GREEN LANTERN on the fast track... and look who they want to direct...
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I grew up a Marvel kid, but I can tell you two characters I'd love to see brought out of DC's Universe and projected 50 feet high are Captain Marvel and Green Lantern.
Green Lantern is iconic and his powers lend itself to making a really fun, huge budget event picture. With both Justice League and Supes nowhere near happening it seems Warner Bros is wanting to get Green Lantern off the ground with GOLDENEYE, ZORRO and CASINO ROYALE's Martin Campbell in charge.
According to Variety, negotiations are underway with Campbell, so thing's signed, but I like their thinking in making this their new franchise.
I'd imagine they'd want to go for a Green Lantern Corps and not the magic ring of the first Green Lantern... Either way, blue oompa loompas or magic rings lead more to a giant scale fantasy epic action movie.
I think Campbell has a great eye for action, so count me excited if this moves forward. You?

I never could figure out why Sinestro continued to get his ass kicked by GL. The only limitation on GL's powers (which were immense, when you think about it) were that they didn't work on anything yellow. Sinestro had the same powers, but his ring was yellow and had no limitations. It just doesn't make sense.

Captain Marvel to me seems like they had a quota of superheros they had to meet, so they just made him up.

Captain Marvel to me seems like they had a quota of superheros they had to meet, so they just made him up.He was basically the Superman of a competing comic book company back in the 40s. DC sued and helped run them out of business, then acquired the rights to their characters. Captain Marvel was at once similar to and different enough from Superdude to make some attempts at new titles, a Saturday morning live action show, and some "Superman vs. Shazam" specials.
Is the Doom Patrol project dead? I liked that idea.

There's actually an audio book/comic called kingdom come where they use that tactic.

You left out that Captain Marvel actually outsold Superman and was the most popular at one point during the 40's...
More importantly, Captain Marvel Jr, was Elvis' favorite superhero and his hair was the inspiration for Presley's hairstyle.
In fact the influence of Captain Marvel Jr. and the other elements of the Marvel family upon on Elvis' eventual larger than life persona cannot be overstated...
Whether it's Elvis' personal TCB(Taking Care of Business) logo being modeled after the Shazam lightning bolt..

Or his costume(Superhero and otherwise) and those of the entire Marvel family directly influencing the style of Elvis' 70's Uniforms...

The impact Captain Marvel(and family) had on Elvis is unquestionable...and when you consider the impact Elvis himself had on the 20th century Pop Culture...
The conclusion is inescapable...
The most pivotal figure of the 20th century is:

By the way...Captain Marvel has an exponentially greater wish fufillment value than Supes...
Does any kid really dream about being rocketed from a doomed planet and being an alien who is infinitely superior to everyone else?
Being 10 years old and being able to transform into an adult and be able to fly, lift mountains or kick anyone's ass just by saying a magic word OTOH, there's really no comparison there....

I remember the motor home and some council of animated 'gods' sitting around telling Billy what to do.
Then they took the 'special effects' from that show and came up with live action Isis.

He's different in the Marvel universe, that Capt. Marvel doesn't use "SHazaam"
Also Capt. Marvel the character was genius, who at one time or another as a kid didn't want to
a)become an adult overnight
b)have superpowers.

But then again, most DC characters give me that feeling.I liked him best when he and Green Arrow played up the law and order hardass/hippie bleeding heart dichotomy. Without Arrow, Lantern lacks dimension unless you get multiple folks wearing the ring. IIRC Hal Jordan isn't the kind of guy that would go "Whoo-hoo!" when trying out his powers for the first time -- and a super-powered superhero movie simply can't be made without that douchey cliche.

Not exactly. He got cancer from a villain named Nitro, who, several years later (at the time) also set off the explosion that touched off Civil War. Nitro's power was to explode, assume a gaseous form, and then reconstitute.

I shouldn't say lame since I never read DC comics. DC characters just never appealed to me. I think it is because their posterboy is Superman who is too perfect of a hero :lol.
I think Reynolds will do a good job, but he was made for the sarcastic wise-ass like Deadpool persona. I have no idea if that is what the Green Lantern character is like as well.

I've never really been a fan of Hal Jordan outside of Emerald Dawn, JLA-Year One, Emerald Knights, and a select few 90s GL issues(there was one particularly cool issue where he and fellow GL Guy Gardner had a grudge match with the stipulation that the loser had to forfeit their power ring). I grew up reading Kyle Rayner as Green Lantern so I might be biased when it comes to this. In any case, a GL movie has the potential to be very cool seeing as there's so much to like about his origin and powers.
Check out the animated Green Lantern film that came out last year called Green Lantern: First Flight. It should give you a basic idea about the character.

From what I remember, Hal Jordan was probably the most serious of the superheroes back in the day that wasn't an alien or a robot. He needed to be teamed up with the wisecracking beatnik pinko Green Arrow in the 70s to lighten things up. This looks more like a Marvel movie version of GL.
I wonder what he'll be doing as he yells "Woo-hoo!" when first using his powers.
