and one "L" out of these two games. Negatives:

b) Ime Udoka joins the history list.

So the next time the Spurs have a back to back like that, shitty team/good team...they should do what?
Are you being deliberately obtuse? Denver is a tough place to play on your best night - this is a very unique situation.

Case in point - the Spurs had a triple OT win against the Mavs and then had to play Atlanta the next night. Pop didn't sit anyone and they managed to win the game. But playing Denver on a 2nd night of a b2b is a tough game either way. There was a very good chance we'd lose anyway - so why take a chance on one of your starters getting injured.

If this game really meant something - Pop would play the guys - they would insist on it. But I also think Pop is sending a message to the league about the crappy schedule and also to the Nuggets that he doesn't consider them enough of a threat to be concerned about losing this game.

Brilliant move by Pop to rest the 3 plus Finley. We were due for a huge letdown. Getting more minutes for Hill and even Hairston is excellent. And, Ime is showing that he still can contribute. We might even win this game with a few lucky breaks.

Denver is too undisciplined to destroy our bench. They are too mentally soft
of course it's expected that they'd not play as hard on defense, given the burden lifted off their players, but anyone but Coach Karl would have used this opportunity to light a fire under his guys to take advantage of the handicap, so that he can get an early rest for his players. Oh well.

our bench definitely are a bunch of Rudys tonight... "good effort" , blah blah... what a boring game.
