Repeat after me: Ukic is not a stiff.
Well, he's not 4th or 3rd, he's their backup (AP shifted across from the 2 to start), and he was only drafted last year (in other words, how could he be anywhere else?), so actually, no.
Yup, Ukic IS NOT a stiff.
All season I've been explaining to the cliff-jumping wankers around here (you know who you are) that we are a second half team against lesser opposition, that we'd spark in the second half, turn up the intensity and win the game. Just about every time I've been right (the exception would be Milwaukee, but they are an exception in and of themselves - they have our number somehow?!).
However, today is a danger game and I won't make the same claim I usually do. We look tired, it's the last game before the break (often a mental letdown game), and we can't do a thing right by the refs, so I see us as a 50-50 proposition to win this when usually in a game like this I'd be saying we are a lock.
It all depends on whether TP has the legs to keep penetrating, and what pop can coax out of the bench.
Fingers crossed.
Picked it yet again.

He could have played that 3 tighter. The basket in the lane was contested pretty well, Ukic just made a tough shot over a smaller Parker; Duncan was also late coming to help. In fairness to TP, his jumper did hit the front of the ring.
last play was too complicated. should have been just give the ball to mason or finley off a screen and let them shoot it. ginobili and parker would run interference and mason or finley should have gotten a decent look off a duncan screen. too much passing occurred and players didn't get good looks.
I'll say it again, Tony does not need to shoot the ball at clutch time a lay up yes but nothing else.........Period!

Give the Raptors credit...they made shots down the stretch and the Spurs didn't.
It happens!
I will take a 36-16 record going into the All Star Game after starting 2-5.
The Spurs will be alright!!
:flag:True!!!!:toast
I'm OK with this loss, the game should've never been that close, give the Raptors credit, they deserved this win... but c'mon, you can't get burned like that by Ukic, or whatever his name is... That's pathetic defense. Awful.

You guys are way over-analysing this.
We played tired, and then used up all our energy in the 3rd.
In the 4th, Bargnani, and a youngster with some ability named ukic decided to put it to us.
It happens. However, there is no great significance to it. Occasionally good teams lose nail-biters to bad teams, especially when they are tired and out of sync. Get over it.
Game over, move on.
I`m pissed, that we lost, due to carreer-high from such crap player...

Good to see someone agrees. This game makes me think Bonner is fools gold. if he can be this bad against on the worst teams he will get a lot more attention in the playoffs. I do not want to risk that being put to the test.
Bad games will happen by everybody....even Matt Bonner.
I believe his confidence in shooting will be alright.
It was one of those games....where the Big 3 scored most of the points and the role players didn't have it tonight and it took an almost perfect game from Toronto to win on their home floor.

With the game on the line I only want Mason and Manu taking shots to win the game then Finley 3rd if he has an open look, Tim 4th and Tony 5th. If Tony is open move him up a spot or two.
in that case pop called the play for fin who chocked and sent the pineaple to TP for a "up to you man"

Its something to be off, but when Bonner is off, he is really really off, a complete non show. Thats the fucked up part. He forced the the first two shots, and after that it was lights out.

Oh no, you're right. Fortunately. But let's not overlook the fact they barely won a lot of those games after playing like shit. How many could have easily been losses? I'm just tired of seeing them repeatedly play like shit against all the crappy teams. It's one of those god damned Spurs eccentricities I could do without. But hey, if they keep winning who gives a shit, right? Not tonight, though, huh?
No, no, no.
As I've explained a thousand times, our team this year is playing like a veteran team - they virtually ignore the first half of games against lesser teams, just doing enough to lead slightly or keep the deficit from getting to double digits (what you call "playing like shit" when actually it's just saving their energy).
Then, some time in the second half (sometimes straight out of the gate, sometimes mid-3rd, sometimes end-of-3rd, sometimes mid-4th), they ratchet up the intensity, get some stops, make some easy baskets and hold on to win the game. That has been the formula against lesser teams all year. That is the way this team plays. Like it or not, that's what they've been doing and will continue to do.
By contrast, against good teams they tend to play hard for all 48 minutes.
Remember, most of these guys are getting old, and are probably bored by much of the first 2/3s of the season. Let's face it, 82 games is a ridiculous grind (it should by 58 - play each team twice), and it is impossible to keep up the intensity the whole time. The NBA regular season is a marathon, not a sprint, and our guys are old enough and wise enough to treat it as such.

Guy can play, and the fact that you are ignorant of that does not change his ability, it merely displays your idiocy and ignorance.

Bad loss against a team the Spurs would be 19 times out of 20 but in an 82 game season, you are going to lay eggs like this. At least the Spurs stayed healthy.
Plus, this gives something for Pop to nag about over the break so that there's no complacency. It's also a reminder that they are far from in playoff form. This loooooong plane ride home is going to be a good reality check. It's still January, the defense still isn't good enough and they can't rest on what they've accomplished recently. The Spurs still have a long ways to go before they are a championship quality team.

poor effort tonight..
you know you're going to lose when Roko makes 2 3's though..he has solid penetration ability, but he's a 19% 3-point shooter..so for those that question Parker letting him shoot the 3, don't..it was a good decision..
also, very uncharacteristic ending for us, basically described the effort in the game..we're the best clutch team in the NBA, but that's the shot we get off to end it? LOL sad..
losses like this happen, but it was a poor effort..

I don't usually blame Pop for losses, but I think this one is on him. I watched every second of the game. I was screaming the entire time to get Finley out of the game. Whoever he was guarding suddenly got hot. Barginari (sp.) wasn't doing anything until Pop moved Finley on him. Then all of a sudden, he was jacking up 3's. Then George came in and the other urik whatever the scrub's name was he started shooting like jordan. :lol Pop should have played Thomas more. I don't understand why Finley was in at the end. He didn't do anything to help the team tonight. This one is on POP.
Manu was FANTASTIC. I wish that they inbounded to him.
Why was Tony inbounding the ball instead of Timmay??
This one is on POP. I also didn't like all the crazy lineups in the first half. You know the ones that initially got the hot shooting started.
Why won't George Hill drive the ball and be aggressive? :frying:
OK I'm finished venting now. :whine:soapbox:

Pop had something to do with the loss aswell so he can't chew them out too bad (not putting a longer body on Roko in the final minute).

Does the team need a trade Timvp? That is the question IMO.I don't think they should be desperate for a trade because this team playing at near 100% of their capabilities can win a championship.
But, with teams desperate to get rid of salaries for both economic reasons and to open space for 2010, the Spurs should definitely be a buyer in this market.

Yup, my thinking too. if we can rip away a decent defensive big from another team without giving up too much, do it, otherwise I'm not against going into the trenches with these guys.

I just don't think trading for Joe Smith or Chris Wilcox improves the team.

As if Toronto was not tired. They played last night, as well, and even at an hour later than the Spurs did, and they were missing arguably their 2 best players.

“We shouldn’t have lost this one,” Ginobili said. “It’s important to go into the break feeling good about yourself and on a good stretch. We were playing a team that isn’t doing so well and has two injured players, so we should have done much better.”

"We didn't look past it at all," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "We are not built like that and our guys don't do that. The Raptors won the game, not because we were down or came off of Boston or anything else.
"We busted our asses tonight and down the stretch they hit about two or three [three-pointers.]
"They earned the victory so it has nothing to do with us not being ready. Give them credit."
