Ohhhhh snap!

Congratulations! It's about damn time.

I hope that it's all you imagined and more.

One thing I always notice when I'm AT the game is that I miss the instant replays, commentary, and nifty graphics. :lol But nothing beats being at the game.

Hopefully Pop doesn't sit Tim out to rest for Dallas 2 nights later. That would suck. I don't see it happening though, so you should be good. :toast

I don't know where I'm sitting yet, and I'm waiting to hear whether I'll have a shot at an autograph.

That's great news, duncan228! I hope Timmy has a career high in points and puts up a triple-double to boot.

And good for all of the rest of you who get to see the Spurs on the road. I've been to 7 Spurs' road games since 2003 and still have yet to see them win -- anywhere. While I continue to serve my ban on attending road games, I hope that each of you can bring them the good luck that I couldn't.

Oh, and Mikey -- damn, you'll get to see Rasheed Wallace's first game in a Spurs uniform. :lol

I'm happy for you. It's awesome watching them in person. They are skinnier in real life and Timmy is very light skinned. It's hard to tell the difference between tony, ime, and george on the court. Timmy makes the game look so easy. You have to look at the scoreboard to realize his stats. Have a great time. I missed getting a Timmy autograph by 3 minutes. I got a Manu one though. It was great. Manu is much better looking close up and in person. Another lady and I were left fanning ourselves. :lol I hope the Spurs win big that day. Enjoy. :flag:

You are going to LOVE it and become HOOKED!! I go to every game the Spurs play at the Staples center. When they play the Lakers it sucks cause people say SO much crap about Duncan and tell me to go home ( Cause I LOVE Duncan and always wear my jersey !) Now the Clipper fans are WAY more laid back and and don't say crap!! I was luck enough to get awsome seats for every game and was able to sit behind the Spurs bench. I was able to get Duncan and Bonner's autograph and a picture with Manu! These guys DO NOT turn there backs on there fans especially Manu. He went up the bleachers to give a Spurs fan an autograph and take a picture! These guys are AWSOME!!! You are going to have SO MUCH fun!!! I think I will just have to take you along with me next time and leave my husband at home!!! LOL LOL Have your camera ready and don't forget a marker for autographs you will need it!!! I am ready for another victory against the Clippers!!!

"man" is the most frequently used word for some people, no matter whether it's a man or woman they talk to.

if you can't make sure the gender of the people you're talking to, it's a smart decision to call him (or her) "man".

when you are sure you're talking to a kid who is decades younger than you, then you can also call him or her "son", despite the gender of the kid. But it's not a good manners to say "son" or "sons" to your contemporary men and women or those who are elder than you, unless you are BRHornet45. :lol

I was given a gift tonight. And it turned out to be more than great seats to see the Spurs.

My tickets were at will call, according to the Staples Center info you can't pick up will call until 2 hours before the event time. I was there early, and it turns out I could get the tickets just after 5.

But the doors don't open until 6:15.

I was approached as I was leaving the box office by a nice man who simply said, "Do you want to get in early? Follow me, I'll get you in." I followed him. And I got in.

5:15. Top level of Staples. I ducked into a tunnel just to check out the court before I found my seat.

Duncan. On the court. Running through his game, just a few on the floor with him. Chip, Will, Udoka on the side. Mason Jr.

I was able to walk down to the first row, sit in the seat against the basket, and watch Duncan work for 30 minutes.

A few others came out, Bowen, Oberto, Thomas.

When Duncan finished and sat on the bench I moved to a seat against the tunnel. Oberto came by, signed my Go Spurs Go Banner for me.

And then Duncan came by. And signed the banner and my jersey.

I got Sean on the banner too.

The seats were great, the crowd was great, the game was great. It was wonderful to finally see my team live.

But that 30 minutes was by far the most incredible thing that's ever happened to me.

I've got several hundred pics, and some video, to sort through. I'll put them up as soon as I can.

Wow

Great for you.

228, did you get to exchange any words with him?

I managed to say "Thank you so much" when he signed the jersey. He didn't say anything, a nod and slight smile. He wasn't thrilled with his work, his shot wasn't falling the way he wanted it to. He messed around with Bowen when he came out, pushed him into the bench. They were smiling and laughing then, but he seemed a little cranky when he sat down when he finished. He left the court not long after, that's when he signed. There wasn't anyone else around besides me and one other woman that was a Staples employee. He signed for her, then me, and he was gone.

I can see the cranky in the pic, and I was really surprised that he signed. We all know he doesn't sign too much and he prefers to sign for kids. He seemed to hesitate before he came over to me, I expected him to wave it off. I'm thrilled he didn't.

He came out for the game in a different mood. He was light, smiling, messing around with the team, put up a few circus shots. And he played great. (At least in my mind).

Tim Duncan is a sweet heart. I got his autograph back in March 2003 and he is a really humble dude. Then he owned Antoine Walker and the Spurs had their way with the Celts that Sunday evening. It is an honor you got to watch greatness. Cherish that moment.

You guys are the best.

The game was great, being able to share it with SpursTalk makes it even sweeter.

Thanks for all the kind words, it feels like ST was with me.

Watching Duncan work alone was so incredible. I hope to see the team again, but I know that was a one time gift.

I promise a ton of pics as soon as I can, here's one to start.

Congrats '228, getting to see S.A. play live is an amazing experience that I've had the honor of enjoying twice here in D.C. I'm usually lurking and enjoy reading the articles you post and the love you express for Tim and the Spurs through them. I think that you getting in early and Timmy signing an item for you are your deserved cherry on top. Please, post a picture of the autographed item, frame it and cherise it forever. :toast:toast

Side-note: Your experience definitely makes me anxious for next season, when I'll certainly be heading to the game against the Wiz.

What did you say to Timmy or could you talk at all? :)

angel_luv
03-03-2009, 08:38 PM

:lol N/M my question.
Again- so happy for you! :)

Well, I'm sure most of us think of Tim as this stoic and mild-mannered player. This has almost always been people's criticism of him, that he's a "robot." I think my opinion of him was shattered in that sense a few years ago.

It was about two years ago, I was working over at FedEx Field where the 'Skins play (nothing glamorous, foodservice) and we had this new guy working administration. He was a recent graduate of G.W., funny enough he knew and was friends with Pops, and wanted to break into sports (basketball scouting or coaching). Anyway, we'd constantly talk hoops, life and various other subjects.

One day, the conversation moved to who did I root for in the NBA. I, of course, proudly said San Antonio but expected the usual "their boring'' or "I hate Tim Duncan," but was a little suprised to hear the opposite. He claimed to somehow "know people" from the Spurs P.R. department. Apparently, the P.R. person had told him that Duncan was an extremely passionate player. That during the Mavs-Spurs '06 series, Duncan had angry outbursts about the team's performances and eventual playoff series loss behind closed doors. That he took the series loss possibly harder than anyone else on the team.

True or Untrue?

I think anyone who's observed him long enough knows he's much more passionate than he appears. I don't know if this story is true, but I can certainly see it being so without having my image of him "shattered". He is the team captain and he shoulders all the responsibility for what happens on the court, good or bad.

Duncan is an extremely passionate player, you only have to pay attention to see it.

As far as the Mavs series, Duncan said he took that loss hard. He also said it was one of the best series he'd ever played in.

As far as the "angry outbursts", only someone who was there could confirm it. I wouldn't be surprised, but I would expect any outburts to still be respectful. Duncan's just not nasty.

Duncan has yelled at teammates plenty of times during games. Most recently, we've seen him blast out Bonner. It's Duncan's team and he will, and does, let people know when they mess up.

Duncan is a competitior, he's playing to win. He's emotional, he's passionate, and he's an incredible leader. Nothing you heard surprises me.

I completely agree with you about Tim's competitive nature, leadership and will to win. But, the way he told it sounded like Timmy was on a near Sheed or Garnett-level "rage." The guy claimed Timmy may have thrown objects and gone off (I'm sure at no one in particular).

Side-note: I love when Timmy gets in guys' faces and demandes their best. The sign of a true great one, IMHO.

Maybe he did go off. He needed two bags of fluid after game 7, I'm sure that was just the tip of what the series took out of him physically and emotionally. They were the defending Champions, trying to repeat, and he played the season with Planter Fasciitis. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he lost it here or there.

Throwing things? I don't know. But whatever did, or didn't, happen, it stays in the locker room. That's one of the things I admire about this team, they keep any possible dirt behind closed doors. We don't need to know any of it, we need to see the chemistry they project on the floor.

You're right, '228. But, it's interesting to hear about the parts of Timmy (the athlete) we don't get to see. It has helped me notice how vocal he's become, and how he's evolved into the true leader of the team on-court. A part of his game that is severly underrated, IMO.

I take the same type of camera Chump took to the Toros game to the Spurs games all of the time and they're cool with it. I've had it checked a couple of times at the doors, but it's within the arena's 3" lens and non-detachable rules. Gets awesome shots from all over the arena.

And I agree with every word you said, it is amazing to see your team live for the first time in person, I have been to more than a handful of games since 2002, but most recently I took my girlfriend to her first real Spurs game against New Jersey in January and she loved it. If only I was so lucky to get Timmy's autograph! Damn it! lol.
